Will Devin Booker & Jalen Green CARRY Phoenix Suns To SHOCKING Success?

The NBA is a star-driven league, and the Phoenix Suns’ star power begins with Devin Booker. Booker, of course, doesn’t do it alone, as he has continued to build a rapport with a newer group of teammates to help the Suns find team success.

Last season, fans were robbed of seeing a large sample size of Booker’s pairing with Jalen Green, the 24-year-old dynamo who has the potential to allow this team to reach another level of success in the West. With that in mind, are they Phoenix’s best duo? Today, PHNX Suns is bringing the tier list back out as it ranks a number of Booker-based duos in addition to a few others.

Which pairings are the best? Most impressive? Have the most room — or potential — for improvement? Join Erik, Gil and Stephen as they talk through it with the Freckled Mamba. Follow the show: @PHNX_Suns, @ErikRuby, @GilMcGregor_, @StephenPG3 and @FreckledMamba!

  1. If the Suns are expecting to keep Booker happy this season they need to explore trading Green — and possibly Bridges– for a starting caliber point guard. The Suns defense and pace of play dropped off big time when Green returned and started from Feb into March. Offensively they became stagnant and predictable with Green routinely shooting them out of basketball games. The Suns have one of the best midrange players in the game in Booker and they are doing him a disservice parking him at the top of the key fielding doubles in the high pick and roll. Booker isn't athletic enough to split the doubles and attack the paint. It's time for the Suns to get Booker back to his natural position and try and find a point guard to run some actual sets in the half court again. Ott's plan of spamming the three ball isn't going to help Booker maximize his efficiency. With Royce and Grayson traded, it's high time for Ott to overhaul his gameplan.

I would call the Spurs and offer Green and Bridges for: Fox and Kornet. Fox doesn't have the best contract situation and disappointed in the Finals for the Spurs, but the Suns need to make an attempt to replicate what worked so well in 2021 again. Maluach could become a breakout player for the Suns (much like Ayton was during the finals run) with a lead guard getting him the basketball on a consistent basis. I genuinely feel if the Suns don't put a legitimate point guard next to Booker and this team struggles into the all-star break Booker will ask for a trade. He won't be happy having to sacrifice his game (and scoring ability) once again for three other inefficient iso scorers who haven't demonstrated they can play any other way.

And lastly, the Oso glazing is getting a little nonsensical in the chat. I don't know who this FreckledMamba guy is, but it seems like someone from PHNX (or the Suns brass) is instructing this dude to go in the chat and spam some narrative that Oso is greatest thing since sliced bread when it's obvious he struggles mightily versus more physical bigs and has shown to be a major liability with his timid play around the basket. That wimpy flip shot has to go. It's cool if you think Oso has potential but let's pump the brakes on glazing this dude every other podcast. Unless Oso bulks up and gains some weight, he would be better utilized as a 4 off the bench where he can make entry passes from the free throw line area. Suns badly need rim protection and fastbreak opportunities and in flashes this team looked way better when Maluach and Fleming were getting the lion's share of the minutes. This coach needs to let Maluach and Fleming work through their growing pains because its obvious they are the teams best defenders and can hold their own on the glass. If Oso is going to earn the starting spot, he needs to get in the gym and work on some semblance of an offensive game (a mid range jumper would be a nice start) and getting his free throw percentage up to par. As SPG would say making free throws is a "non-negotiable" for Oso to getting the minutes. You've got Steve Nash in the building, get it figured out.
