TOO Early TOO Soon Expansion Draft!?

TOO Early TOO Soon Expansion Draft!?

The NBA may be expanding (Seattle and Las Vegas) and we could see an expansion draft in 2028 . If two new teams enter the league, who should the San Antonio Spurs protect!? Here’s my take!

  1. Imho exposing Fox in the expansion draft isn’t a wild take at all. I do think he is pretty overpaid for his role, yes we know what he can do in clutch moments, but if that’s his primary focus then 55M/yr is simply too much. If the next two playoffs (including the upcoming 2026 playoffs) he can’t step up for the team when they needed him the most, it’ll be the time for Brian Wright to either trade him to dump the contract or choose not to protect him in 2028.
And let’s not forget the potential growth we can get from our two guards especially Harper, that starting PG spot could very well be his sooner than later!!

  2. really hope spurs can pick up a real pg, someone like trey jones because i don’t see harper or castle running the point…castle too many turnovers and harper doesn’t seem to know how to play make and makes. a better 6 man

  3. No disrespect my men but can we get to conference finals and God willing finals!!! Lets not talk about this right now , we are in the play offs since like what? Almost a decade? This topic is off my men , lets just talk how we can finish denver on the 2nd round shall we

  4. This makes me feel like the team we have now might be the best we can get. Cap space will pull us apart somewhat going forward.

  5. Totally agree. I would not protect Fox and I doubt anyone will pick him up at that price. Why would an expansion team pick up Fox? His contract only makes sense if you think you have a competitive team.

  6. I like fox, I don't like his contract. Expansion draft could be our saving grace to dump his contract. Hopefully he has a ring by then, ideally we could trade him for value instead of losing him for nothing. But I don't want to trade him and a pick bc of his contract

  7. Id rather try to get something for Fox than just give him for free in the expansion draft. You really think we cannot game some frp for Fox in his prime? That'd be insane

  8. I love fox, he seems like a great guy. I hope he wins a ring in SA but I also hope he doesn't finish his contract in SA

  9. Do you think the league will allow the two new teams to exceed the salary cap, at least in the first year(s), because most teams will leave good but overpaid players exposed?

  10. You are not crazy. I also would not protect Fox. Specifically because of the contract as well as expecting Harper to take over his spot in the starting line up by 2028.

  11. We need to trade Fox beforehand. Get picks and a random who we can leave available. That way we get something for him.

  12. The expansion draft will occur in two years from now and in NBA, two years are an eternity. So many moves can happen…

These playoffs will surely tell us on which players the management should build the future of the Spurs on. Some players could be unexpectedly traded this summer or next summer.

But if Fox is still in the team, because he is on a max contract, this could be a good option to choose not to protect him; because the two new teams will have a limited cap, there are few chances that they would select Fox to build their franchise on.

Anyway the expansion draft won't be a good move for teams such as OKC or Spurs because the choices will be very difficult (impossible to protect all interesting players).
This summer, the Spurs will draft new rookies and could also be active at the free agency to bring in a PF with their NonTaxPayer MidLevel Exception (16M$). These new adds could become players that the Spurs won't be able to protect (despite being valuable).

  13. IF IT WERE THIS YEAR , I'd agree 100%. But, by the Summer of 2028, either Fox has earned that salary in playoff performance and the roster has already been shuffled to fit (so no real choice but to protect him), or he hasn't proven his worth, therefore leaving him unprotected won't matter (no one will touch that contract). Either way, his 'end as a Spur won't be via expansion. Still, a fun thought-experiment. 🙂

  14. leave fox open. his contract is too big and expansion teams get some screwy limited cap % in the first two years. probably wont be picking him, and if they do meh.. his contract is way too big.

  15. I would protect our key 8 rotation guys (Wemby, Castle, Harper, Bryant, KJ, Vassell, Champagnie, and Kornet) leaving Fox, Jones-Garcia, Ingram, our 4 2026 draft picks, and our 2027 draft picks, unprotected.

We have to assume we will lose one player either Fox or one of our new draft picks. If we lose Fox we still have Castle and Harper so we should be okay.
