20 Years of Mid In a Nutshell; So Close Yet So Far

[Applause] back of [Applause] the a very frequently the most random moment sparked video ideas for me this time it was learning Jordan Clarkson’s recent Triple double was the first regular season triple double by a member of the Jazz in 16 years funny when you consider they had rust for a split second and

What could have happened uh yeah the stat prompted me to very brief review some Utah franchise history because not only are they missing triple doubles they are missing a championship they’re missing recent long-term success hell they’re missing long-term sustained contention practically since the ’90s so stick around because without going into

Too much detail I can more or less sum up around 20 years of Jazz basketball with a few overarching themes with that being said I’d like to reiterate the word brief this is not the Pistons video where I’m going yearby year into detail not necessary here it really does feel

As if the Stockton and Malone Jazz simply disappeared after this shot vanished Into Thin Air Jordan held up six fingers and Carl Malone was on the Lakers the end no they actually played together for five whole years after this where in the regular season at least they were kind of successful for a

Stretch you hear absolutely nothing about for good reason though as the tandem essentially proceeded to lose to all the future teams and stars who were on the rise in the west this includes the early 2000s TR Blazers twice Durk and Nash’s Mavs and the Kings twice who are probably defending champions in 03

Through various alternate timelines over those 5 years as mentioned earlier the win percentage was very acceptable for tendem in their Twilight years however the reason you’ve never even considered those Jazz teams outside of Jordan erasing them is due to Stockon Malone both being about 35 years old at the

Time of their last finals appearance if a Duo today lost two straight finals in their mid headed to late 30s You’ fully expect them to be cooked in the team to seek rebuilding speaking of the finals I did want to quickly point out that outside of some very nefarious Carl

Malone story lines I believe the entire franchise’s hor luck moving forward can be traced back to this Moment Stockton Open three John Stockton sends the Utah Jazz to the NBA finals did you catch it I didn’t either for basic my entire life up until a couple of months ago on a random day this play popped up for me and I asked myself upon rewatch why was

Charles Barkley stuck running out to a John Stockton 3 well if you take a look at Malone here he’s committing the second most aggreg just act of his entire life possibly the nastiest moving screen in NBA history yeah Clyde Drexler had a few words about it afterwards yet it’s an infraction almost entirely

Erased from NBA history mostly because Jordan proceeded to erase this do over the next two postseasons sins were atoned for except they continued paying for this in my opinion rebuilding that’s what Utah did in summer 2003 as Stockton retired Carl moved on and the organization leaned into its youth

Including Andre kolinko did you realize he played with both these Duos the second of which were minted by the Jazz more or less stealing Carlos Boozer from the Cavaliers in a fairly unprecedented manner still not all the way clear on how Rob Pinko pulled this off I just

Wish it happened during the social media era regardless with Boer and kolinko in place the Jazz remained poor enough in ‘ 05 to luck into Daren Williams in nearly no time at all the successor Duo had risen reaching the Conference Finals only two seasons later here’s the thing

About the successor Duo Boozer and Williams were really good yet really mid compared to what they were up against that includes the 2007 Spurs NBA Champions 2008 Lakers two wins away from being NBA champions 2009 Lakers NBA champions and the 2010 Lakers NBA champions a cruy hilarious detail upon

Reviewing those years is noticing they won one less game against La each postseason hustling backwards so now you already understand a little over a decade of Utah Jazz basketball losing to the best or one of the best teams almost every single year of course Stars only ever possess so much patience including

Carlos Boozer who moved on to what we’re supposed to to be greener pastures with d rad in Chicago left to fin for himself for not even a full season Darren Williams did Jack predictably being moved to the Brooklyn Nets with Utah’s front office begrudgingly needing to start over again after merely four

Playoff runs this brings us to the ugliest stretch of Jazz basketball since before they drafted John Stockton basically the beginning of their history in Salt Lake City luckily the same summer Boozer split Town pick nine of the draft granted Gordon Hayward who would live up to the potential a top 10

Selection a very acceptable name to place next to the likes of Al Jefferson and Paul Milsap that specific um Trio peaked in 2012 with a playoff appearance and absolutely no other notable success which ended up being okay because in the 13 draft a future Hall of Famer would

Grace the roster near the very end of the first round Rudy goar took time to shine no doubt however it came together perfectly as once haward left through free agency in 2017 Donovan Mitchell picked up the almost immediately with a rookie of the year worthy Campaign which

Um got murky but hey look Utah’s thirdd recognizable Duo also possibly their most unfortunate debatable I don’t know it’s just actually ridiculous how consistently this issue has plagued the franchise Malone and Stockton lost to nearly all the best teams from 97 to03 Williams and Boozer practically amounted

To Kobe and Gasol’s warm-ups for three of their four postseasons then goar and Mitchell started out similarly immediately losing to Paul and Harden rockets in 18 and 19 they were young though with plenty of time and a very bright future it seemed right well the 2020 bubble happened where they brutally

Forfeited a 3-1 lead to the Future NBA champion nuggets core which provided a say scene displaying just how tired d Mitch was in only year three year four brought forth a nasty nasty nasty outing to the Clippers who lost kawh Leonard Midway through the series a point where

Rudy goar being ped on became the narrative year five showed something very similar so despite him having won three deys through five seasons an appropriate question was being posed were Mitchell and goar already at their ceilings I mean during 2020 they were lowkey dark horse contenders and in 21

Probably should have made a Conference Finals appearance given the circumstances now you’re losing to the Mavs without Luca donic I mean damn at least the other Duos were going out to goats and top 10 guys either way 2022 became the last straw of a movie the organization had seen on repeat a Duo

That simply did not have the potential and or support pieces to eventually get the job done knowing this while the prices were high once again that big red restart button gobear sent to one place Mitch in another boom in general you just received almost everything relevant

To the Utah Jazz over the past 20 Seasons being that stocked in a Malone span all the way back to the mid 80s their entire history is damn near composed of three star Duos who either came short or well short of bringing the franchise its first title it just be

Like that sometimes one day in the offseason we’ll examine what happened from the mid 80s to early 2000s cuz you simply do not see Duos Thug it out anywhere near that long these days without a title to show for in any case after hearing about Jordan Clarkson’s triple double being a record-breaking

One I was just going you know what Utah does seem to be one of those franchises and in fact they are one of those those franchises they’ve had some good players they’ve had some good times but as you see here boy you sure can sum up a lot

Of their history very very easily if you enjoyed this video be sure to hit the like button comment and subscribe while hitting the Bell next to my name if you want notifications every time a new video drops appreciate you watching and I’ll see you on the next [Applause] one [Applause]

The Utah Jazz have played host to some very recognizable duos, yet have continued to fall short, and have only really ever been close a couple of times.
After Michael Jordan seemingly ended Stockton & Malone in ’98, what happened?

  1. 2:13 you make a good case about that Malone screen being their curse, but let's be real here: they're always going to be cursed while they still call themselves the Jazz.. give it back to NOLA already, maybe the voodoo doctors will lift the curse lol

  3. I don't get why fans have to beg for a ring for a sports team. Wouldn't you rather have your team be competitive and have a chance every year? Why not ask for that? You say Toronto got what it needed, but did it? Making the playoffs only twice in the last 5 years (not looking like they could make it this year and selling). Nobody talks about them because they're bad. They're not that "pulling random guys out of their G league" team anymore. Went from developing random guys to not having anybody. Investing in that one championship not only removes all chance of being relevant, but you don't have that chance of winning a championship because you made bad trades and didn't rebuild and retool well. I don't get why fans would take 1 in every 30 years of winning in exchange for winning 10 years in a row, maybe losing at different levels in the playoffs. Shit, people are talking about the Bucks being a failure and they won 3 titles ago with an injury to their MVP candidate in last year's playoffs. I swear people just love shitting on a mic because they love the sound of their own voice.

  4. You forgot how in the years b4 Mitchell, Hayward took them to the playoffs in 16 and 17 which is pretty hard in the west and in 17 they beat the clippers and that was cp3 last game on the clippers and interestingly enough the jazzs teams led by Hayward both years lost to the warriors

  5. They r cursed bc they let K.M have a NBA career when he should have been in prison.

  6. Ever since that 98’ finals, the Bulls n Jazz have been in similar paths as franchises it feels like lol

  7. Not even a Utah fan, but I was rooting for them hard in 2022.
When they beat Dallas in game 4, I thought they were winning the series

Even post-game when Gobert said, "F* the talk," got me hyped as hell😭😭

  8. Got really hopeful during that 2020-2021 season when we were the #1 seed in the West. Absolutely sucked to exit in the 2nd round like we've always done. But we always seem to rebuild pretty well enough to be a playoff seed when we need to, that's why we went from the Stockton/Malone era to the D Will / Boozer era to the Hayward era to the D Mitchell / Gobert era. So now I'm just being patient until the front office and coaching staff can develop our next really good team and hopefully Finals contender.

  9. As a Jazz fan, the most frustrating thing is that these teams were actually good and so fun to watch. I remember prime Steph and the Warriors pulling up in Utah to get blown out by Rudy-Mitch by 30. And it happened more than once. Gordon Hayward hitting a buzzer beater against prime LeBron and the Cavs who would win the chip that year. And sometimes Stockton-Malone would dismantle MJ and the Bulls. The teams could just never do it when it mattered most. But hey, there can only be one champion. We’ll have ours one day, until then, we still continue to have our small moments.

  10. Considering the desert isn't a big market is actually impressive how Utah got all that, Phoenix went to the finals or at least fans feel they deserved it more and Denver managed to win last year

  11. The Deron Williams and Mitchell/Gobert era Jazz are both what I would call "fake contenders". Good regular seasons, maybe even a good playoff seed, but never realistically close to winning a chip. Jazz only made the WCF in '07 bc they faced an 8 seed in round 2. Mitchell/Gobert, meanwhile, after getting the no. 1 seed in 2021, blew a 2-0 lead to perhaps the most cursed franchise in NBA history w/no Kawhi. Wild. Even so, I was still foolish enough to think they'd be favorites with Luka hurt in 2022, but somehow they got themselves down 2-1 before Luka even played. Fake contenders, no way around it

  12. I was about to go off as a non Jazz fans how you can call them as mid when they were pretty decent fridge contenders in many eras, then I watched the video, and it just made sense.
