Should the Utah Jazz commit to REBUILDING?! | The Hoop Collective

Uh now Utah as we mentioned Utah’s pick is top 10 protected to Oklahoma City they have made it an unquestioned priority over the last month to keep that pick and as you said McMahon for a draft where we’re not seeing a lot of excitement we got some tanking going on

And there could be some more yeah and I think this is an interesting case because it’s top 10 and by the way this is this is from the Derek Favors salary dump which is like man Sam prey has pulled some moves in the last few years

This is a classic case of last few last few decades bro yeah this is a classic case of using cap space’s rebuilding team to benefit you down the road like turning Kurt Thomas into a lottery pick back it’s top 10 protected this year if it doesn’t convey it’s top 10 protected

Again next year before going top eight and so I think this is an interesting discussion and obviously the Jazz ran all kinds of numbers and discussed all kinds of scenarios but if if this draft is what everybody says it is in one of the weer drafts in a while there’s good

Players in every draft last time there’s a week draft there’s Giannis at 15 goar at 27 so on and so forth but you could argue it would be you’d be better off giving up 11 or 12 in this draft and then just moving on where you’ve got your pick moving forward uh

As opposed to keeping you know we’ll see where they land a lot maybe maybe they get lucky and win the thing we’ll see um but how much better can the Jazz realistically be especially with the West as loaded as it is and you’re going to have Memphis who’s going to be very

Likely good again next year I just think it’s gonna be tough for the Jazz to be a whole lot better off next year when supposedly it’s a much stronger draft I mean what do we does this what do we think and you studi them a lot obviously McMahon the fact that they’re

Doing this this year to me it signals one of two things right it would either say that a they think they’re going to try to take a significant jump next year and try to get significantly better right so then you’re giving up a pick that’s let’s just say 18 instead of 11

Right or do we think there’s a chance and I this is just me asking a question for the aggregators am not saying anything is happening along these lines do we think there’s some chance that they’re looking at this situation and going well we can renegotiate and extend

L Market in this summer but do we want to pay him $45 million a year or treat him like a max player or do we want to maybe cash him in trade him for a bunch of stuff and to your point when you look at the west and where Utah is maybe

They’re going to be one of the five worst teams in the league the next two years when the drafts are incredible strong with the boo with Cameron Boozer being in the draft in two years with Cooper flag and these other guys being in the draft next year and they say well

We’re gonna have a top 10 and a top eight pick the next two years and it’s not going to matter because we’re going to be bad anyway and so let’s keep our pick all three years do we think one of those pass is more likely you know the the one thing that

Danny a Justin Zan Ryan Smith have been consistent about is they’re trying to figure out a way to build a contender as quickly as possible and clearly they’re nowhere near that level so then you get into the discussion of what’s a what’s a more realistic path to a contender and

Certainly you can make a strong argument that especially in a market like salt salt City where free agency is just not going to be part of the equation that bottoming out is in your best interest I I don’t know exactly which route they’re going to take I’m not sure that they

Know exactly which route they’re going to take you know there was a lot of media talk about them listening to Larry marketing offers there there certainly wasn’t a whole lot of action that I’m aware of on that front right um so you know we’ll see how things progress

Um you know they they picked number nine overall Taylor Hendricks spent most of the year in the G league so you’re kind of hoping to get a Foundation piece there that’s still very much to be determined they got keante George uh just outside the lottery he’s the

Closest thing they have to a a young they just signed Kenneth Lofton Jr pancakes well I mean look I mean last year they signed Chris Dunn at this point in the season and he’s become useful player I’m not saying anything about they signed a three-year deal I’m just I’m commenting yeah and Darius

Basley as well you know another guy that’s a decent swing for a team in their position if one of those could become a rotation kind of guy next year like where they’re at it makes sense I just think it’s interesting the the position they’ve taken by ensuring they

Keep this pick it to me signals they could go in a couple of different directions yeah where if you if they were 12th this year and they gave up their pick to me that would be sort of a sign of all right now we have control over pick for sure going forward if

We’re going to like obviously they would be protected either way but it would be a sign that all right we have everything set up this way you still because it’s top 10 and top eight protected they’ still got pretty good flexibility I think to either push forward if they

Want or go the other way and make sure they keep their pick because if they do really want to keep their pick the next couple years I don’t think it’ll be that hard also look they’ve drafted pretty well they have gone out there and looked at this and watched all these players

And actions over words their actions say there must be some reason they like trying to get in the top 10 on this draft who what do you mean they’ve drafted pretty well I think tonay George is a pretty good draft pick okay and Taylor Hendricks who’s a number nine Pi

Not judging that I mean I think Mah’s point is this front office does not have a very long track record of drafting I mean zanic is an extension of the of the previous regime so it’s kind of like well Danny Ang is drafted pretty well in

His career I think he’s fair to say that I would say he’s had some pretty severe ups and downs well he’s been there for 30 years I would agree with that but I mean in his later stages in Boston I think he had some pretty significant misses in the middle part of the

Lottery that that’s what I would say now now look you had some huge I think most of the guy you know the core of that team is Danny Danny’s draft pick so I I mean I thought that would well yes they drafted they they they hit on obviously

Tatum and brown were phenomenal players like yes I’m I’m saying those were also top three picks there was choice there was some work that had to be done there I know I’m not Danny AG is really good at his job I just I think the jury’s out a

Little bit on him in terms of picking players if he’s picking players in the middle of the first round which by the way is the case for a lot of people it’s a grab bag in the middle of the first round well it’s not and there’s just

Like on this roster there’s not very many Jazz draft picks I mean you know you you you go down the roster there there are the three from this year keonte George is had he might be a a second Team all rookie selection he’s had a very encouraging rookie year

Hendrickx who’s a project who they hope can become like a supercharged version of a Robert Covington um since hasn’t played a whole lot at the at the NBA level and that’s and that’s it that’s the Jazz draft picks I mean Walker Kessler was a Timberwolves draft pick right who they

Got in the trade yeah everybody else’s trades good evaluation by them to trade for him for sure yeah I mean they’re they got a really good front office but they were G I mean we’re not gonna go down the list of jazz draft picks it’s I’m not gonna give them too much credit

For Walker Kessler because guess what whoever the whoever the Wolves picked at number 22 they were taken along with four other first round picks and you’re right right okay they they got o abaji too who they’ve already ret traded so that’s a fair point okay so um Bon you mentioned that Kurt Thomas

Trade I just want to I because you mentioned it I just want to go back real quick and talk about real quick because it really is sort of a benchmark trade in NBA history and it was done in Sam prey’s first year as GM when he was

Still that this Seattle Sonics do you remember the Dynamics of that trade yes the Phoenix Suns owned by a very cheap person who no longer owns the team I systematically made a series of moves to make their team worse by saving money and one of them was to trade two future

First round picks to the Seattle SuperSonics along with Kurt Thomas to save a lot of money and that was fix became uh I don’t remember these specific players but they both became uh if I remember correctly impact players in the league believe one of wasaka I think it was even worse than that

Because they ret traded Kurt Thomas a few sometime later to San Antonio for another first round pick and Kurt Thomas was making $8 million he was not making $27 million and that was back when the tax was for dollar so you know they save some money but they they they turned taking on8

Million salary they turned it into three first round picks yes that’s all we don’t need to go and do it more than that I’m just saying it’s a different time not everybody was uh totally an asset I believe in different moves the Suns traded the picks that became Lu Al

Dang raan Rondo and serg Baka I believe yeah and and I think in the case of Rond I think they just didn’t they I believe so yes they just here $3 million here and I think it was like the 15th pick or something like that out the lottery what’s that Matt isia would

Never well nobody I don’t think the league would allow it uh [Applause] anymore NBA on is

  1. What on earth? This is a rebuild. Their best players are under contract for several years. They have one player over 30 – only four players 26 or older. How do you people have jobs?

  2. In this "fire a good coach because we feel like it" age, that should be warranted if you don't have at least 2 All-Stars on the roster.

  3. LAURI MARKKANEN is a stud I think. I'm not saying he is a #1 star you can win a chip with, but in today's NBA he is a legit 2nd option on a title contending team IMO. Unfortunately, Utah is not a place free agents want to go. Never will be. If you paired him with say a Luka as a center and put 3 and D guys around them watch out.

  4. The problem is they aren’t bad enough to be high enough in the lottery. And as a small market team, they won’t attract top tier FAs

  5. Jazz are rebuilding but the guys in podcast are actually asking if they should totally bottom out.

Well, front office have said that they want to build around Lauri and there has been rumours from pretty credible sources that Jazz shut down Pacers when they tried to ask if they could trade for Lauri. So they most likely are not going to sell him if they don't get something absolutely crazy back. Otherwise who knows what they want to do 🤷‍♀️ Ainge has though said that he doesn't want to drag out this rebuild while still wanting to make sure Jazz will have long championship window.

Oh and Keyonte has been great and Hendricks and Sensabaugh are looking like they can at minimum be rotation players and we will see if they can be more when they have had longer run with the Jazz instead of Stars. After Kessler being so highly touted last year and having quieter year this year though I try to not be too high on Keyonte so I won't set myself up to disappointment next season 😅

  6. Jazz can trade their vets without giving up their bright young players like Kessler or Markannen if they want to get worse to get higher picks.

  7. I think Utah just need to be patient. The opportunity was there to go mega tank mode last season, now they probably just need to wait.

  8. Lauri is a bonafide #3 on a championship team. Keyonte is a great role player starter on a championship team. Kessler right now could be a good backup center on a championship team. JC is a good 6th man on a championship team.

And everyone else needs to go. And we need to get a super star #1, a complimentary all-star #2, a glue guy X-factor #4. And one or two strong backups.

The Jazz could trade for the #4 and the two backups, but they will need the draft to get the #1 and #2. So bottom out all the way in my opinion.

  9. Jazz compete, play hard every night. But they have no identity, they play freely as a team. I think Coach Hardy is still figuring it out with players Jazz have, the players have alot to prove to the franchise to stick around. Alot of good contracts to flip if something comes up. Its been fun as a Jazz fan. They have lots of options. Go Jazz!!
