What are the expectations for the newly-acquired Phoenix Suns players?

It was a busy day with the NBA trade deadline and the Suns made their big deal today and you were the first to report what was going out from the Phoenix Sons today uh what came in was Royce O’Neal and David Rody O’Neal coming from the Brooklyn Nets Rody

Coming from the Memphis Grizzlies and obviously O’Neal is the big name and we’ll talk about him in a second uh we were all trying to figure out what exactly the deal looked like and you were the first to report that it was you know spare parts going out kada Bates

The up Utah w I Jordan Goodwin chimi metsu that three different second round picks a trade exception all of that was on their way out and suddenly the Suns took their spare parts and they turned them into a guy who’s probably their second player Off the Bench in their

Playoff rotation that’s a pretty successful day it’s a huge win for the Suns huge win for matsh beer and Josh bartelstein and um and James Jones Frank vogle like they they added a player like they added a rotation piece and what we said yesterday was they never they were

Not going to trade for a player unless he was going to be in their top nine and that was the case now I will say this on on the miles Bridges stuff I know there was a lot of faulty reporting out there by others they were never close to

Getting miles Bridges they had interest in him but they never got to the point where they discussed names and picks and stuff like that they had some interest they actually hadn’t talked to him in a while so that was all there was a lot of false reporting out there about miles

Bridges we told you from the gecko they liked him but it was very very unlikely they were going to get him they it just chances were extremely slim they just never were they focused on Royce O’Neal for about two weeks for about two weeks they were focused on Royce O’Neal they

Were able to get a deal done was he their number one choice no I think they liked the fun Teo kid from Utah a little bit better interesting I think they liked him a little bit better but I mean very similar like they really liked

Royce O’Neal and he’s a he like fun Teo he’s a guy that was going to break their top n and that’s what they wanted let me get a guy that could come in here and be in my rotation I think he’s going to be their seventh guy off the bench I really

Do he he certainly projects to that and you know I mentioned spare parts and among those spare parts were basically three wing players that the Suns if just one of them had worked out just one the Suns probably didn’t need to make this deal today I mean it really I I think

That’s that’s a good way to look at it so you’re saying if kab bit’s DF had worked out they wouldn’t have needed Ro you’re right I think you’re right I think if one of the wing players had worked out now I like Wabi is a shooter

B Bates DPP was a guy that you thought could defend a lot so I’ll go with you on that one if kada Bates DPP had worked out no way they make this trade today yeah and I think even if wanabi had worked out if he had been such a good

Shooter that you could live with his defensive liability out there I think that too would have minimized their need to go get Royce O’Neal but but because none of them worked out because they threw all of these oneyear player option guys up against the wall hoping just one

Of them would stick because none of them did I think it put them in this position of of really if they’re really serious about winning a championship of needing to go find a guy who can be that Wing player Off the Bench who can be that guy

Who can hit a wideopen three if he’s left alone who can defend some PR uh Premier Wing players out on the perimeter defend Paul George you can defend kawi Leonard he’s that type of player you can you can match him up with them for sure yeah and so Royce O’Neal

Becomes that guy I went back and looked at his playoff history over his career he is a guy who in the last four postseasons has routinely average 27 to 33 minutes per game he played for the Nets he played for the Jazz he’s a postseason guy he gets minutes in the

Postseason and on this team he doesn’t even need to give give him a lot of postseason minutes we’re talking about 12 to 18 minutes a game probably but he’s a guy who’s got the experience and who has done that and who fills a need for the Phoenix Suns and they didn’t

Really give up anything of these four players they give none of them were playing none of them were giving them serious minutes they were all bench guys come in at the at the end of a blowout game spare parts that you could easily get rid of and nobody’s going to miss

Them nobody’s going to miss him they weren’t playing you 100% now what is you know oal a 32-minute guy like nurkic and and Grayson Allen in the playoffs no but he’s probably in the Eric Gordon mold of can I get you know 15 to 20 minutes a

Game in the playoffs he’s probably in that mold yeah he and the miles Bridges thing that that was finalized this morning and you had said that it was unlikely I I and I know what you said that the it was unlikely the suns were going to get them but they there was

Interest there at some point this morning midm morning around 9:00 or so the news broke that he’s informed the Charlotte Hornets I’m I’m going to veto any trade that comes along I’m not going I I want to stay I he backto back 40o nights for the Charlotte Hornets by the

Way um but I think the and even if he would even if he had wanted to be traded it wasn’t going to be to here it wasn’t going to be here the suns were never going to get him they they they showed interest but to your point yeah he had

Two really good games in a row and now he wants to stay in Charlotte all right um David Rody on the other hand the other acquisition a very unique player he was a first round draft pick a year ago he’s in the middle of his second season now with the Memphis Grizzlies

He’s not tall he’s 6’4 65 built like a football player built like a M Truck thick thick thick plays a and I don’t know that much about him because I I he doesn’t get a ton of minutes he’s really struggled to shoot this year like a lot struggled to shoot he’s a very

Interesting guy probably not a candidate to get post season minutes probably a a deep bench guy for the rest of the season but I’ll be curious to get him here and see how he defends see how he matches up against some of the more physical players that they’ll play

During their regular season to see if he can earn himself any minutes because he’s a very unique player in the NBA I spoke to some teams around the league today just sayy let me give me your thoughts on David Rody and is listen listen the way the Suns play this is

What I thought the way the Suns play with all their switching he could really help he’s a big strong body plays a lot bigger than 65 because he’s thick he could guard bigger guys he has trouble trouble with speed guys but guard the bigger guy so I’m pleasantly surprised

Uh by what I heard about David Rody I’ll be honest I didn’t know a lot about him so I had to do my checking around the league and everything I heard about him was very good so I I don’t know that he busts into that top nine rotation but I

Think you got to give him a look now right at least give him a look and see if he could be a guy that does that and he’s also somebody who’s on a controlled cost contract for the future which is kind of important now for the Phoenix

  1. Which point guard are we going to pick up on the buyout market, our favorite John Wall because he is talented, a veteran and has experience with Bradley Beale.

  2. I think Roddy is a solid pickup. He is def that defender I can see guarding an Aaron Gordon or even Lebron type player … he’s kinda like a Jae Crowder that can handle the rock better

  3. If the Suns traded Yuta, 3 2nd rounders, and a trade exception for O'Neil, it would have been a great trade. The fact that we trade 3 additional players who are BETTER than Roddy who can't shoot, makes no sense.
