As it pertains to backup PG, there is incongruency with the Wizards front office messaging. They advocate the value of Trae Young because he can run the offense and set up other players to succeed. Yet, they don't have an experienced backup PG who can do the same. The strategy of having multiple players initiate the offense sounds great in theory, especially in limited minutes when Trae is on the bench. But, the fact is, Trae Young is an undersized NBA player with an injury history. I am disappointed that they didn't bring in someone like TJ McConnell. He is a proven backup PG, who plays with intensity and excels in hustling defense. The Wizards roster in development, needs those intangibles. TJ has started in the NBA Finals and performed well under pressure. The Pacers are loaded in the backcourt. TJ has around 3 yrs at 10m/yr on his contract. As things stand, as much as I appreciate Bub and I am confident that Will can develop into an exceptional PG as well as AJ if he can tighten up his handle, he could take over the starting PG position within a few years. I think TJ would be a perfect fit, he's at the end of his career thus best utilized in a limited capacity unless they need him to step in and start for stretch of games if Trae Young goes down with an injury. TJ would be an exceptional insurance policy, while still allowing the young core develop their playmaking skills.
