POSTCAST – Victor Wembanyama and Spurs jump on the Utah Jazz early and hold on for win

We saw the future tonight it’s Victor webban Yama of the San Antonio Spurs for the Jazz it was a first quarter that they never recovered from we’re talking about it coming up on postcast you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of

The locked on podcast Network your team every Day Utah Jazz fall to the San Antonio Spurs 118 11 in a game that honestly just wasn’t that close the Jazz fell behind early uh they were trailed by F 14 at the half at the end of one they really only had one little time where they got it within

Four and then not until the final flurry when there was time was running out did they ever get it inside eight points in the second half so Ron David lock along with Ron Boon for postcast around that really the Spurs controlled this game throughout they really did after that

Great start they got off to in their first quarter Jazz just not could not scored I think it was like what three minutes on the clock Jazz only had eight points something like that yeah and and you know ended up you getting 15 but David if there’s

A upside to this they outscored them for the next three quarters y they they just was not able to recover and they you know uh well they they slowed down their pace of turnovers they were on Pace for 36 turnovers after the first quarter and they did not commit 36 turnovers

Thankfully but the turnovers early this the slow start will hardy took a timeout two and a half minutes in just not a lot of gumption early in this game and nine turnovers in that first quarter yeah anytime you’re turning the basketball over those are possessions and then if

They’re scoring on the other end and if I remember correctly in that first quarter they had six three-point field goals you know that that’s quite a bit for a quarter especially for the San Antonio Spurs uh this was a chance to see Victor web and Yama as he has

Evolved and grown throughout the years here the first one that jumps out to me same thing that jumped out to me when we saw him the first time same thing I’d say about Chad hren these guys just play hard like that’s the biggest thing to me

When I see him is how hard he plays yeah they run the floor both of them get up and down the floor they really run the floor I mean it’s not like they’re they’re coasting and and but you know they got long legs but they are sprinting and and they Sprint down the

Floor um both of them got handles they can you know just do so much for their height and awfully difficult to to to but you know Victor knows if he’s runs to the rim he’s going to get the basketball the question on both those two guy these two guys with they were so

Skinny and this and that but the amount of players that can take advantage of him yeah I I guess certainly I’m gonna guess that Joel embiid can take ad okay well that’s arguably the greatest player in the world like when he’s when Joel embiid has a good night like you maybe

Yic is better for a whole season but I think arguably you could say that embiid for a single all right like who else like sabonis we looked it up like Victor’s had a hard time with sabonis okay like there just aren’t that many guys that have been a that are out there

That can take advantage of what seems to be these two spinley rookies that are I think G to be dominating this league for the next 10 to 15 years what’s the age difference uh chatt and Victor well I’m just using that as an example of a

Player that is good and is talented as he skillful as he is um the upside of his game is picking up to the point where he can handle guys or take away some of the strength of of some of those guys that you mentioned but right now uh

The physicality of of those two guys especially embiid and and yis will would dominate all right just give me your Victor take like you watched him what do you think we’re seeing in the next five years what do you think we’re seeing in the next 10 years like what is this guy

G to do the league a little bit of everything we saw tonight except he will be a more efficient shooter I mean his his his offensive game shooting away from the basket is not that great I think he develop you can just tell he

Has a stroke and I think the more and as much as NBA teams shoot training shooting off the dribble all you know just so many different things I think he gets better better at that and if and if if he’s man a threat to the point where you you afraid

To back off of him he’s going to be so dominant it’s unbelievable uh he’ll be the best defensive player in the league well anytime you put him around the rim yes oh you know if he’s 15 fet defending if you’re defending him or if he’s defending you 15 feet away from the

Basket you’re not safe but if he’s out 20 somewhere in there and you get by him you know he’s he’s probably not going to to defend you but if he’s 15 to 10 feet away from the basket defending you he’s he’s the best in the league so he went

In the starting lineup in the middle of December yes averaged 22 points 11 rebounds four assists and four blocks a game since then yeah okay so that’s a career for some people and obviously he’ll have better teammates at some point in time I would assume correct but

Like four or five years from now what is he 30 points 15 rebounds seven blocks like what are we talking about here I I don’t know if we’re going to see that maybe David but I think 20 something points the ball game and those other numbers the impact that he makes on

Winning is probably what’s going to be I mean Luca you mention Luka all the time if Luca doesn’t score you know the way he scores he doesn’t have as much of an impact on a ball game right but this kid will you know even though you know he’s

Not scoring 30 G all right let’s go to Jazz since though Victor was really story Vel had 31 for the Spurs as well um Lowry plays 42 he did look banged up again at the end uh um 25 points we keep working that ISO to

Him he got fouled a bunch of times what what do you that’s what do you see in the isolation one-on-one game from L just continue to do continue to work on it I mean you don’t get better unless you’re in compe you can’t simulate those things in practice um unless you’re

Going one-on-one with with someone that can defend you but you got to keep doing those things in games and and in order to get better at it uh perfect time for him now Jazz are working very very hard uh to win basketball game and they’re working very very hard to make him that

Kind of a player so he has to play that way and and you know he’s going to turn it over sometimes I’d like to see him be a little bit smarter sometimes and and when you when you have a guy that’s six5 trying to defend you and keep you away

From the bass that doesn’t mean you have to beat him off the dribble and spin back to the middle of the floor or something like that uh when you can just take him and shoot over the top of me uh nine games left for the Jazz at this

Point we’ll be interesting to see if Lowry puts up 42 minutes again they really ran the minutes out tonight Keon played 39 Colin played 38 John Collins played Just 22 uh Hendricks played 33 so it was interesting but we really without Chris Dunn and without Jordan Clarkson

That bench got thin tonight yeah look th if you look at the minutes out there and then you look at the Players I mean you you got cah Lewis Potter uh Tuckers who doesn’t and you just I don’t know what you expect right you know so and it’s interesting I I

Feel like tail played the I mean he went deep early taon played four minutes in the first half but I don’t think played in the second half or year played I mean will was 11 deep in this game just trying to find somebody to play Early very upset with what happened in that

First quarter and then he got a couple of times he got upset because they were releasing and getting ahead of the defense and sometimes they had a three-on-one break or four-on-one break or something like that and so he gets mad and and you know he let a couple of players know it

When they came off the floor I mean this is what you have to do how do you keep these players engaged knowing that they’re not going to make the playoffs um but they want to try to finish as strong as you can how do you keep them

Engaged to the point where uh they’re busting their butt every night was really interesting Walker and will had a long interchange on the bench tonight but then Walker ended up finishing the game and playing more minutes than he has in a little while I think he played he played 22 tonight um

An old school way of of chewing a guy out and then giving him the basketball yeah chewing a guy out and then calling a play for him you know something something like that just to okay I chewed you out now but I still have confidence in you go out and get it done

All right so the Jazz lose to the Spurs there are not a lot of W’s left on this schedule the Jazz schedule the rest of the way is pretty seriously difficult I do not we are favored tonight by 2 and a half I think that’ll be the last time

We’re favored the rest of the year uh the Rockets won again tonight those those are we have two home games against them Friday and the next week we have Cleveland coming here Cleveland lost a bad game tonight I think I think they lost to Charlotte tonight um so

Cleveland’s kind of a um Clippers twice and the Golden State Warriors twice yeah and other scores that you might care about tonight just to update you um Atlanta was running away from Portland 120 106 and Brooklyn was nice enough to beat Washington tonight 122 119 so for

Those of you that are following that that uh relevant at this point we are now one loss behind the Brooklyn Nets um so just keep an eye on that as things go um Brooklyn is incentivized to win because of the fact that their pick goes to Houston anyway so maybe a chance

To Jazz end up in the eighth position in the draft who are your stars tonight Ron Boon well lri has to be lri that’s for sure I mean I thought he looked very good played very very hard there as well Colin seon would probably be the other

Um him and keante both I I was going back and forth with those two guys but Colin seon just has a way of of getting your attention you know out there on the floor didn’t turn it he turned it over three times here tonight and but both of

Those guys out of the 25 assists the Jazz have between the two of those uh keante and Colin seon 17 assists well that is uh nine assists by Colin uh jumps out to me um and a great note from a listener and I actually usually don’t

Miss this one but I wanted it’s a great way to close the show and I super appreciate um somebody who just uh threw this up on the uh from Drew Domin Damian who points out that today was the day hot passed uh nine years ago on March

27th so thank you very much to Drew for uh pointing that one out usually we Ron and I kind of remember that one uh we both I remember we were in Denver together and remember it unfortunately well um hard probably the hardest broadcast either you and I have ever

Done in our lives yeah the hardest part for me was when we went to see him uh and this is before he before pass away and that was that was the hardest part of seeing him in the condition that he was in you’re pretty unflappable yeah

Like I might have only once in your lifetime ever seen you uh unphased I would say that was the time so uh all right Drew thank you very much we appreciate that uh thanks all of you for being a part of our community joining us on each and every one of these games

Throughout the year obviously the end of the season has not been what we want from the wind column but uh let’s hope we all look back on this fondly and we really appreciate you guys spending these days with us uh afterwards this is locked on Jazz it’s part of the locked

  1. This is one gritty team they fight harder and hustle share the ball better than any team in jazz history I think they can win the title this year

  2. If you dont give Lauri the max,he won't resign, why would he. He will be traded. What you have left? A g league squad +collin sexton… Good luck to fill delta for next season…

  3. Officially out of playoff contention. I’m curious about what the off-season will look like. Who will we trade? Who will be drafted?
