Bill Russell was a horrible person. He expected everything for free because of who he was. Over a 6 year period from 1995-2000 he never paid for anything at Riverbend Golf Course in Kent Wa. He made the cart girls cover what he took from their tips. He would threaten to tell their boss and get them fired for he knew and was friends with Jim Stone. Jim was the Director of Operations for the course and was sued and settled out of court for the money he embezzled from the City of Kent. $5 million was missing and could only nail him on just over $2million. And Bill was part of it with getting free golf clubs, clothes, balls, free rounds of golf anytime he wanted. He would bump anyone to go in front without waiting.
On Sunday’s for 1 1/2 years I had to cook his egg sandwich with cheese and Mayo on both sides and needed to have it ready for him at 5:57am and 6:57am depending on the time of year. If it wasn’t ready at that time, I would get yelled at by him and he would tell Jim and his wife who was my direct boss in the kitchen would take my tips away for the day. He never ever paid for it or ever said thank you. Half the time he never said a word or looked in my direction.
And playing a round with him because I was a single player and work friends with 1 of his golfing buddies We called Old Playa Pete, Jim Stone my boss and another regular who came with Bill for free golf was the final straw to ever giving that man any respect. I was asked a question by his friend and was just finishing up my answer about being on the golf team in high school and that’s how I met old Playa Pete and got a job from his request to Jim. Bill I guess didn’t like that I was getting asked questions and he was being left out of the conversation that he decided to hit me in the shin with his driver. He had just got done with his tee shot on hole number #7, a short par 4 (street on the left side of tee box and motel beyond the green) and hobbled back the way he did with his tall lanky bad knees walk and said “hello, it’s your shot”. I buckled as it hit right on the middle part of the bone. He just kept walking back to his cart and never said another word to me or looked at me the rest of the 11+ holes.
Old Playa Pete and Bill’s friend helped me out with making sure I was ok and apologized for him. They gave me an ice pack they created from their beer cooler and allowed me to take one of their seats on their cart. I was always a walker because of being on the golf team we had to walk, but they allowed me to use the seat and drive me to my ball while they took turns standing on the back. They showed compassion and were saying how he hates young people and that’s why he always acts this way to young people and that they only know him because of their parents wanting autographs to sell. Which he will never do as he didn’t like that they could make more money of his signature than he did in playing the game itself.
But Bill never apologized for hitting me and causing the need of the cart to get through the rest of the round. Unlike them we had to kind of pay for our rounds. Only allowed 2 rounds of golf per pay period, a few tokens for the range and free walk on anytime available at the par 3. So I wasn’t trying to waste my round, though my shin bone was numb for 3 holes.
