The Celtics Just SIGNED Two New Players! | You Got Boston w/ Noa Dalzell

Celtics reporter Noa Dalzell recaps the team’s two latest 10-Day contract signings: Dalano Banton and John Tonje. In Banton, the Celtics reunite with an old friend who can serve as an emergency ball-handler and is familiar with the Celtics organization and system. In Tonje, the Celtics get a bucket-getter who was recently acquired in the trade that sent Chris Boucher to the Jazz. Plus, how the Celtics can stay below the luxury tax.

  2. Welcome back, Snoopy. It was fun seeing him ball out in Portland. Hopefully he gets some playing time on this 10-day.

  3. Being below the luxury tax is irrelevant to Brad Stevens and Bill Chisholm.
    * The business organization loses more money in reduced revenue than it saves in tax payments if fans get the sense that the organization will sacrifice team quality for a few million dollars.
    * The asset valuation is more important to Chisholm than annual profit/loss amounts, and neither matters right now.
    * The Celtics revenue is more than $400M, to put the roster salary and tax amounts in context.

It seems that the goal is to be able to acquire more players in the off-season. Tonje and Banton are players who can be paid as 'filler' pieces. Minot, Tillman, and Boucher have earned a different level of treatment.

The Celtics ARE going to be a luxury tax team for the next decade, or as long as both Tatum and Brown are on the team. That's what happens when a team decides to sign two supermax contracts in back-to-back years.

The main thing Stevens cared about was getting below the second apron, because that significantly restricted his team construction options. A secondary consideration is the first apron, which the team will likely go above during the summer. It has team construction constraints, but they can be managed.

Please replace the term "luxury tax" with "roster flexibility". That is what all these moves, with the exception of the Simons-Vučević trade, have been about.
