Atlanta Hawks vs New York Knicks Playoffs Preview & Predictions

Cyro Asseo breaks down the 2026 NBA Eastern Conference first-round series between the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks.

This is not a play-in game. It is a true 3-vs-6 playoff matchup, and while New York enters with the stronger résumé, Atlanta has enough pace, playmaking, and wing depth to make this a dangerous series.

Cyro explains why the Knicks hold the edge after finishing 53-29 with a +6.5 net rating, a top-three offense, and a top-10 defense. Jalen Brunson gives New York the best closer in the series, Karl-Anthony Towns creates major matchup problems from the center spot, and the wing trio of OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart gives the Knicks a reliable two-way foundation. New York also brings more rebounding, stronger half-court execution, and a better overall playoff formula into the matchup.

On the other side, Atlanta is far from a typical 6-seed. The Hawks finished 46-36, played at one of the fastest paces in the league, and led the NBA in assists. Jalen Johnson emerged as the team’s do-it-all engine with a breakout season, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu, and CJ McCollum give Atlanta multiple ways to pressure New York. The Hawks’ movement, shooting depth, and lineup versatility could create real problems if they speed the series up.

Cyro also dives into the biggest swing points in the matchup, including Brunson vs Atlanta’s perimeter defense, how New York handles Jalen Johnson’s all-around game, the Towns-Okongwu frontcourt battle, and which team controls the pace. He also looks at the injury context, x-factors, and projected 10-man rotations for both teams.
