How Jalen Green & Amen Thompson Ignited Houston Rockets In Blowout Win Vs Washington Wizards

On today’s show Jaylen green and Amin Thompson that’s it that’s the intro it’s coming up on today’s lock on Rockets this is Mission Control Houston ignition sequence starts 6 5 4 3 2 1 what’s up and welcome to another edition of locked on Rockets your daily podcast home for everything Houston

Rockets basketball as always I’m your host Jackson Gatlin native eonian and credential media member I’m also the host of locked on NBA Mondays be sure to follow along on Twitter at JT Gatlin and the show of course at lockon Rocket free and available wherever you listen to your podcast including YouTube and as

Always thank you so much for making lock on Rockets part of your day every single day thank you for being an every dayer whether it’s on your way to work on your lunch break in the gym thank you for making the show part of your day every

Single day the Houston Rockets with a 137 114 Molly whopping of the Washington Wizards who side note as an organization deserve to like be relegated they are so bad this is such a bad Wizards team um and the rockets took care of business they beat a bad team there’s not a ton

Of say analysis from this one but it was so much fun watching Jaylen Green and A Min Thompson just torch the Wizards we also got a very strong 18 and 14 out of Jabari Smith Jr and then block landale jock the Saucy Aussie with seven blocks in this game a career high for

Him Jaylen green tied his career high with 42 points Amin Thompson set a career high with 25 points and this was just a fun game to watch the Rockets just go off right they took care of business against a bad team and it actually kind of looked like that maybe

Wasn’t going to be the case for about two and a half quarters of this game cuz as good as thing started out with Jaylen green on fire early in this game he had 19 first quarter points shot six of nine from the floor he was scorching hot uh

The Rockets kind of crumbled there a little bit to where they shot four six from three in the first quarter and then they went 0 of 12 from long distance over a stretch including the entire second quarter and about half of the third quarter until Jaylen green and

Amin Thompson kind of reignited the ETS there about Midway through that third quarter and then they went on a huge run to close out the third quarter and they wound up winning that quarter 41 to 25 taking a double digit lead into the fourth quarter and then they just blew

This game completely wide open and this game was over by the start of the fourth quarter but it it took until that point for the Rockets to kind of generate and create that separation uh I mentioned the Rockets being 0 of 12 for a stretch there from three and then J jayen green

It actually the series that kind of or the the sequence of events that really got the Rockets rolling there in that third quarter Jaylen green had a really strong Drive where it looked like he kind of got fouled took some contact no whistle missed the layup and then am Min

Thompson went back up and just punched it on the putback dunk and then immediately the next couple possessions in a row Jaylen green drilled backto back triples the first threes for the rockets in this game since the first quarter again they had that stretch where they were just 0 of 12 or whatever

It was from from long distance so Jaylen hit a couple threes and Min Thompson had the putb dunk that generated some separation the Rockets lead suddenly ballooned to 10 plus and Jaylen was just on one the rest of that quarter he had a drive that looked I’m GNA say it and

Holland said it on the broadcast it looked Michael jordanes the way that he drove in elevated and then changed Direction midair and did like a little Up and Under scoop Lup through the defense after adjusting mid-flight uh it was an absolutely insane display of athleticism and this version of Jaylen

Green the Jaylen Green in this game that dropped 42 points tying his career-high 12 of 21 from the floor 7 of 13 from three 11 of 13 from the freether line got there 13 times in this game had 10 rebounds so another double double for Jaylen green his sixth career double

Double double after not recording any double doubles in his first two seasons and not recording any double doubles before the allstar break I maybe not before the All-Star break in the last 25 games I don’t know if that stretches all the way back to pre-all-star break I don’t think it does

But basically it’s his sixth double double in the last 25 games and it it shows a version of Jaylen green that is not only the alpha scoring threat that we know that he can be when everything is falling when the shots are there when the three-point shot is falling when

He’s aggressive th this was truly an all-around game right he scored from outside he scored from the mid-range he was scoring at The Rim he got to the free throw line this was an all-encompassing scoring performance from Jaylen Green in this one but on top of that right he didn’t just score the

Ball he was rebounding at an elite level he was setting up and creating for his teammates he only had three assists in this game but the wizard started straight up face guarding him and double teaming him as early as the second quarter when he checked back in

Because of how electric he was in the first quarter and even at the end of the first quarter the the Wizards started double teaming him and it led to wideopen shots for his teammates and Jaylen did a really good job there were a couple possessions where he got forced

Into you know a bad shot or a turnover very few and far between but for the most part he did a really good job when he saw the double team coming of reading and attacking it the right way either by passing out of the double team which

Would lead to a fouron three for his teammates and then generate a wide open shot like he generated one uh the Rockets got a wide open three for Jabari Smith Jr at the end of the first quarter out of one of the first double teams

That Jaylen green saw in this game uh or there were moments where the double team would come and it wasn’t like super aggressive and you know double teams coming from like the extra Defenders coming from the left wing so Jaylen would just drive to the right and get

Past his Defender because the defense was already out of position and then collapse or attack the basket that way this was just a really good allaround game for Jaylen green where you really saw you know him put everything together in one specific game and yes sure you

Can make the argument Wizards are a dumpster fire I get that it’s still really hard to have this kind of performance against any NBA team even one as bad as the Wizards right to put all this together to hit the number of shots that he did to hit the degree of

Difficulty on some of the shots that he did right he pulled another uh another step Curry no look in this one where he P you know pulled up from three and then immediately spun and turned around he glanced back at it he it wasn’t a it

Wasn’t a 100% pure no look three uh he did turn around and try to you know sneak a peek at it but the degree of difficulty with some of the shots that he was hitting in this one he was just on one in this game and when you see

This version of Jaylen green this is the version where you really hope that he’s tapped into something permanent that he can carry forward with him because we’ve seen his performances post Allstar break we’ve seen him kind of Catch Fire and have you know a series of you know 5 to

10 games or so where he looks unguardable where he looks like a future you know Superstar but because he’s doing all the little things now in this game you know the the rebounding the playmaking the defense he’s added all of that it’s not just hot shooting games anymore and even

Still even if you were to subtract the three-point shooting from this game he was still incredibly aggressive getting to The Rim finishing through traffic finishing through contact getting the the free throw line like that’s still a player that isn’t that’s not just a hot shooting game that’s a a player who can

Rely on other parts of his game even if the shot isn’t falling from the perimeter so you see this kind of performance from Jaylen green and you think that man if he can finish this year on a on a really strong note and keep this level of play up the Rockets

Absolutely have a shot to make the play in tournament now 8-1 in the month of March only two and a half games back of the Golden State Warriors for that final playing spot in the Western Conference and you start to think about the future of this team where if Jaylen can carry

This level of performance into next season oh my God you know Jaylen green playing like this Alper and shenon playing the way that he was playing all the other young guys getting a year better having another off season under their belt you know potential any other

Moves that the Rockets want to make in you know in the off season this is a team that might just be a Bonafide playoff team next year if they have this version of Jaylen green all season long they would have been a Bonafide playoff team this season if they had this

Version of Jaylen green all year long I said it earlier on the show you know earlier this season back in like December or so but this team is a jayen green leap away from being a legitimate threat in the Western Conference and it took a lot of bumps and bruises along

The road and credit to em odoko for his patience with Jaylen green but it looks like he’s maybe finally turned to the corner and has figured some things out so coming up want to talk about the rest of this game am Min Thompson his incredible performance in this one a

Career-high 25 points also a double double for am Min Thompson 25 and 10 in this game his continued growth as a screening and rolling presence how the Rockets are utilizing him in this newfound starting lineup also got to talk about Jabari Smith Jr’s 18 and 14 performance block landale just

Basketball now before getting to Amin Thompson and his really impressive game in this one again 25 points 10 rebounds 10 of 12 shooting from the floor five of seven at the free throw line before discussing what he did in this one uh quick couple notes here first off uh

Jaylen green did actually share with everyone at the end of this game when asked by Rockets Courtside reporter Vanessa Richardson uh his motivation for his his play you know how he’s been playing since the All-Star break uh he said my family my baby and so that’s you know a official confirmation from Jaylen

Green uh expecting his first child uh with Drea and so congratulations to him and and you know if that’s the the motivation that that he needed if that’s you know if him becoming a father is kind of inspiring his recent play as of late then then more power to him uh but

It was really cool to kind of have him share that moment with rockets fans live on TV uh and then past that for the actual game flow of this one you know mentioned early on that you know the Rockets had to blow things open there in the third

Quarter and that the Wizards were actually right there going toe-to-toe with the rockets for about two and a half quarters of this game and a big part of that is because the Wizards were just unconscious from three through the first half of this one I mean they could

Not miss from downtown Cory kissper got off to a really hot start in this game uh cooled off quite a bit as the game went along uh and then on top of that he was cor poor Cory kissper he was getting absolutely uh just bullied by the

Rockets on the defensive side of the ball the Rockets were hunting kissper constantly and getting him on an island against you know whether it was Jaylen whether it was Ain Thompson going downhill on him uh even you know Dylan Brooks whatever Jabari on a post up like they were just constantly hunting Cory

Kispert defensively in this game and that feels really bad because if you’re going to have a guy who’s like a weaker Defender out there and you’re going to willingly switch him onto guys that are clearly going to try and take advant of him offensively you need to have a

Better defensive game plan right like if if kiser’s going to get switched on to jayen Green then he needs to know okay I’m like I’m forcing Jaylen left or I’m forcing him right or like where’s my help defense coming from right where I where am I trying to shade him to so

That I don’t get absolutely burned and I’m not just on an island by myself and the Wizards made no effort whatsoever to try and save uh kisper when he was isolated on whoever it was uh it happened with Jaylen a lot in this one uh so shout out to the rockets for doing

A really good job of executing their offensive game plan and finding that weak point within the Wizards defense and just attacking it incessantly in this game uh speaking of weak points uh amen thomps well not weak points weak points in the Wizards defense there we go that’s that’s the segue that I was

Looking for uh Amin Thompson was Sensational in this one because he continues to get better and better with each passing game in his new role as the primary screen and roll presence for this Rockets team because that was going to be one of the scary things about

Losing Alper and shingon and why there was a legitimate argument that maybe Jack landale should have been the immediate replacement for Alper and shingun in the starting lineup is because losing that screening presence really can hurt the Rockets a lot by you you flat out lose the screening presence

That helps open things up for guys like Fred Van vet and Jaylen green you also lose the rolling presence you lose the size on the interior all these different things but what Amin Thompson has been able to do in a very short amount of time you know growing and adjusting to his new

Role offensively it was really on display in this game to where I think a Min only had one maybe two buckets that were like straight up drives by himself like on ball drives where he just drove it in and like finished around the rim and then every other bucket that he got

He had were were off ball buckets where he either operated as the prim screener and rolled hard to the rim or he was kind of probing the Baseline and you know sitting in the dunker spot and cutting in at the last second or like I talked about in the first segment the uh

Offensive putback that he had that kind of helped ignite things there in the third quarter for the Rockets all of his buckets came off ball and his ability as an off ball presence has been so encouraging because he’s setting good hard screens for for Fred

For Jaylen and then when he rolls to the rim he’s actually cap of doing a lot when he gets kind of downhill rolling towards the rim because all he has to do is if the defense doesn’t pick him up immediately on the short roll he can catch the ball and he

Can make a read out of the middle of the floor very similar to how Alper and shinon would make reads out of the middle of the floor when he was the primary pick and roll Setter for this Rockets team now there were a few points

In this game where a men kind of got stuck between his decision- making where he wasn’t he just you know he wasn’t 100% sure if he wanted to go up for a shot or if he wanted to kick it out for you know an open three and there were

Some turnovers as a result of that in this game but you see him processing right you see him understanding okay if I set the screen here and then if I roll this way I’m going to be open for the pocket pass or they can Loft the ball

Over the top and then I have a decision to make once I’m in the middle of the floor kind of right around the free throw line or just inside the paint I have a decision to make am I going to attack the rim hard am I going to put

The ball on the floor am I just going to elevate and try and use my Hops and get over the top am I kicking it out for a three and as he gets more and more of these reps especially against Bad teams right it helps that he’s able to do this

Against a bad Wizards team that’s not a great defensive team and it’s going to help a ton when the Rockets get back to playing some of their upper echelon opponents that they have to face to close out the rest of this season if they want to be able to make a push for

The playing tournament getting these reps is going to be so important for him because elsewhere in the Rockets lineup they don’t have another guy that can really fulfill that role because unfortunately even though Jabar m j is technically the five in this lineup they almost exclusively use jabarus M junr as

A pick and pop threat offensively they don’t really have jabari’s screen and then roll towards the rim which side note I would say I’d like to see them do that a little bit more because you can have Jabari in the short roll and catch the ball over the top and then just

Elevate for a mid-range shot right there around the free throw line that’s his bread and butter shot I think that would actually be really beneficial for Jabari to not exclusively set the screen and and then pop out to the three-point line but to set a screen and kind of roll in

Towards the paint a little bit not to not with the idea that he’s like hard diving towards the rim like a true like a you know like a Clint capella type or whatever or like Alper and shenon does but just to keep a defense honest right

Because if if all Jabari does is set the screen and pop out to the three-point line it becomes really one-dimensional it becomes easy to game plan for defenses know what’s happening by and large they’re going to be willing to switch those actions and just call it a

Day but if you mix in a little bit more with Jabari then that can be a little bit more of a creative offensive option to go to as well but at least with am Min Thompson he’s setting good screens he’s rolling hard to the rim and you’re seeing him make positive reads whether

It’s for himself or for his teammates out of those opportunities and even though Amin Thompson was drafted as a point guard he was a primary ball handler for his entire career up to this point his ability to adapt and be versatile and learn and in an off ball

Capacity and an off ball role is I think incredibly exciting for his future and for his development as a player because it speaks volumes about his ability to adapt to different situations Ain didn’t just come in and he’s like I only know how to play with the ball in my hands he

Came in and the rockets were like all right we have guys that need the ball in their hands we have Fred we have Jaylen we have alpie they need the ball in their hands to be successful if you want minutes you’re going to have to learn

How to play without the ball hands and he was like all right bet I can do that and they’ve made him a really effective offb piece doing that so I do think that is incredibly important for his development process moving forward and what it says about him as a player and

His ability to learn and grow and adapt to new situations new environments new things and man I tell you when we when we look at the way that a men has been so effective as an offall piece all he’s got to do is tighten up that handle just

A little bit and it’s going to be game over watching him dominate you know when he does have the ball in his hands because you see these moments right where he where he drives in in and dunks on multiple Defenders at the same time when he’s just he’s just now kind of

Like learning and realizing that he is always going to be nine times out of 10 99% of the time going to be the most athletic guy on the floor bigger stronger faster than everybody else and he’s kind of learning how to utilize that athleticism to really just do

Whatever he wants to do on the floor again once he tightens up that handle a little bit it’s going to be really tough for anybody to guard Amin Thompson on the floor coming up want to share final thoughts from this one the 137 114 blowout got to talk about Jabari Smith

Jr a little bit Jack landale and his absolute block party in this game we’re going to get there in just one moment first today’s episode is brought to you by Nissan are you the kind of driver that likes to push things a little further ever wonder what Adventure could be waiting around the

And final segment here at lockdown Rockets your daily podcast home for every thing Houston Rockets basketball now one more note that I want to add about why I think this game felt uh as close as it did as needlessly close as it did for a couple reasons one I do

Think that the Rockets kind of had you know this level of they were they were playing down to their competition to to kind of start this game and then on top of that it did help that the the Wizards were just knocking down everything from long distance mentioned that earlier

Already but some of that was self-inflicted the Rockets did not do a very good job of closing out hard on three-point Shooters forcing the Wizards off the three-point line they got a lot of very easy uh uncontested wideopen threes early in this game but then as

The game pushed along I do think part of it was just when you have a team like the Wizards who are missing as many of their like actual core players right no Denny abdia no Kyle kusma whatever and you’re running out guys who are like kind of Fringe NBA players you know uh

Champagney uh Butler Bernard Gil basically the entire Wizards bench unit here all of those guys are playing out of their mind right they’re playing because they’re trying to prove that they belong in the NBA that they deserve you know NBA level standard contracts that they that they you know maybe

They’re auditioning for their next big team like all that stuff so you have all these guys who are really like playing on you know at an 11 or a 12 while maybe some of the Rockets were coasting through it a little bit because they’re like oh it’s just the Wizards you know

We don’t have to try super hard we’ll turn it on and we’ll beat them and not saying that’s the right approach it’s not you know you should handle business against every team and I’m glad that the Rockets did and they turned it on in that third quarter but giving up4 to a

Really bad Wizards team is probably still not so great I’m sure Oka is a little frustrated about the ease with which the Wizards were able to play some offense in this game and that continues to be you know a thing where we got to see can this Rockets team really hone in

And play like highlevel defense we’ve seen them against some really lackluster competitions so far now again we did see them completely shut down the Cleveland Cavaliers and that was really encouraging to see see them slowing down Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland but you know the Rockets have three more

Really easy opponents coming up on the schedule and then the heat like turns up quite a bit so it’ll be interesting to see if this new starting lineup can actually maintain the same level of defensive intensity that the Rockets have been able to kind of have more or

Less throughout the entirety of the season and I think they should be able to again the the this this the new starting lineup lets them do some things defensively they weren’t able to do with Alper and shenon so I’m not necessarily worried about it it’s just something to

Monitor that this team did kind of play down to their competition a little bit in this game but uh Jabari Smith Jr had a strong performance in this one 18 points 14 rebounds had a steal in there seven of 13 shooting just a a quiet night where Jabari just did his work

Right put his head down got his rebounds hit the open shots that he was given within the flow of the offense and that was that now he I will say at one point he hit a little bit of a dream Shake move and that was really exciting to see

Um kind of caught the ball uh just outside you know kind of on the right block and you know hit a little bit of a shoulder shimmy dream Shake s kind of move and then turned around and immediately uh feathered in the fade away and you know for a team that was

Really struggling to shoot the three ball for a stretch in this game I will say that it would have been nice to see maybe them go to Jabari a little bit more uh down low I do think that that’s something that and i’ I’ve said it I

Don’t even know how many times this season but I’m going to continue to say it that in games where the Rockets really are struggling to knock down perimeter shots I would like to see them go to Jabari a little bit right as kind of that that steadying presence that guy

You can just dump the ball down into him and let him go to work right he’s kind of when he when Jabari gets the ball on the Block he’s kind of LaMarcus Aldridge esque right in the way that he can turn and fade and it’s an automatic like

Bucket from that fade away because he’s so tall he can he elevates and his release point on his jumper is so much higher than anybody else nobody can block that shot right it’s almost unguardable actually it is pretty much unguardable so I’d like to see the

Rockets kind of tap into that a little bit more they didn’t really need to in this game because Jaylen you know had the really hot first quarter and then only three points there in the second quarter but then picked it up again in the third quarter and and they were able

To create that massive separation and it was game over but we’ve just seen the season where the Rockets offense kind of you know stagnates a little bit and I’d like to see them maybe try to mix things up a little bit more get the ball into

Jabari let him get to some of his sweet spots when things do slow down I’m not saying that Jabari has to immediately become a number one or number two option overnight but just you know getting him the ball in some spots where he could be successful that’s all um Elsewhere for

The Rockets uh Fred Van bleet and Dylan Brooks rough nights for both of them uh fredman doing his job facilitating the basketball absolutely uh 11 assists only one turnover but three of 11 shooting only one of four from downtown and then Dylan Brooks a really rough one of seven

Shooting night 0 of five from three only played 23 minutes in this game uh a really really bad game from Dylan Brooks unfortunately he has his play after being absolutely Sensational for the first two or three months of this season has kind of leveled out and started to

Revert back a little bit and the shooting hasn’t been as great as of late um it’s unfortunate uh hopefully he doesn’t like completely turn back into a pumpkin and his Memphis Dylan Brook self and he can at least maintain some semblance of the the player that he was

Earlier this season but some of the bad fouls some of the turnovers some of the ill advised shot attempts they’re they’re creeping back up a little bit and need need Oka and need Fred Van vet to keep him in check because he needs to be the best version of himself for this

Rockets team to have a chance to make the play in tournament and hopefully if they do make some noise in the playing tournament uh later on this April but this this version of Dylan Brooks is is not good it’s not good for this Rockets team um and then we got to talk about

Jock landale and his presence Off the Bench 10 points three rebounds seven blocked shots at one point aurman and Holland were were wondering if if we would see a jock landale double double with points and blocks um I’m sure it’s been done before where it’s been a

Double double with points and blocks and not another stat like rebounds or assists or whatever um but I don’t have any I don’t have that stat pulled up in front of me so I do not officially know if it’s been done before or not but 10 points three rebounds seven uh seven

Block shots 20 minutes of run uh Jack was great defensively in this game and I think he was a bit of a a helpful tone Setter in this one especially there in the second half just helping to clean up some of the mistakes around the rim erasing some shots uh his presence and

His play as of late has been so needed by this Rockets team it couldn’t come at a better time obviously with the injury to alperin shenon there was a really big question mark how are the Rockets going to replace Alp how are they going to replace his production because nobody on

This team can do what Alber and shingon does but you can kind of piece together some of that production right so Jabari pardon me Jabari with his his rebounding numbers um am Min Thompson with his screening and rolling presence uh Fred Van vet really kind of getting

Back to uh his level of playmaking that he had earlier this season right the double digit assist numbers from him really steering the offense Jaylen green and his scoring load as of late the Rockets are really finding a way where where everybody is being tasked with

Kind of stepping up a little bit on this team to kind of make up for losing the guy who’s been their best player all season long and it’s working so loving what we’re seeing from jock landale and hopefully he keeps playing some really solid basketball because it’s going to

Actually put the rockets in a really interesting position this offseason where you’re going to have to decide like what do you do because now you’ve got a you know three-headed you know Monster at the center spot where you’ve got ALR Shon Jack landale and Steven Adams uh Health permitting and you’re

Not going to have minutes for all three of those guys so at some point this offseason the Rockets are going to have to probably entertain the idea of trading one of them now if I had to you know wager right now I’d say that it makes more sense keeping step Adams over

Jo landale because he’s more of a different type of backup big than jock landale is um but if Jo landale can play himself into like some positive trade value at the end of the season then that would be great for the Rocks because he’s on an incredibly Team friendly

Contract and then you know sometime this offseason maybe the Rockets can swing a deal for you know jock landale where they can get back an asset or two or maybe packageing with somebody else to make to bring back a a different type of role player maybe you know adding some

Help on the wings or backup guard spot or or something so it’s worth noting that his play is important to the actual production and you know to the winning of this team right now but also for the Rockets to potentially uh be able to make a deal sometime this off season as

Well so just things to consider moving forward but those are final thoughts from this game I want your thoughts on Jaylen Green’s insane offensive uh explosion am Min Thompson his 25.1 rebound performance let me know your thoughts in the YouTube comments but as always thank you so much for checking

  1. Jalen and Amen deserves all the praise but I want to give Jabari some credit.

He has been really good lately on both sides of the balls he been getting to his spots and he been shooting the ball really well.

I need Jabari to get more post up touches instead of Dillion Brooks because we all know that Jabari is damn near automatic when it comes to him shooting his middys.

But yeah that layup Jalen made was insane 😅

  2. We need to get Cam back on the floor! I doubt Cam complained about his knees. I think the medical staff went overboard and suggested a 3 week absent. I think whoever that medical staff is that made that decision, is a Sengun fanboy and did it to block Cam from showing the Rockets him and Green are the face of the franchise. Not Green and Sengun.

Cam was at the game and walking and standing just fine. He doesn’t look like he need 3 weeks off. I think it was deliberate decision to block Cam/Green from developing stronger chemistry to lead the Rockets. That medical staff that made this hateful decision need to be called out. We demand who the guy is??

  3. Jalen is more efficient because he isn't thinking about having to pass to Sengun, he just focuses on scoring. Jock rolls a lot but I don't think he even expects to get the ball often.

  4. I swear these dudes were trying to trade Jalen a month ago, my how times have changed. Guess you shouldn't be so quick to give up on a 22 year old smh.

  5. I told you months ago not to worry about Jalen Green he is basically a rookie who did not get better the last 3 years playing AAU style this is the 1st year with a legitimate NBA coach.

  6. I was in attendance yesterday, it was a good game from Jalen and got to meet Ryan Hollins. Love the Rockets!
