[Lewenberg] In terms of what VanVleet will be looking for on the open market, the four-year, $130 million deal that Tyler Herro got last fall is expected to be the baseline.

>Prior to the start of the season, VanVleet turned down a contract extension valued at roughly $114 million, the maximum Toronto could offer at the time, according to a source. He’s eligible to sign an extension up to that value until the end of the campaign, but considering he can make more in free agency and he literally wears the mantra “Bet on Yourself” across his chest, it’s not a surprise that he would prefer to let his current deal expire before negotiating a new one.
In terms of what VanVleet will be looking for on the open market, the four-year, $130 million deal that Tyler Herro got last fall is expected to be the baseline. Officially, the Raptors don’t have to decide whether they’re going to be the team that gives it to him until July. Essentially, though, they’ve got to make that decision over the next five weeks, ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline, or they risk losing him for nothing.
Committing that much long-term money, or more, to an undersized guard who has accumulated a ton of miles, battled injuries and will turn 29 next month isn’t a no-brainer. Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster have both spoken openly about their intention to keep VanVleet in Toronto beyond this season. Despite the team’s recent setback and the re-evaluation process its prompted among the front office, there’s no indication that their stance on VanVleet has changed.

Hope it works out for him

He think he’s him but in reality he’s just 5’11 Fred VanVleet

  2. Consistent_Reading51

With the cap space going up in 2025, 114m would be 16% so if not the Raptors, then someone will def offer him more because 28m when everyone is making 45-50m won’t seem that bad

  3. NeoDestiny-

    -5.3 rTS% this season btw

He’s actually had below league average efficiency in every single season of his career outside of 17-18 where he was exactly league average

  4. Snafudumonde

You want it to be one way but it’s the other

  5. Good_NewsEveryone

Do we believe that a career 37% 3pt shooter is suddenly a 32% shooter going forward?

  6. BabyDick-_-

Shout out to the team who wants to be 5-10th seed for the next 4 years

Paying FVV an average of $32 million is a big mistake IMO. I don’t think any team will actually offer him that; but in the meantime if that’s his ask we should trade him to that team now and get some value out of it instead of losing him for nothing.

  9. Short guard who shoots high volume with pathetically low efficiency, truly a coveted player. My condolences to whoever actually signs him.

  10. Richie_jordan

I mean goodluck to anyone offering that to an undersized guard who’s already hit his peak.

  11. Remarkable-Conflict9

He’d certainly be instant offense from the bench on a championship contender.

But there’s no justification for any team to give him the contract he’s looking for.

  12. realudonishaslem

Bro is shooting 38% from field and 32.5% from 3pt… Even for a high volume 3PT shooter that’s horrible

  13. thelostburner

tyler herro having his best season ever on better efficiency, and FVV… isn’t.

  14. Vanfleet forgot he’s supposed to relax after he gets his fat contract.

  15. ProvocativeHotTakes

Y’all really said the Knicks overpaid for Brunson when his salary scales down each season

Man just take the 114$ million deal. Betting on yourself to make an extra 15$ mil when you can very well be making 40$ million less. Risk is way to big.

  18. DwellerInIce

I think 4-year 100m is a reasonable price. He is very injury prone at this point, and he definitely needs rest.

  19. slicksonslick

Hes looked worse in both ends, that is worrysom. If he was still locking people down / really hard to get by I’d be more inclined to say this is just an odd shooting slump.

  20. aalexnotnice

Mavs should pick him up, but not for that kind of money

  21. smokinginthetub

Lmao FVV about to negotiate his way out of the league

  22. PlumCantaloupe

I think Fred bounces back, but unless the Raps change their roster/coaching strategy it feels like too many guards just shoot over him and he will always be a liability on the perimeter.

But who knows. Chemistry between 5 guys with varying goals is very difficult. Maybe the Raps pick it up at the end of the season and into the next, or a change in scenery has FVV look like a point god …

  23. Zealousideal_Ad1734

Seems like a lot for a mid guard

    Hahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaahhahahahahahahahahahahaah

    Cough cough oh man cough

    Hahahahahahhaahahahahhahahahaha

  25. HyruleFool420

Hopefully the Raptors give him what he wants!

  26. Senmonov

Right now the only teams with enough cap space to bring him in on that deal next season would be the Pistons and Rockets. So we are probably dealing with a sign and trade.

I don’t see a lot of demand from FVV. He brings a lot to the table when playing well, but he’s a small guard who has only had one season (2018) where he had league-average efficiency and has never shot above 45% of 2s with a career average of 3.3 free throw attempts per 75.

This is not the shot profile of someone who is going age well. He needs a smaller role than he currently has. It only takes one, but it’s hard to see a team that would be willing to pay him 32 million per.

HAHAHAHAHA thanks for the morning laugh

  28. If we give this dude 30 mill anyway to not just continue to get worse, but be injured heading into every post season the next 4 years, I am off the Masai/ Webster bandwagon. Their decisions since the Championship year have already been suspect, or at least mid at the very best. This would be the death blow to any respect they still have.

  29. SmoothBrein

Gather around children, it is once again time to tell you the tale of Darth Schroder.

  30. BoogeOooMove

We were all saying that the $114 million was a lot, let alone $130 million. On a championship team he’s maybe the 3rd best player? 4 yrs @ $90 million feels right to me. At best, he plays great and he’s getting paid what he’s currently making basically, at worst, with the new media deal, he’s being paid to be a half decent starter.

  31. Hes lucky to receive a 100M flat if he keeps playing like shit.

  32. mnight84

Even if you feel like Fred vanvleet is the better player the problem for him is Tyler herro was only 22 years old at the time he signed his deal and vanvleet is 28 and is about to turn 29 coming off a bad season! It’s going to be difficult for him to get Tyler herro money but all it would take is one team crazy enough to give it to him.

  33. kakabakaba

No way he’s getting that kind of money when a lot of shitheads still think that Herro doesn’t deserve his contract. I don’t think he’s washed though, just needs a new environment where he can succeed as he’s getting cooked in Toronto playing tons of minutes since Lowry left. He’ll be forced to retire early if the situation won’t change. I don’t blame him for betting on himself. I blame the organization for letting this get worse. Gabe Vincent is having a rough year but he still get to play 24 mins just to preserve old Lowry any way we can

  34. BadAtNameslmao

Dude is at best a 5th option on a championship team and he thinks he’s gonna get 130 million 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  35. xGhost94

FVV seems like the type of player that outside of Toronto has little to no interest because he isn’t flashy or a household name. If he declined $114m for hope to make ~ $15m extra, GG. Karma will come lol.

  36. Hojie_Kadenth

I think it’s funny that everyone in the league thinks they’re better than Tyler Herro and are comparing their contracts to his.

  37. At this rate if I’m the raptors I’m offering 85 for 4 years or he can walk.
