Nets fire Jacque Vaughn as team continues downward spiral
Major news coming down around the Brooklyn Nets a day after the NBA All-Star Game on Monday the Nets announced they have relieved jacqu vau of their head coaching duties so let’s talk some Nets Hoops we’re going to do with New York Post Nets beat Rider Brian
Lewis who joins me now Brian how you doing all right how you doing I’m doing okay thought you might have got to enjoy some you know relaxing time during this All-Star break but news never stops we know this and we got the news that came down today and Brian I think the timing
Of V’s firing was shocking to most fans what did make of the Nets moving on now and how do you evaluate his tenure as head coach in Brooklyn oh there’s a lot to unpack there uh I thought that it was reasonably likely that he would be gone in the summer slash offseason whatever
You want to call it uh I do think that the 50-point loss in Boston and even more so the reaction from some of the players to the loss and in the lead in probably just accelerated that process now everybody knows you you just don’t do transactions during the All-Star
Game uh or even during the All-Star break that is something that the NBA frowns on and I’m including you know the skills competition three-point and I’m I’m discount I’m including all that so Sunday Saturday and essentially Friday were off limits you know this they did this early enough this morning that it
Seemed that this decision had been made some time ago but they just had to wait several days to do it so if you’re asking me was I surprised that jacqu was let go no if you’re asking me did I necessarily expected to come this Monday
If you’d ask me a month ago I would have been surprised um if you would ask me after that Boston game when I’m listening to Mel talking I figured at that point yes the shock was not long for the job yeah seemed like the writing on the wall
Might have been there after that game I wanted to move on from that by talking about Shawn Marx the general manager he’s hired three coaches in his time as GM of the Nets never made a Conference Finals in his eight years on the job do
You think he will get a chance to hire a fourth head coach in eight seasons I don’t know I I I would be lying if I told you to a certainty that I know what I would say is this up until this point Point uh josi the owner and Shawn Marx have been
In lock step they have been in agreement um sha has held Joe’s greatest confidence and I am not necessarily saying that any of those things have changed I would only say one that it is rare to see somebody get the opportunity to fire three coaches and hire a
Fourth uh this is not a situation where I don’t know it’s University of Houston somewhere and they’re getting their coaches their winning coaches plucked by a power five five team that’s not what this is as you correctly point out you’re talking about four coaches and one playoff series
Win that’s a lot to ask but that doesn’t mean that Shawn won’t get the opportunity to do it I don’t know to a certainty that he’ll get to do it and generally speaking when people have ever asked me about his job situation I’ve said I assume sea will be here
Because everything that I’m hearing would imply that he would be here now I just I don’t know yeah we will see what happens with that moving forward and if the Nets will get either a new GM to go with a new head coach or what they do
But in terms of head coaching interim head coach and that’s announced after the firing of jacqu vaugh that Kevin Ali will be the interim head coach for the rest of the season you tweeted this you said you thought that he would be the likely Choice what can Ali bring to this
Struggling net Squad right now well the same way we talked about players and they need to respond to jacqu or jacqu needs to get them to respond one thing we’ve seen is that they do respond to Kevin Hy um after the Charlotte loss Jacques had or allowed Kevin Oli to give them a
Rousing speech and they performed exceptionally well against Orlando um Kevin Ali is a guy that players like and players gravitate to and he’s coach I mean we saw his success when he was coaching at Yukon uh a guy who was capable of winning a national title back in
2014 so what you’re getting is a guy who has coached has dealt with younger guys right um and a guy who is someone that players like and respect now what we have to see is his ex’s and O’s at the NBA level yeah that’s what we got to see I
Haven’t seen that yet we’ll see if he’s able to do that with this roster and what he can do going forward the rest of the season now Brian last thing for me because you and I we talked about this around the trade deadline when you came
On the live trade deadline show but with this coaching change I think a major question for Nets fans is what is the plan for Brooklyn going forward does this coaching change change anything as far as their plans or do you think it’s the same where they want to build with
Mel Bridges and sort of retool this roster oh well when you say this coaching change uh are we referring about going from Jac vaugh to Kevin Oly yes I were you referring to yeah no that doesn’t that certainly doesn’t change anything from a 30,000 foot view I mean the team is the
Team at this point Kevin Ali is merely going to be asked to try to get the team stabilized and going in an appropriate Direction um because it was not going in an appropriate Direction before you know it was implying that things were only going to get worse right so he’s being
Asked to stabilize things he is not going to be asked to be making Command Decisions about the future of the franchise those are decisions that are going to be made over the summer that’s going to be about who’s coaching next year and who the general manager is next
Year if that is sha or if it is not Shan uh I don’t think Kevin Oly is going to be Ted with making those kind of decisions at least not yet not in the immediate future right not unless he somehow earns the permanent job right
And that is yet remains to be seen so we will see what the future is for head coach interim head coach excuse me Kevin Ali also GM Shawn marks and the Brooklyn Nets that future will be determined we’ll see how they play over the last stretch of this season that is Brian
Lewis who does a great job of covering the Brooklyn Nets for the New York Post Brian always good to see you always good to talk to you enjoy the rest of your All-Star break thank you all right thanks for having me anytime
The Post’s Nets beat writer Brian Lewis joins New York Post Sports anchor Dexter Henry to discuss Brooklyn’s decision to dismiss Jacque Vaughn, appointing Kevin Ollie as the team’s interim head coach and if Joe Tsai will give GM Sean Marks the opportunity to hire a fourth full-time head coach.
