Boston Celtics get 55 from Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown to hold off Indiana Pacers

The Boston Celtics looked great then they didn’t they looked bad and then they figured things out I’ll talk about the mentality that went into this why these are the types of wins the Celtics need to be winning and hey we get to celebrate because the Celtics are the

NBA belt champions baby we’re going to talk about it all right now on the lock on Celtics podcast be ever ready recognize the city of champ Boston baby we do what you can locked on number 18 tatman Brown J team step back we going wet that and slay

Teams of course the Celtics who else could it be screaming like kg with the lario B corales above average assessing the team status best daily pod no cap salary matching clutch like bir the DJ John on replay Prime Time dapping up the truth on the sideline raining JS how we

Started raising B how we finish locked on Celtics home of the winners hey there welcome back to the lock down Celtics podcast right here on the lockdown podcast Network where it’s your team every day and I got you covered every single day with a free fresh podcast that drops directly to

Your device wherever you subscribe to podcast you can watch a show on YouTube you can see me on YouTube here on the floor I’m actually on the floor at the TD Garden right above the right break in front of the Boston Celtics bench here talking about the Boston Celtics winning

The NBA belt by the way beating the Indiana Pacers for it and how they looked great but then it kind of fell apart and then they had to figure it out we’ll talk about the rebounding the problems there we’ll talk about the mentality Joe moua’s coaching all of

That stuff the chaos that the Indiana Pacers uh bring got to give them credit for being this chaotic crazy team that makes the Celtics Jo uh uh Chris Ops porzingis after the game said they they can make you look really bad and they did make the Celtics look really bad but

Here look first of all first and foremost the Boston well first and foremost let me introduce myself if you’re new to the show I’m John corales I used to play Once Upon a Time now I’m covering the Celtics for Boston Sports Journal I’m so excited about this win

I’m so excited about the NBA Belt being back in Boston for those of you who don’t know what the NBA belt is it’s the champions from the previous season that or this you know the reigning Champs the Denver Nuggets came in with the belt and then you defend it every night like a

Heavyweight championship or a wrestling championship and it was in the Pacers hands they had got it for the third time the Celtics had it once before now they have it again so if you’re watching on the YouTube page I get to put this little belt graphic up here now that

We’ve got this is a a fun New little thing the Celtics uh beat the Pacers based on uh figuring out how to box out basically they clamped down defensively when they needed to and they they got the job done uh they came out in this first the first quarter it looked like a

Team that was ready to play the Celtics came out early and were moving the ball around they had just a ton of assists in fact they finished this game with 25 assists on 47 makes but in the first half I’m call that number up real quick

The first half they had 17 assists on 30 makes they shot 64% from the field 57% from three nine of 10 from the free throw line they had the 17 assists they’ given up at that point 11 offensive rebounds but it wasn’t it wasn’t really hurting them at that point they went

Into the half up 81- 66 81 points at the half it’s their second highest scoring output in a half uh the the the highest one was the previous time the Pacers were here uh so the Celtics have great first halves against the Pacers they they came out they were

Focused they were moving the ball Jason Tatum had an incredible second quarter Derek White had an incredible first quarter he came in just blistering hot Tatum could not miss in the second quarter the actually l Lally the only miss that he had was a two for one with

33 seconds left on the clock in the second quarter he he was that good in the second quarter the Celtics looked great they were generating great shots the end of the second quarter was a little problematic uh Tyrese halberton hit a halfcourt shot uh buzzer beater

Off the glass so it was like a little bit of a lapse and that lapse was a little bit of foreshadowing right and after the game Joe moula said I kind of knew that we were were due for some sort of Correction because again the Celtics

In the first hat shot 57% and in the the Pacers who are a great three-point shooting team shot 35% seven of 20 and Missoula said I knew that they were gonna come back and fix that so they did they they they shot a little bit better but more importantly they they just were

This chaotic uh random team as uh Drew holiday put it afterwards like we were in the in the locker room and I asked like Drew kept bringing up I like oh they played random they played random I was like what does that mean he goes

Could you call a play for them right now could you tell me what play they ran at all in the second half and the answer is no did did they run a play in the second half they they got out and ran the Celtics missed shots little bit of a

Regression to the mean they come out they run they attack they crash the boards in the Celtics in the third quarter I asked Joe Missoula about the offensive rebounds and they’d given up 19 he said you know I’d say 10 of them were our fault which leaves nine for the

Pacers to just be their chaotic selves and get in there and and and get themselves Second Chances The Celtics were crushed Second Chance points they were outscored by 25 in Second Chance points that’s a recipe for disaster and that disaster came in the third quarter where the Celtics lost their entire lead

The entire 20-point lead erased in the third quarter but uh they they were good enough to not let that lead flip right and I think in past Seasons it would have flipped this year they okay the Pacers made their run the Celtics had this crappy third quarter uh you prefer

That they don’t have that crappy third quarter but they did but in the fourth quarter they turn things around they go on a a run to start the fourth quarter that that lead ends up growing to like 13 15 and it’s kind of reestablished the Celtics have now reestablished a double digit lead

And aside from the end of the the fourth quarter where again the Celtics kind of let go a little bit that was uh a nice response and I think the that’s the biggest takeaway here is that that nice response is more important right now than than kind of anything because as I

Keep talking about it’s the end of January we’re heading into February here the All-Star break is just a couple weeks away these guys see vacation coming you know it I know you you’re going to work right if you got a vacation coming up how are you going to

Feel on like Tuesday when you know that vacation in know in five days you are going to the Bahamas you’re going to some place incredibly nice and you say well John I’m not paid $30 million well you know what human nature doesn’t care about your $30 million when you got a vacation coming

Up you know you got a vacation coming up you your your brain just like oh man I need this break if you’re feeling kind of like sore or achy or just mentally drained at all then a break coming up that you can see coming just makes it

That much more oh God I need that break I want that break that that it increases that desire to stop doing what you’re doing a little bit more human nature and so you got to team like the Pacers that always want to seem to prove themselves

Against the Celtics they’ve got a ton of talent Aaron neith has this grudge against the Celtics which I do not understand at all the Celtics did him a favor like I I I feel like he I don’t know whatever guys guys need to get their motivation from wherever nce Smith

Had an amazing game in this one he led the Pacers uh he was their their top guy in the first half that I’m talking about where where he had 15 he ended up with 26 to lead the Pacers mostly because Ty Tyrese halberton had a minute’s restriction and he didn’t he didn’t have

The best game he looked like a guy coming off of an extended absence but you know n Smith had a great game uh offensively look 26 points 12 rebounds seven assists he was never going to play 42 minutes like he did in this game 41 minutes uh in Boston the Celtics did him

A favor by trading him to Indie they got him the opportunity that he needs and and there this is what the Celtics were always hoping for but he could never do it without minutes to grow so congratulations to him man good for you Aaron n Smith everybody here is happy

For you don’t you don’t have to go crazy you don’t have to take it personally it’s just this is how it goes and it wouldn’t have been this Aon Smith if he was in Boston but regardless the Pacers impressive there’s two teams involved in these types of

Scenarios uh where one team blows a lead there’s there’s always another NBA team there it’s not just the Celtics oh the Celtics blew the lead no the Pacers had something to do with it and so good good for them and good for the Celtics for finding a way to pull through and and

Get this this win that’s the important part get through this part of the schedule so you can just pile up the wins and find a way the Sixers lost again so the opponents are starting to lose the Celtics keep on winning so that’s important we’ll continue this we’ll talk about the mentality here

Behind it Joe missoula’s mentality uh I’ll talk about that in just a second Today’s Show is brought to you by eBay Motors eBay has teamed up with Josh Lloyd of the lockdown fantasy P podcast to bring you the best fantasy picks each week all season long so if you’re doing

Exclusions Apply thanks for making lockdown Celtics your first listen every day go check out lockdown sports today 247 streaming Sports Talk not Sports yelling not Sports crap uh contrived whatever to get you angry Sports Talk the biggest stories on all day every day put it on enjoy sports because they’re enjoyable

It’s not some theater whatever it’s fun and they have fun there on lockdown sports today all right let’s get back to the conversation and I think one of the things that stood out to me immediately the day after with the Celtics on the back toback which is a factor like

They’re considering all of the things that they’re going through uh look a good team a good team at this point in January I keep saying it a good team at this point in January what did what do the Celtics have to play for you sit there and you say okay look and

Porzingis even said it after the game you know you you know you’re capable of winning when you’re not 100% locked in and at this time of year when you’ve got some leeway you tend to take it right if you’re burning calories and you say well I’ve burned a

Thousand calories I got I got a little extra so I can have a couple of cookies right I don’t have to I don’t have to be at my best because I’ve I’ve built up I’ve burned a lot of these calories Celtics have a lot of these wins they’ve

Built the lead they gonna have some cookies so this that’s the mentality that you have to fight but Joe moula uh yesterday or after the Pelicans game was happy that that was a struggle he said I hope we we lose more leads I hope we

Have 10 or 15 more types of games like this we want to erase this feeling of entitlement and he’s talking about us he’s talking about me and you this entitlement of like this Celtics team is so good that they should just be rolling from top to bottom and he this is Joe

This is classic Joe moula he wants the the Hard Road he wants the mentality to be tested and so it was tested it was tested in the New Orleans game was tested in this Pacers game he wants these other teams to put their best foot forward and he wants the Celtics to have

To figure this out and and learn these lessons of well there’s this type of uh adversity how do you get through this type of adversity how can they get through these these tough stretches where here we are February’s coming around you got the Lakers coming in you got a few games at

Home maybe you’re chilling at home maybe you’re very comfortable at home and you just are like well hey look the Lakers everybody gets up for the Lakers but the Lakers are also not very good and so there could be a little bit of a ah we

Don’t need to be our best to beat the Lakers and it’s still LeBron and AD and it’s still you know hey if you take them lightly they could they can hurt you and you don’t want to lose to the Lakers at home that would suck but Joe keeps preaching this

Mentality and you hear like we asked Drew holiday about the mentalities like you know Joe said that he likes when you blow leads and he’s like yeah he does he really does uh confirming the lunacy but it’s not that Joe wants the Celtics to blow leads

That’s that’s how he put it that’s the quote but what he wants is the mentality to be tested that’s what he wants he what he really wants to happen is the Celtics to increase their lead to fight off challenges to he wants to be able to come out after a game and

Sit in front of me and my media Brethren and look at us and say we made all the right plays we made all the right reads we made all the right passes we took all the right shots and we played the right kind of Defense we came into it with the

Right mindset we executed throughout 48 minutes and we leave with the right mindset that to him is perfection and that could mean any kind of result that’s the difference that’s how Joe Missoula thinks you can have all of that that I just laid out perfect right mindset right this

Right that right that and still lose right like it’s not about do the shots fall or not I me obviously you want the shots to fall but Joe wants the right decisions to be made and when the right decisions are made constantly you’re going to win a lot

More than you lose a lot more than then you lose that’s what he wants and he says it all the time each game is its own thing each game is its own entity you have to win differently every game there’s no single formula to you drive you kick you hit the corner

Three or you drive kick Swing Swing and that’s a shot you take or you drive kick Swing Swing drive again and that’s how you win no because like I said before there’s another team there the Pacers exist they have talent they are well coached they have a style that is

Disruptive they have a say in how the game will go so you can do all the exact same things and you can look terrible one day and you can look on the game film be like well they did the exact same thing as they did the game before

And they won the game before by 20 and they lost this one by 15 how is that possible because it’s not about you stand here you stand there you stand there and you do this and that it’s not a formula it’s not formulaic it’s not choreography it’s mentality that’s where

Joe moula wants his team to get so when he sees a game like this against the Pacers he’s like happy he’s thrilled by how this went because now it’s another opportunity to say why didn’t we box out why didn’t we how did we miss these 10 controllable defensive rebounds that we

Should have gotten and you look at it on film you say okay this is how you know we had to survive the Celtics had to shoot the lights out to survive this challenge they shot 47% from the three 17 of 36 they gave up 19 off offensive

Rebounds so Indiana was 50 of 108 they got 108 shot attempts up plus they got to the line 15 times so it’s really more than 108 shot attempts meanwhile Boston gets up 87 they went to the line 22 so went a little bit more than 87 but still

That’s a big dispar disparity this 21 shot difference because they gave up 19 offensive rebounds you can’t give the other team that kind of mathematical advantage and expect to survive and so mentally the Celtics have to get to themselves to a place where they are executing and making these

Little plays and figuring it out that’s what Joe moula wants that’s what these games are about and as much as these games can be heart attack inducing and frustrating to some people first of all they’re still wins second of all these will benefit the Celtics down the road

When they are in the play playoffs and they have to fight through this stuff and there’s no timeouts left and they the these are the types of games these are the types of wins that they’re going to have to have in the playoffs so all of this stuff has meaning at this point

Let’s get to some of the individual performances that I haven’t talked about yet and uh just wrap up our conversation here on this win over the Pacers we’ll do that in just a second Today’s Show is brought to you by LinkedIn LinkedIn isn’t just another job board

Apply thanks for making lockon Celtics your first listen every day go check out lockdown NBA they’re talking about all these games uh I’m normally hosting on on Wednesday but uh because I’m here at the Garden and it’s 2:30 in the morning uh did not get over to the lockdown NBA

Side so go check out Jake Madison and Hayes from lock on bulls filling in for me today that’s going to be a great show I can’t wait to listen to it I’ll probably listen to it tomorrow uh on my morning drive so uh that’s going to be

Fun you should do the same thing too all right let’s get into some of these individual performances uh against the Pacers uh I I have yet to mention Drew holiday uh as far as his performance on the floor once again an ultra efficient six of eight

Three of three from three two of two from the line 175 and four the four four assists uh nice there three blocks a steal uh just a great all-around game from holiday who just fills in these gaps there was no Al Horford no Luke cornette uh so shout outs to mayash kada

Now kada 14 minutes ended up being a plus 15 so he made a positive impact still wasn’t the like the best game like I thought he made some some mistakes he only had one rebound that to me is a problem I think in the beginning of the second quarter where the Celtics had

Some some issues things slowed down he was in the game he’s just he’s big he’s not the most Nimble guy like he’s not slow per se but he moves slower than everybody else on the floor so he probably looks slower than he actually is uh but the one rebound that’s a

Problem for me but he did fill in nicely and that’s kind of all you need from kada fill in fill in the gaps until porzingis can come back in and play por has played 31 minutes he didn’t have a good game either he finished with some nice numbers 17 points 12 rebounds but

I’m surprised to see him with the 12 rebounds four turnovers was too many five personal fouls was not great uh he was attacked by Pascal sakam over and over like porzingis I just saw him getting moved off the ball moved off his spot uh it was not his best performance

Uh but he did have a couple of big shots he hit a couple of shots early uh a big shot down on the post late they ran an out of timeout play to get him a shot in the post which he converted so even on a

Night that wasn’t his best he had a a nice uh you know a couple of nice buckets that helped the Celtics win like that that everybody has to make their contribution uh Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown have not mention these guys much yet Tatum they combined for 50 against

New Orleans they combined for 50 55 in this one 30 for Tatum 25 for brown they each shot better than 60% although Jaylen was over for three from three Jason was four of nine from three uh Jaylen got to the line eight times seven of eight so a nice kind of efficient

Game from him uh six rebounds for him seven for Tatum two assists for brown seven for Tatum two steals for Jaylen a steel and two blocks for Tatum that combin is again it’s just steady you can count on that 55 points for those guys that’s a nice steadying kind of force Derek

White was huge in the first half Jaylen did a lot of his damage in the second half Derek white comes in hot just as hot as he was at the end of the last game comes in in the first quarter just drilling everything uh he ended up four

Of seven from three eight of 16 overall four four from the line he had five assists the Celtics were moving the ball when you’re hitting shots obviously you’re going to make uh you’re going to get those assists but uh the starters once again mostly you know with

Porzingis not having uh his best game but again 17 points and 12 rebounds you know it’s not it was a bad like efficiency game because he took 17 shots to get 17 points but when you’re when you’re piling up the points when you’re just looking at 129 124 you need all the

Points you can get to beat the Pacers so even on a bad night porzingis still found a way to put the ball in the basket and contribute in some ways so uh but the backourt the backourt was was spectacular between Derek white and Drew holiday the wings were spectacular

Brown and Tatum porzingis an off night uh overall but he’s just coming back he had a couple days off and I don’t know how that left ankle feels uh he looked he looked fine so so I I expect him to continue like they’re going to have a

Couple days off uh coming up so uh they have Wednesday off they play Thursday they have a couple days off heading into the weekend and then the Sunday game against Memphis so maybe maybe he gets an extra day off there just to get some rest so we’ll see how they they manage

It but he looked he looked fine I didn’t I didn’t look at this game and think oh that ankle is bothering porzingis at all uh they got a nice contribution from Sam Hower uh overall I think everybody just kind of had decent you mostly decent performances uh brassette came in gave a

Little energy Payton Pritchard uh nothing to write home about but was on the floor for some positive stuff look the Celtics get an important win this is their fifth game incredibly against the Pacers who again they play this this style that as porzingis said after the game makes can make you look really

Really bad if you’re not careful and the Celtics weren’t entirely careful uh so they look bad for a stretch they come back they win they can get uh a day off to relax they got the Lakers coming in and you know anytime the Lakers are in

Town that’s going to be uh an important an important game it’s gonna be I think a TNT game so that’s going to be uh a very uh very much uh popular and it’s this place is going to be a little nuts the Lakers lost to Atlanta tonight so that’s that’s kind of embarrassing

Losing to the Atlanta Hawks the Lakers are now let me look at their record 24 and 25 below 500 10 games out of first and falling fast in the playin race they they might not even make the play in tournament so it’ be nice to kind of

Send them send them home send them home send a message no playoffs for you this time Lakers I’m done with this I’m done with this everybody’s talking about the Lakers they they’re a bad team the celic should treat them like a bad team I hope they come out with that mentality to

Beat the Lakers uh Focus but we’ll see we have a podcast tomorrow night we have a podcast after the Lakers game and then I’ll have uh the next podcast after that on the Sunday Kind of a normal podcasting schedule which still gives you five days a week Monday through

Friday so make sure you are subscribed wherever you get your podcast when they plan on a Friday night or Saturday night I will be here for bonus podcasts so you get that bonus content no one’s giving you this kind of podcasting no one’s giving you this kind of analysis no

One’s giving you just Celtics content that you can love uh hopefully this is enhancing your love for the Celtics and I’m going to be here for you every every chance I get so subscribe become an everyday and if you are already an everyday well everybody go ahead and

Share the podcast if you love it if you’re here and you’re like wow this is kind of cool share it spread the word tell everybody they should be listening to and watching the lockdown Celtics podcast it’s right here in the lockdown podcast Network to our team every day

The Celtics came out on fire, and it looked like they might run away with another home game against the Pacers. Derrick White was blistering hot to start the game, and Jayson Tatum was nearly perfect in the second. But the Pacers kept getting offensive rebounds and second chances and they erased a 20-point lead. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal gets into the hot start and the collapse, why the Pacers had plenty to say about the lead disappearing, Boston’s ability to recover, and why Joe Mazzulla loves games like this.

  1. Tough win man. So happy we are done playing the annoying pacers lol. Respect to them though, they always give us a good game! Even though we got robbed in Indiana, it wasn’t their fault.

  2. Shout out to KO for completely changing the dynamic of this team offense and defense capabilities. He is becoming the most beloved Celtic in recent time and it’s pure vibes around the team

  3. This game shows how important Kornet and Horford are. Kornet would’ve been getting those rebounds we kept missing! Queta won this game when he came in during the 4th! Had some big blocks and after the and one dunk I felt like our energy changed!

  4. These guys are for real! And Derrick White better make the All-Star team. Sure, he went through a rough shooting slump, but his defense, leadership by example and playmaking have been superb. He was just in another world early in the game and then capped it off with that block in the final moments. Some poor defense at times tonight and another sketchy 3rd Q, but when it really mattered they pulled it together-something that hadn’t happened in the last few seasons. Thank you John! ☘️🔒

  5. @John you can see it every game but Jrue and KP were easy to see in this game tonight. Thanks as always John for the peak behind the curtain

  6. Has anyone been tracking the longest streak (number of games successfully defended) any team has held onto the NBA belt this season?

  7. I like how players try to "stay aggressive" all the time and get rewarded. I tried just that and my family ended up lashing out at me and may have lost friends at work.

  8. Embid didn’t want to not qualify for 65 game rule so he played through injury and didn’t look right in the game then might have actually got injured in the end when Kuminga collapsed on his knee. Damn. So my question here is do teams have a right to tell their recovering or injury prone players “no you cannot go for All NBA, the goal is your health for playoffs” ?

  9. Damn, John berating me about keeping an eye on the prize while I devour a tasty cookie this morning was not on my bingo card.

  10. Dont look now but the knicks have crept into top 3 in the standngs…the celtics still need to finish strong heading into the allstar break

  11. They didn’t win they survived. They’re winning, I get it… but this team should be playing better overall basketball than it is. All this year has been is if they make their 3’s they win, if they don’t they lose. It’s boring and it’s so damn lazy. Idc about all the passing and moving if all that happens is a 25’ shot. They’ve got no interior presence bc Mazzulla doesn’t care. It’s negligent. When they get into they playoffs this 55 3-pointers per game isn’t going to get it done. They’ve GOT to develop some sort of interior game and it makes me insane that mazzulla has no intention of having the team work on that. JT can get to the rim WHENEVER he wants, they’ve got two incredible point guards. USE THEM! Let white or Jrue bring the ball up and facilitate. I know I’m a little old school but this insane volume of threes and the hero-ball, iso sh!t late in games is going to kill then if it doesn’t change.
