Joe Mazzulla on Celtics BLOWING 30 Point Lead vs Hawks | Postgame Interview

Joe Mazzulla on Celtics BLOWING 30 Point Lead vs Hawks | Postgame Interview

We had uh nine what seemed to be live ball turnovers for points you know and then they shot the ball really well from three so uh we got off to a really good start uh but it’s a good lesson you let a team hang around and uh you know they

Made you know those margin plays you know points off turnovers three-pointers offensive rebounds and uh credit to them for you know battling back what kind of learning experience is this for you guys what’s kind of the big you know takeaway you have from this I mean just it would

Be any game like just got to uh start quarters end quarters well and and execution and then the idea of uh putting teams away when you can you know but also you know there’s been that’s like 58 now at least but you know there’s 58 times it’s 20-point lead as

Either been tied uh or the other team has taken the lead so it’s a stuff like that’s going to happen we have to learn how to manage it continue to learn how to manage it we do by managing runs uh beginning quarter end of quarter uh and

Then the margins you know those things are the most important regardless of who you play Jo what happened to the offense in the second half seemed like these guys scored 44 points and scored 4 points in the first quarter yeah um well one I think we we shot like 40% from

Three in the first quarter so I thought we got some good looks uh that we missed uh but I thought their physicality uh you know they were extremely physical as soon as the ball got over half court I thought that messed up um just our offense and they made us work for

Everything so I thought they defended us pretty well and I thought we missed some some really good looks you know Payton Sam’s fee uh KP some of those guys so you know credit to them for their physicality tonight you start without a point guard kind of GT short of

And that works so well because you guys got every Cross Match you want in the first quarter then when they really turn things on the second half especially at the end of the game where there was a lot of just I possessions just kind of winding down what did you want to see

From them as far as putting some level of kind of point guard fluidity and Crea yeah I mean I think just handling the pressure handling the physicality um which I thought we did uh in the second quarter they changed the matchups uh and just went traditional and just decided

To just be more physical so I think just handling that is the the thing to learn there you know and then the last time you guys had this big of a comeback loss it was that Brooklyn game talk about and kind of similar thing with the you know

Shooting difference in the second half BRS back so I guess you look back on that game a couple years ago what kind of memories does that bring back having the same kind of loss had you guys I didn’t remember until you said it so I

Have to process it but uh I think it’s just you know playing through stuff like it goes back to just just games like that if you let guys hang around and they feel good about themselves their role players played really well Garrison Matthews uh I think it was three for

Three threes uh Bruno came in and changed the dynamic of the game so when you let guys hang around allow you know different role players to make high energy plays and uh no matter who you’re playing in the NBA once it gets close anything can happen you know so it’s

That space of uh you know just working through that you know what Jen Springer for stretches of the fourth quarter um what did you why did you want to put him out there and what did you see from him bring um you know he brings great physicality uh his ball pressure uh he

Got an IL legal screen he almost got a steal at half court uh got a layup and transition uh so just you know an opportunity for him to grow um his physicality his defensive presence psychologically how do you I mean I’m not a psychologist so I don’t know

But you have a lot of philosophy yeah um how do you stop obviously the run at the end of the first half know it was 18 it deflated was a great half and then they come out with 18 to four yeah what happens how do you you tell you guys

Don’t yeah they’re coming they’re coming they’re coming and I mean it’s just a it’s uh yeah I mean really the three-point that’s the weapon of the three-pointers so they shoot 50% from three changes everything in the game and we shot 28% so like you look at it you

Only have nine turnovers usually they don’t lead to 20 points we don’t usually have that many live ball ones right so it’s like a it’s a combination of a bunch of stuff it’s guarding the three-point line it’s making open shots it’s not having nine live ball you know

I don’t know how many were live ball but the ratio seems to be was probably most you know and then 15 offensive rebounds so I think it always comes down to that when we played them last year in the series it was those margins it was defending the three-point line it was

Limited in the one shot and I think we still outshot them uh so it’s a weird and uh you know so we just got to learn from that can improve yeah Pace maybe you kind of look at uh I mean around the league it’s all about the same I think it’s about making

Shots you got to get you got to fight through physicality you got to play through fouls you got to get to the free throw line and you got to make shots you know thank you Joe thank you

ATLANTA — After the Celtics squandered a 30-point lead against the Atlanta Hawks, resulting in a 120-118 loss, Head Coach Joe Mazzulla spoke postgame, reflecting on the match: “We got off to a really good start, but it’s a good lesson when you let a team hang around and, you know, they made, you know, those margin plays, you know, points off turnovers, three pointers, offensive rebounds and, credit to them for, you know, battling back.”

  1. Shouldn’t have blown that. Was scratching my head when they were playing mihauik and springer in the 3rd quarter. We missed having Derrick white and Holliday…those guys are some of our best defenders!

  2. Everybody can't play! No big deal, move on to the next one. Win Lose Or Tie Celtics till I Die! Go C's. 57 and 15😂

  3. Theres no excuse for a loss like this joe refused to call a timeout until they were by 3 tatum needs to learn how to be clutch and there late game execution severely needs to get better

  4. It's a TERRIBLE lesson at this point in the season and with these players.

The team should know how to manage runs at this point in the season.

    This CAN'T happen, Joe.

    It just can't.

  5. I swear this man is useless 😂: seriously at the end of games it looks like the Celtics don’t even have a coach. No structure just hoping talent finds a way to win them the game

  6. winning 1 close game like this is much more valuable than 5 blowouts because it helps you so much mentally when it inevitably happens in the playoffs too.

Closing out close games like this are the Celtics final "hump".

  7. It was going to happen at some point. Hauser was cold as ice, they played like hot garbage for two and a half quarters, lost by two. Not stressed. I thought they were going to pull it out, but Atlanta just plain old refused to give up. Only thing I was really out on is Point Tatum – he murders the pace, and the team was taking way too many shots late in the clock, without a matchup they wanted.

  8. It's hard to find negatives in a team that's 57-15, but 4th quarter possessions that have zero passes with either JT or JB dribbling for 15-20 seconds of the clock then left with nothing but a contested shot is one thing I'd like to see go away…

  9. Celtics have lost every game Joe has done the "no timeout, let them figure it out" crap. I figured this would be a loss between no White and Holiday, Hawks being undermanned, and Scal's obnoxious moneyline arrogance in the first half. Joe not calling a timeout to break up the run (and of course stupid Scal agreeing) is just foolishness, every time. He doesn't take these games seriously and C's get burned and lose. Another example of Tatum not being able to close out a game and be the best player on the court because he's got bad decision-making and mid playmaking ability.

  10. The game isn't over until the clock hits 0. When you think the game is over cause you up 30. Now they know, you can't relax.

  11. BUMS. The Celtics have done this time after time over the last 10 years or so. Go up by 30 to a team without it's star, and then get beat. BS

  12. I hate the fact that he’s keep saying oh, we will learn from this blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah blah, you’ve been saying that every time you blow a big lead, oh, we will learn from this blah, blah blah, well obviously you have not learned anything. Neither has your team and you won’t. You need to call these guys out embarrass them in public so that they get their crap together

  13. “He who influences the thought of his times, influences all the times that follow. He has made his impress on eternity.”

    — Hypatia

  14. We had to many easy games. We need games like this to show that Anyone can come back on you because they are NBA players. This will help us in the playoffs. It has happened to us a few times. This will be drilled in them and only make them better. Stop Bitching ( 1 Game)

  15. can everyone in the comments stop being so easy on this team and especially this coach? we are in a prime championship window and stuff like this is completely unacceptable and indicative of what’s to come in the playoffs, especially based on what we saw last season. if you expect a title, you need to hold this team AND ESPECIALLY THIS COACH accountable at every turn!

  16. Coming out of the half, the team was as slow as turtles. Not running plays, turnovers, poor shot selection. I'm happy they lost this one.

  17. I would have expected that they have already learned threir lesson from last years playoff -experience against the Hawks. But hey sometimes it takes longer for some players to get it and some players never get it.
    1. Brutal turnovers from KP
    2. late game execution – here go again -with a turnover from JT and a contested corner 3 from JB
    3. poor defensive rebounding, KP got dominated, rim protection nonexistent
    4. poor defending of the perimeter – that's something I expected with White and Holiday being sidelined
    5. abysmal 3PT shooting, Hauser had a rough night
    6. as good as Pritchard is offensively, Hawks exploited the Pritchard mismatch several times to score.

I am concerned. I have a pretty clear imagination what to expect from this team once playoff time comes.

  18. I love a lot of what Joe has done this year, not getting too high or too low, but it's frustrating that he doesn't take these losses seriously. This is why most of the media doesn't take this team seriously as a contender.

  19. This shouldn't be your time to learn!!! Your learning time is over! You should handle the situation and wake the players up when they are blowing the lead.

  20. Everybody looks at the 4th period when they lost it in the second. They got lazy and gave them hope….this is fatal for a championship team….giving hope is exactly what you are trying to take away from your opponent….this team does not have that mental quality that we associate with the great Celtic team that wins championships….I have seen them since the Bill Russell Celtics of the 60's. Giving up big leads with attitude just spurred the Hawks that can score and then they just fell apart. This is not just another game; it's an example of an attitude that is not championship bound.

  21. Joe Mazzulla another no adjustment in 2nd half & TATUM CHOKE AGAIN 😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😅😂😅😂😅😂😂

  22. Lets put it this way: Larry Bird would never have allowed the Celtics to lose that game. So JT can talk about being the best player but he and JB should watch tape of Larry and other great Celtics…..where is the effin pride?

  23. It’s not a big deal to me, But Muzzula will cost the Celtics the chip this year. Next year get a real coach!

  24. When you turn the ball over and don't make 3's your team is in trouble. If you don't make 3's then don't turn the ball over. Its ok not to make 3's it happens all the time, but to turn the ball over is unacceptable.
