Should the Detroit Pistons split up their backcourt?

Should the Detroit Pistons split up their backcourt?

Brother I could not have you on without talking about Jon iy I I talked about it with uh your TD Chris yeah for Woodward heavyweights we got into it so I want to know what’s your stance on Jaden Ivy but before you answer that this was your take

Pre-draft yeah with Spencer when you guys were doing podcast in the back at Woodward Sports this is what you had to say about Jaden iy before the draft and don’t get me wrong like this is starting to sound like I’m hating on the kid and I’m I’m really not I I truly

Believe jayen ivy can be like sweet in the NBA they can be a good player yeah as the man on his team yeah as the John Mor as the Westbrook when he was in OKC I’m saying like like I feel like he needs to be the guy in order to have

Success because other other than that like I he’s just not it’s not a winning formula look at the four teams in the Conference Finals right now which team mimics that play style none you know none of them that that’s like the like the James hard and Russell Westbrook

Rockets teams like that that’s you know that stuff doesn’t really get it done it’s it’s we saw it this year you know with LeBron and Westbrook where you got these two Bal dominant guys who aren’t the best shooters that it doesn’t work out like that and nobody is more

Athletic than Russell Westbrook you know and nobody is more explosive maybe not now but than Russell Westbrook you know he is that’s what he was known for that nuclear athleticism and it’s I I personally I I think we need a better shooter cuz that’s what this team was

Lacking this team was lacking Shooters yeah it’s we have sadik and you know Cade I I I hope Kate improves I think he will I mean you know he’s got the shot he’ll improve so that that was your take in 2022 I want to know what your stance on Jaden Ivy is

Now crazy that’s I was told that was a bad take was it like no looks like the exact thing I just I predicted did not I pulled the tape I went on your YouTube channel I I watched I think it was a two hour uh a podcast with you and Spencer

And those were legendary by the way um if those ever make it on the airwaves I think the FCC would probably cancel you guys but um yeah I you were right I I will admit it everything you said that you were getting hated for you were getting

Clowned on uh you were 100% right so I want to know what your stance is now with this Jaden Ivy stuff and fit with Kate Cunningham um it’s the same bro it really it really is I think I I think there’s like maybe uh a breath of Hope if we can get the

Shooting and that’s why when we first got fonio I was like yo like kinari could be the bench version of fono fono can you know start at four and like that’s something we can work with cuz if you stagger Kaden Ivy they both have that like shooter that could stretch the

Floor alongside them and then we let go of ginari I was like oh that’s that’s weird uh we let go mcow I’m like oh God this is not this is not going well um I think it’s going to run its course I think obviously they can play very exciting basketball together they’re

Both two very good basketball players I just don’t know that it’ll ever work in a winning formula Beyond a play in or something like that I I or maybe I mean maybe eight seed or something like that I just don’t they have to heavily stagger him

And have to get the right pieces around him and right now it feels like they’re just not gonna be able to do that they failed to do that I I I said this with Chris and said it with a lot of people that have been on here with with the fit with

Kade I think when you watch both Kate Cunningham and Jade and Ivy where they Thrive is ball in their hands yes and I not to say that Ivy cannot play the ball he had a game this year where he hit six threes and he had 30 points uh and when

The shots falling it can work but you look at his three-point percentage from February to March February he was shooting 43% from three and March he’s shooting sub 20% so I if the shots not falling it’s very glaring of the fit with those two

Um I like Ivy as a player you know I was very high on him coming out of the draft I know a lot of people were very zeroed on in on Chad hram and Paulo banero and I was like hold on you guys like Jay

Navy might be a player that we could get um I still like him as a player but I I think the organization has to have serious conversations this summer like can these two FIT um do we need to get another shooting guard next to Kate Cunningham I I think Kate Cunningham

Needs more of a movement shooter I think he needs more of like a Duncan Robinson um to an extent I think he needs a a shooting guard that yeah can score without the basketball in his hands that can just you know run off screens runoff

Picks whatever it may be um I think that would work long term and maybe you experiment with Jaden Ivy Off the Bench let him have the ball in his hands let him be that guy that is just a blur and transition let him you know initiate the

Offense as a league guard off your bench as a six-man role um because I I think with Cade and Ivy they both need the ball in their hands to be effective I’ve even seen this year where Monty is letting them split that 5050 um not to say that it can’t work I

Think it can but uh I think the Pistons have wasted too much time in this rebuild of trying to make it work um I think you you cannot go into next season and win less than 30 games in my opinion you just can’t rebuilds should not take five years

You have the talent you’ve been drafting in the top five you’re trading up for lottery picks like Jaylen durran like you have pieces in my opinion I think where you can compete now it’s time to evaluate this whole roster maybe you split up uh J maybe you trade Jaden iy

This summer maybe you trade one of the core for I don’t know but I I think fitwise I don’t know if Jaden Ivy’s gonna have the luxury of being the starting two guard to Kate Cunningham next season because I think there’s a lot of pressure on Troy Weaver and the

Pistons front office this summer to make some big moves yeah man I think it sucks too because he’s I I I truly like the kid I I really do um I feel bad that if he if he has heard anything I know one time I I met his mother and that wasn’t

Received well so I know she must have heard some things you know and uh because I don’t dislike him I respect the hell lot of him and his past and just even want to come and play for my team the Detroit Pistons we we don’t see

That often like when Kate thr on the Buffs and like oh you know gave all the shouts out to Detroit like we love that like Ivy literally shed tears because like this is where he wanted to be I remember they asked him in the airport he’s he’s Indiana’s like Prodigy son too

At that point too you know his mom whatever but I I I love what he’s done I guess who he is as a person and I and I appreciate him who he is as a player it’s just I don’t think he’s a fit for a winning formula for my team right

Now and and I think that like if the value’s up I mean I don’t know that it is right now I think you should yeah I think you should make a move for a piece that fits not not a pick not future picks give me piece that fits and that’s

Tough though too because I remember having a conversation with I’m I’m ramming at this point I apologize I remember having a conversation I think it was my guy Sammy and he’s like you know you never see it where stars get traded and it’s like an even trade

Usually it’s just a star getting traded it’s a bunch of [ __ ] or bunch of picks and a couple okay players going the other way like that’s true but yeah that’s what we got to do I got we we got to do it I think Kade can work that way

We went to the Western Conference Finals outside Jen Brunson that’s what it was kind of like okay guys but they could stretch the floor play defense and shoot the three yeah I I said it with um Piston’s thoughts last week Kade Cunningham to me is one of the easiest players in the NBA

To build around yes because he’s so versatile he can play arguably three positions pass shoot defend um he needs a bunch of three and D wings like you you had mentioned a little while ago um I think if you I I just thought of a trade and this isn’t a recent trade by

Any means but Pistons had Jerry stack house during the Grand Hill era Jerry stack house was stand there 30 points per game and they trade for a guy of I don’t know Richard Hamilton which people were kind of pissed off about when they traded Jerry tack house because Jerry

Was getting buckets um I’m not saying that you know you you trade Jade Navy right now and you’re gonna get like a Richard Hamilton type player or get a player of that caliber but I will say Jaden Ivy’s Peak value right now is I bet you it’s pretty high I’m not saying

It’s going to get you a superstar player by any means but I think you could at least get a veteran starter in the NBA that whether it’s a shooting guard whether maybe you want to upgrade that Center position because I love Jaylen Duran but defensively this year it just

Has not been there at all he was a lot more dominant his rookie year I I don’t know what happened I don’t know why uh the progression the defensively isn’t there but um I think Jade n can get you something in a trade I really do you

Could pack as your pick this year and a maybe a 2029 you know future pick um to get something you really could um I’d much rather him stay I I really would if you want to have him off that bench roll have him in that six-man roll I I would

Be fine with that because that way he doesn’t have to share the ball with K Cunningham he can just run that second unit to do that though because he is good like he can be really good uh yeah it’s a sticky situation I mean I

Guess the one bail out you could try to do is really just make the commitment to like grabbing the pieces that fit around those guys and that’s so stretched Shooters you know but you gota make that commitment I know they grabbed buan I know they grabbed Burks but those are

Guards you force them to play small forward if you wanted to like they weren’t that wasn’t their natural fits you know sometimes you’re asking Buon to to guard bigman because like how you just you want to get him on the floor and it’s not going to not going to work

That way D has been uh kind of disappointing defensively but I think if you grab those pieces the shooters he’s still a piece you want because you can grab those boards and give you those second opportunities I’m saying and and he he passed the ball pretty well for a big man too yeah

So I I think that it was hard for me to actually uh put my B asde be like you know what EAS was right he was getting dogged on I remember pissing slitter dogging on you like crazy as you you were really high on benedi Ma and Jadon

Sharp you know coming out of the draft um but I think there’s a place for Ivy I just don’t know how those two can really coexist trying to share share the ball basically because they both need the ball in their hands to be Comfort to not even just to effective but to be

Comfortable playing because there are times where you know Kate standing in the corner he does not look comfortable Jaden Ivy’s just standing in the corner he just he’s just like this waiting for the ball like I think he would be way more engaged if the ball was in his hands [Applause] Nonstop Yeah

This week on Pistons Talk Podcast, Anthony was joined by Speak Eazy from Woodward Heavyweights. The topic of discussion was the fit of Jaden Ivey next to Cade Cunningham and if Eazy opinion has changed since his pre draft evaluation of Jaden Ivey in the summer of 2022.

  1. Get on the Phone with Miami Heat Ask for Herro and Duncan Robinson. Now Piston fans will have to be prepared to deal with Ivey in the Miami Heat Culture. He will be a All Star. But the Pistons will be the better team over time.

  2. I don't like Cade at the point guard position. He slows down the offense which is not good for a young team who can't shoot and relies on athleticism. His dribbling skills also need a lot of work. He dribbles the ball way too high and too far out in front of him. I would like to see him slide over to the shooting guard spot or small forward depending on matchups. This should pick up the pace, open up spacing and decrease the turnovers. IMO

  3. Over the course of their careers, I believe Ivey will end up being a better player than Cade. It won't happen in Detroit because of the mancrushes on Cunningham. Once he's out of here and in a NBA professional environment, he will grow to be a good talent on the floor.

  4. Troy Weaver failed in building around Cade. The philosophy is a total failure pairing a Russell Westbrook type in Ivey with Cade. Mathurain would of been a better fit, wing type shooter. Still hope in Ausar and Duren, but they can't shoot either. And why we draft Sasser, small gd, when at the time we had Monte Morris, Killian and Ivey?…. So draft another guard!??? Idiots in mgt. GG Jackson is a steal for Memphis, 6'9 shooter who has promise on defense. Would of been a nice fit with Cade, but nobody doing their homework in this organization. Can NOT trust these guys drafting moving fwd. We probably will draft another gd or Alex Sarr, who will be redundant to Duren.
