Kareem gets tired of Danny Schayes’ shenanigans so he jumps on his back and puts him in a headlock. He receives his 2nd technical foul and is subsequently ejected from the game (Game 2 – WCF – 1985).

The door to the Lakersâ locker room opened only five minutes after Tuesday nightâs 136-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference championship series. It wasnât to let the media enter, but rather to let Kareem Abdul-Jabbar flee the scene before anyone could ask him about the antics that led to a rare ejection.
Accompanied by a Forum usher, Abdul-Jabbar walked briskly down the tunnel leading to the nearest exit, not acknowledging a few writers who chased after him. In less than 20 seconds, Abdul-Jabbar was out the door and heading home.
So it wasnât immediately known what prompted the usually composed Abdul-Jabbar to receive two technical fouls in less than a minute during the fourth quarter. In a particularly ugly incident that directly led to his ejection, Abdul-Jabbar climbed on Danny Schayesâ back and, according to Schayes, **tried to gouge his eyes.**
**âI felt Kareem on my back and all of a sudden Iâm on the ground,â Schayes said. âHe was reaching around, scratching my face. He was trying for my eyes. He said something to me. He said, âHow does it feel to have youâre eyes gouged out?â I donât think he meant it. . . . He has earned a reputation as a very class guy.â**
Noticing the shocked look on reportersâ faces, Schayes pointed to his left eye, which was reddened and had a long scratch under it.
âRight there,â he said calmly.
Apparently, the incident that led to Abdul-Jabbarâs actions occurred a few seconds earlier, when Magic Johnson said Schayes elbowed him on the chin while fighting for a rebound. A scowling Johnson then approached Schayes, some shoving occurred, and then Abdul-Jabbar hopped on Schayesâ back.
**âHe (Schayes) elbowed me in the chin, and I went to tell him about it,â** Johnson said. **âThen, Kareem came in, and (Schayes) apparently just fell down.â**
Said Schayes: **âI donât know if I elbowed Magic. When youâre going for a rebound, a lot of elbows fly. He thinks I did elbow him.â**
A preliminary bout about 45 seconds earlier preceded Abdul-Jabbarâs piggy-back ride on Schayes. Abdul-Jabbar was trying to maintain his position in the low post, but Schayes was trying to deny it by conventional means–pushing and leaning on Abdul-Jabbarâs body.
A few angry shoves were exchanged–including Abdul-Jabbar shoving referee Wally Rooney aside–and Kareem had his first technical.
**âI really didnât expect a technical to be called on that first one,â** Schayes said. **âWe were just pushing.â**
All this took place after the Nuggets had pulled away from the Lakers in the fourth quarter and were only about six minutes away from evening the best-of-seven series at one game each.
Johnson said it wasnât the Lakersâ frustrations showing; it was simply playoff basketball getting a little out of hand.
âI thought they were just more aggressive,â Johnson said. **âAny time there is pushing and shoving through a game it builds up. As long as there were no punches thrown, itâs all right.â**
Depending on which team you asked, the reason for the altercations was either the Nuggets playing overly aggressive (i.e. dirty) or the Lakers venting their frustrations or the referees Rooney and Jake OâDonnell letting the game get out of hand.
âWe were playing,â Denver Coach Doug Moe said. âThey were the ones throwing elbows and tackling us.â
Countered Laker Coach Pat Riley: âWeâre usually pretty cool about these things. It happens in playoff games. There was a lot of pushing and shoving. But thatâs not the story tonight. The story is that the Denver Nuggets played well and won.â
Riley, not wanting to add a fine to the loss, stopped short of blaming the referees.
âIâve had my say about them (the referees) in the past,â he said. âAll it does is empty my pockets. . . . Weâre pros. Weâve got to go up to Denver and play basketball. Put the word basketball in quotes. Sometimes teams say they will stop our ability to play basketball by any means possible. We are going to play our game (in Game 3 Friday).”

Lakers talent won out though, they won the series 4-1 with this being the only loss. Their final closeout game they won 153-109.
The Lakers were up 2-1 in the series in the 4th game which was a close affair. But late in the 3rd quarter their star Alex English fractured his thumb and was done for the year.
Ironically it was while he was holding Kareem, who violently jerked himself loose from the hold, shattering English’s thumb. English had 28 points already and likely would have ended with 35+.
The Lakers went on to win by 4, and then without English the Nuggets collapsed. They played even in game 5 through one quarter, 34-34, but then the Lakers exploded for 42 in the 2nd, holding the Nuggets to 18. Up by 24 the reserves played most of the 2nd half and the Lakers continued to move away.
It was English’s only trip to the Western Conference Finals, another great player on a team not good enough to give him a chance for a ring.

The second best Nuggets team ever. Weâre close to winning that WCF if we didnât have injuries.
