The Grizzlies picked up a 2nd round pick and a 2nd round pick swap from the New Pelicans in exchange for taking on the contracts of Jordan Hawkins and Micah Peavy. To match the salary, the Grizzlies included Taj Gibson and AJ Johnson, two players who were unlikely to make their opening night roster.

This move clears the way for the Pelicans to complete their signing of Bennedict Mathurin, and provides the Grizzlies some draft capital for taking on money. It also possibly further compounds the Grizzlies roster crunch ahead of training camp and a final cutdown to 15 guaranteed deals.

On this episode, Keith reacts to the trade, explains the details and looks at the updated depth chart and the seven players currently fighting for three roster spots.

  1. Hendricks makes the most of those vulnerable guys, and also seems to have the best possibility of actually contributing. O-max is a helpful end of bench guy. I did not see much from Clayton.

  2. Pelicans fan here 👋 I wish Jordan Hawkins could’ve been a rotational player, but he wasn’t good for us. He’s a shooter that can’t shoot, can’t dribble, and is terrible on defense.

Wish we could’ve kept Micah Peavy, though. He was useless offensively in his rookie season, but a really good defender and high motor. Likes to cut and can attack the basket in small doses. He can be a rotational player if he keeps working on his offense!
