The Celtics weren't going to make him a legitimate offer for anything above the bare minimum, which is a shame because he brings more value to the Celtics through his experience with the organization than he does to any other team.
Some of the media banter, speculation, and 'hot takes' were so disappointing today.
Would love to see Al back. That said, none of this is about loyalty. It's the entertainment business. Players and teams are expected to live up to the contracts they signed. Loyalty has nothing to do with it.
It's always about the money
Al might have not been happy with contract he was offered and direction the Celtics were going? Al made his decision to sign with GS. Good for him, but the Celtics hand bigger things to play for than GS.
People forget how much Al sacrificed when he was here. He became a league leading 3P shooter when asked to. Why are people complaining if Al wants to go get some money? He was so underrated in his contributions here and never demanded the ball. He found ways to be productive without the ball and showed younger players how to do the same. He lead by example and never complained. He was crucial to our Championship run. CRUCIAL. WTF more do you want?!
And stop knocking Porzingis on his availability. He has a serious heart condition and he is trying to play through when possible. He also was crucial to our Championship run. He should be in the League even if he only can play 30 games a year. He DOMINATES. He is not out of the League unless HE chooses to. 🍀🍀🍀

Big Al has been one of my favorites of the modern day Celtics. Tough-minded. Always made the right play.Sooo made games he'd make a key pass or shot and make a big impact though his numbers didn't always reflect that

He sold out again and it didn’t work out again. He got his money from another bad move from a GM. Don’t want average Al back. He’s overpaid, overrated, can’t play b2b and still thinks he’s worth more than the vet minimum.
Why when athelics want to get paid what they feel they can get.everyone wants to earn more money .the teams can trade players for money reasons also.

nah, if I was the Boston owner I wouldn't let Horford retire as a Celtic. The time when Boston needed a front court veteran because Porzingis and Kornet gone due to salary dumping Horford could have stayed and be an influence for Queta, Garza and Williams but no he opt to walk away because he didn't have faith with the organization and his team mates so no for me he doesn't deserve his number hanging on the rafters.
Are people really mad at Al for leaving? He helped us win a title. Celtics weren’t willing to pay him and another team was so he went with the money. No shame in that.
do us all a favor and don’t find out the real reason… Don’t give us an update… Love Al respect Al appreciate everything he brought to us since he first came to this franchise… But he left twice I’ll be at there were clear reasons both times why it was advantageous for him to leave but again the Pat pattern exist. He left us twice he benefited from it. It was the wrong decision, basketball wise, both times and now he’s clearly on the back line of his career if not even worse than that so respectfully, I’m done let’s move on no animosity still love Al, but I don’t need to be talking about you at this point in the season where the Celtics are on this run right now that nobody expected them to be on. It’s time to lock in and focus on the guys that are here.
If it was about the money, Horford is a fool. He has already made nearly 300 million during his career and retiring as a Boston sports legend is a guaranteed income stream for life. If it was about competing for a championship, Horford is a fool. While some may have doubted the ability of the Celtics to compete this season (I did not), Horford should have known better. Not only was he aware of the competitive culture in Boston and the weakness of the eastern conference, how could he not notice that Golden State's roster is filled with geriatrics? Old teams don't do shit in the NBA, especially in a western conference with young up and coming teams like the Thunder, the Rockets and the Spurs. Horford is a fool. He coulda gone out a Boston legend, instead he goes out a punk. Good riddance.
12M for two years when the Celtics were looking for more production from a younger developmental player was at least (some) of the money they needed to free up to "make a deal".
Al will play for whoever pays him the most. He's way overpaid this year and he is old.
You make a very good point about team loyalty to players being non existent!!! These are business decisions, from both sides!!! They got rid of PP and KG!!! But that set them up for JB and JT!!!

Al moved on for a better contract. He picked a very old team that predictably has fallen short. No need to bring Al back next year, that ship has sailed.

I'm all for out coming back to retire at Celtic. But that's more of a one-day contract type of thing. Let's move on the Big Al erra. is over. Al has been on a sharp decline since the championship year.
