(Shams) Joe Mazzulla will return as coach, has 3 years and $14 mil left on coaching deal. Team will also look to bolster staff with vet assistants. Also mentions there would’ve been a lot more questions if team got swept.
“If he got swept, I think there would be a lot more questions… but the fact that it did go to game 7, I think it allowed the Celtics to see that there is a little bit of runway, some potential here.”@ShamsCharania on Joe Mazzulla’s future with the #Celtics#RunItBack pic.twitter.com/dSjCIGtZR1

I think it would’ve been better if they got swept and were able to talk to nurse into coming…
3 more Seasons of Joe learning on the job? Ugh, what a mess.
I don’t think this is necessarily a good thing that we are making decisions off of winning 3 extra games in a series that we were heavily favored to win?
Like, the team losing after Game 4 vs. losing last night, does that really change Mazzulla’s ability as a coach?
That being said, Brad always believed in him and I always doubted whether he would actually get fired.
Not sure how I feel about this.
Hopefully with a full offseason and full coaching staff he can improve.
I like this move. We need hard-nosed, high BBIQ former players who know how to win and vet defensive minded coaches like Vogel on the bench. The former players will demand respect from the players and the former coaches will help Joe along/help scheme
Give me Rondo and Vogel headlining the assistant hires and I think we have a really solid coaching bench
I don’t hate it.
We went from Ime with Joe and Hardy as assistants to Joe basically on an island.
Give the team an offseason to get at least one or two veteran assistants under him and I think that’ll go a long way.
That said, give him a short leash. If it’s more of the same then I’d hope either Brad or an assistant can step in. Our window’s too short to throw away another year.
I’m sure firing ~~Brad~~ ~~Udoka~~ Mazzulla will change everything
Glad the FO isn’t so reactionary
JB admitted that they were changing their identity on the fly, because the players preferred a defensive mindset to Joe’s offensive focus. That’s a major problem, and not sure it’s on that Joe can pivot from. His system is predicated on shooting a lot of shots and playing the numbers game. We need a defense first culture.
If we can get Frank Vogel as an assistant, I’m down for that tbh.
HELLO MEDIOCRITY!!!! And the cheap owners won’t help!
Can’t overcome cheap ownership
I just don’t think 4 coaches in a row is the way to go
Give him a full offseason and actual assistants that don’t leave halfway through the year
my guess is they get stephen silas for the offense and try to get nate mcmillan for the defense
but its not going to matter cause joe is not a leader and has ZERO HC intangibles
Should never have given him 3 years. Obvious this team needs an older coach that will hold players more accountable.
With Nurse going to the Sixers, guess this is the only realistic option. I’m not too mad, not many head coaches win a championship in their first year anyway. However, if the C’s don’t win banner 18 next year, he better be gone.
If we can get some good assistants around him he’ll do fine. He desperately needs to change some things next year though. The coaching mistakes are so obvious that I’m pretty hopeful things will be a lot different next year.
I wish we got swept
I honestly think what this team needs a disciplined system on both ends. The lack of ball movement, the half hearted screens and the complete reliance on 3pt led to inconsistency all season. They should get great assistants and hire a mindset guru to come in and adjust what’s already there.
I’m cool with it. I’m getting sick of every play off coach getting fired for simply losing to a better team
GREAT we’re stuck with a guy whose gameplan is “just have fun”. Smart pretty much summed up how terrible he is too.
The nice thing about having a coach whose weaknesses stem from a lack of experience is that experience is the only thing he’s guaranteed to gain over time.
First off this is why they should have waited until the end of the year, if this deal wasn’t in place already would he be coming back? I’m not sure and I personally want to go in another direction.
Also is there any way to get Ty Lue from the Clippers like the Suns were trying to do I have hella respect for that dude
3 wins in a series you still lost doesn’t and shouldn’t dismiss doubts you had from a front office/ownership about your head coach. If you didn’t believe in him down 0-3 I would really hate to think that losing 4-3 somehow makes Joe a better coach than you though. What’s the line of demarcation? 2 wins would you have still moved on? 1? Seems way too unsteady to make a drastic opinion change over 3 games.
NOOOOOOOO. FIRE THAT MFER!!!! Worst Coach in the history of worst coaches
Thats my coach. Fuck yall haters.
Maybe Joe will realize that defense is our identity and go back to being a defense first team next season. We got hit with the injury bug the worst time this year. I think we come back stronger after getting embarrassed by an 8th seeded team.
Hire Vogel?
Joe coaches very well the last 4 games and anyone who says otherwise is just wrong. He showed a lot of growth this postseason and if we give him Silas and Vogel as assistants I have full faith in him
Joe needs to be fired. This isn’t about him growing into a good coach we need the best right now. If we had a good coach we’re in the finals right now we can’t be dealing with anything less.
lets get vogel and silas in here
We are likely to lose a coach or two once Ime starts his hiring process down in Houston.
Booooooooooo
It’s kind of hard to change coaches after a playoff run this deep. Most of the best coaching candidates already have jobs. You might be able to poach an assistant that only wants to leave for the right situation. I just don’t think it’s very likely that there is a guy out there like that that you’d want to hire.
What they needed all season was a power forward who could really shoot the lights out to create spacing, that way they would have more movement on offense. Someone like Danilo Gallinari would be a real good addition. That plus some assistant coaches would be nice.
He needs to be seriously spoken too about his reluctance to make changes and resort back to bad tendencies. Wayy to many players have complained about a lack of offensive planning, and not enough defensive emphasis. That and the bonehead needs to give Rob and Grant more minutes, especially Grant during the season
Great, now give JB the supermax and let’s get ready for another 5 years of “whoops! Let go of the rope, next year for sure, they’re still young!”
