The Dallas Mavericks have PERFECTED this common NBA play

By Tim Hardaway this is like sort of just like a brush but look how open the rim Runner is on the first screen you could have thrown that up if you wanted to but instead you run this through Hardway comes around gets his feet set

And if you’re G to trail that screen to the top when the pass is being made from the wing you’re always going to be late on that which is exactly what happens There What is up everybody and welcome to what makes this play great where we break down one of the plays in the NBA Playbook and show you some of the details you might have missed today we’re looking at a very common action run by almost every team in the NBA to

Get their Shooters open and today we’re looking at it from the uh Dallas Mavericks and for them they’re running this play oftentimes for Tim Hardway Jr let’s get a look at it first thing you’re going to see is the point guard coming across the top off of a double

High screen open up the paint you got one shooter in each corner you see the one shooter is kind of up on the elbow a little bit and so then after that you get this what can be a back screen or a pin down you can run it both ways and

Then a secondary screen for the shooter to come off of receive the pass and go into their jump shot one of the things I like about it is you open up the paint so you you finish with Shooters in each Corner three players at the top of the

Key so you have all this space for the defense to cover which allows if you pull the defender out the rim protector out to guard the shot you have an open paint to die and go for the offensive rebound legs what do you see here so many things I love this obviously I

Would have loved this action when I played if if to run a set like this and you know the initial ball screen is sort of token you’re not really trying to get anything out of that like you’re not trying to turn the corner in this case it’s Dante xam running this isn’t Luca

Maybe Luca sees something different and pulls that shot exm just gonna run token action and then on the weak side you know like you said Adam the KE is it could either be a back screen or a down screen and I think you’re going to mix

That up the reason it’s such a threat on the second screen is because of the threat that you have set a back screen on the first one and there’s someone running free to the rim as you can see right here that wasn’t even a legitimate backst stream by Tim Hardaway this is

Like sort of just like a brush but look how open the rim Runner is on the first screen you could have thrown that up if you wanted to but instead you run this through Hardway comes around gets his feet set and if you’re going to trail

That screen to the top when the p is being made from the wing you’re always going to be laate on that which is exactly what happens there I like this one because it’s simple um you know it’s a pretty easy action to run but also because and you know this when you’re

Running plays for your shooter it’s nice for your shooter to know they have the green light like you’re coming off and if you’re even have a little bit of daylight you’re going up with this one so it makes it easy and and I’m want to

Say Adam in each of these cases and this isn’t I’m not trying to you know make an indictment or nitpick the defense there’s mistakes made on each of these defens and that’s the whole point of running complex action like this where there’s multiple things going on at the same time because you’re forcing

Communication and the more you force communication the more likely eventually there will be a breakdown in the communication and that’s what happens literally in each one of these sets with the exception maybe of the two where the defender chases over the top and and it turns into a little curl where you’re

Shooting something inside the three-point line which is going to be the option for the shooter to read that so I love the the initial part of this and and just occupying those two big guys when those two initial screens are being set you’re giving them something

To think about knowing it’s a Decoy for the action that’s coming next one of the teams that runs this best unsurprisingly has been the Golden State Warriors over the year because who has more gravity on a back screen than Steph Curry so you’re going to see the same action here they

Run it they actually use the screen uh often times so you’re using Steph Curry as a back screener here that’s obviously going to create a lot of gravity because you know Steph is coming off that screen the screener action and then nobody better in the NBA if you just get the

Tiniest little bit of daylight they’ve also run this one with Jordan P this is obviously from uh from last season but you’re gonna see same thing they set the screen here and it creates the opening for that back cut you were talking about yeah so that one it almost looks like

They they do this as a mandate to set the back screen and I love it because as a shooter I can tell you there is no better way to guarantee getting open other than setting a back screen because what happens is typically a lot of times

One one of two things are going to happen the guy that’s guarding you in this case Steph Curry the guy that’s guarding Curry is so worried about Curry then coming off of a screen that you’re not gonna bump the first guy going to the rim like in this case I think it’s

Gary payt you’re not going to bump that so because you’re worried about staying connected to the shooter and if that’s the case you’ve got you know your best passer and Draymond Green coming off that’s that could be an easy lob play in this case they switched it right and

When you switch it a lot of times what happens the switch is late because I think this was a late call by Jimmy Butler and that’s why you’re gonna see Caleb Martin ends up just completely trailing this play because the call is made late and then it’s a nice little

Cleanup screen on the second part of that and here comes Curry off the top with a full head of steam getting the basketball there’s a number of things he can do out of this right there he can shoot a 28f footer off the catch he could have curled that in or he could

Just pull it out and rerun ball screen with a different matchup that’s the other option at the end of this and what I like about it here is Caleb Martin has to go from a switch to a p to a off ball screen in half a second and it’s boom

Boom play so those are the types of things that you set up here even if you do get the switch the switcher is constant is is immediately in ball screen action so it’s a common one you can look for it Dallas Mavericks love love to run it for Tim Hardaway Jr and

Get him going look for it for your favorite team this was what makes play great we’ll see you guys next Time All

Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have run this play, Double Fist, just a few times all season. Are they saving it for the NBA playoffs? Tim Legler and Adam Mares break it all down in a new series we’re calling WHAT MAKES THIS PLAY GREAT. Check out the Xs and Os

  1. Seeing dwight powell and markief morris in that Line up shows how bad this team was because of injuries lol. Exum, THJ, Powell, Morris and DJJ in the court? 😂

  2. If theres a NBA analyst that i would believe to, it would be Legler. He can explain base on facts and science. Unlike those other so called veterans like Perkins, smith etc..
