LIVE: Pistons vs. Pelicans Pregame w/ Willie Green 3/24/2024
E e e e e e good to be home yes absolutely absolutely um coach congrats right now you’re second in the NBA when it comes to large margins of Victories 20 points or more was that necessarily a goal or is that just the product of principles
Of play and and and what ended up working out no it’s not a it wasn’t a goal at all um the goal is to step on every floor every night and and try to be the best that we can and for zion an odd night for him uh last game what do
You do do you run more things for him to get him scoring more or when he’s facilitating and just being a point of gravity does that work just well for your squad no it’s it’s just about him settling into the game reading the game like he’s been doing he’ll be fine you
Know every now and then you have games like like he had the other night but you know tonight uh should be a good opportunity for him to bounce back all the time about players getting distracted when they go to their hometowns can head coaches get distracted when they go back home no
Like I’ve been doing this too long and be getting distracted um it’s really about coming in coming in and focusing on our standards and and holding ourselves to it but nah can can you talk about the job that Monty Williams has done dealing with the losing streak and
All the injuries and being able to hold it together and and and you go out and you watch them play and they play hard every night for sure m is um he like a brother to me um had an opportunity we me we played together my rookie season he coached me
In New Orleans we were coaching together I was under his leadership in Phoenix and um like you said his teams every night they go out and they compete as hard as they can and he he’s in a process now where you know he’s got a lot of young
Guys and they’re learning how to play they’re you you seen as the season progressed they’ve gotten better and um I think that that’s going to continue um you know throughout the summer they’re G they’re going to get together regroup and and continue to try to put
The best possible teams on the floor but he’s a great leader I learned a lot from him and I probably wouldn’t be where I am today without um going to Phoenix and and learning what it was like to uh build a program there a team that really
Likes to get out and and run transition defense is that going to be a key today for sure one of our top Keys is transition defense um have to try to make them score in a half court as much as possible well you obviously have other
Things to focus on but uh as you come back home what are your thoughts on the the status of your moer basketball program there their head coaching search yeah we you know we we we had a tough season this past year at University of Detroit um I know Mike Davis and um
You know prior to that you know he he he did a tremendous job but you know this year it just didn’t go go our way so same thing you know you you try to re-evaluate look at the program and see some things that you can do better what
Would you like to see happen there do you think from a head coaching standpoint you have any thoughts on no I keep those conversations more private but um you know we we want to we definitely want to be a school and University that um athletically can compete with any school
Uh and any other university and we haven’t done that this past season so that’s the goal is to try to put ourselves in that position you talked about the relationship with man he was saying earlier that his situation now kind of reminds him of of your situation
When you first started in New Orleans and a lot of the guys you started with they are no longer there what you learned about that that transition and how a team can overhaul a roster and then and get to the point to start winning again what what what does it
Take to kind of weather those storms and and eventually get back the right P yeah it takes just that it takes knowing how to weather the storm and um sometimes you guys know in life um it could be a new job it could be a new relationship
Um it could be a new opportunity and it didn’t always start off with with a bang sometimes you go through a bit of adversity um to figure out what do we have and where do we need to improve and I think that’s that’s the kind of stages
That they’re in you know we we had to do it in New Orleans and um from a leadership perspective you know you try to remain consistent and steady as possible um meanwhile looking at some of the positives and trying to enjoy the journey um because you know things will turn
Eventually all right thank you
