An episode drops you know who else dropped fre recently the Milwaukee Bucks the Milwaukee Bucks got dropped by the Memphis Grizzlies and I can hear some of the sayings now some of oh they weren’t in full strength oh where’s Damian Lillard there’s no Dame time right now

How are the Bucks supposed to win Cry Me a freaking River you’re complaining to the wrong podcast host friend all right I have been covering this team not just over the last 11 years but this particular particular season I have been covering with demichel Cole here on lockon Grizzlies if you’re an everyday

You know the trials and tribulations it’s been like four NBA Seasons wrapped up into one evil little package right we have endured sir or Madam who is questioning whether or not this win should be valid oh it’s the second night of a backto back again like part or like

Minority owner Justin Timberlake says Cry Me a River Man Cry Me a River the Memphis Grizzlies found a way to win and as has often been the case this year one of the main ways that they found that way to win was behind the efforts

Of jiren Jackson Jr who dare I say I’m I’m gonna again we talked about this being a hot take kind of episode jiren Jackson Jr 35 points four assists three rebounds four stocks three of them being steals Giannis ano 21 points eight assists seven rebounds five blocks one

Steel I’m not going to say that jiren outplayed Giannis because I don’t know that that’s necessarily Fair watching the game but jiren was more efficient than Giannis that was a very fair thing to say jiren didn’t have the impact in terms of blocks that Giannis had but again the scoring giannis’s 21 points

Were on 23 shots jiren had 35 points on 26 shots so while I am doing my best to be a fair host if this is your first time coming through to lock on Grizzly you’re like oh let’s check out how this how this shows do it right they winning

NBA team for once right it’s been rare this year but let’s check it out I’m trying to be impartial right but again this is locked on Grizzlies and I am partial to what jiren Jackson Jr has had to deal with this season so yeah Damien Lillard wasn’t on the floor for the

Bucks and obviously that plays a major role in who Milwaukee is trying to be and yeah Jay Crowder if you have followed my career at all you know how I feel about Jay Crowder certainly is not up there with the likes of Chris Middleton who did not play in this game

The Bucks were not at full strength but the Memphis Grizzlies have been at full strength for what zero games this season because even when John Morant and Marcus Smart and Desmond Bane were out on the floor with jiren Jackson Jr there was still no Brandon Clark and this game was

Another reminder of just how important Brandon Clark is to this Memphis Grizzlies basketball team goodness gracious 20 minutes off the bench still playing within that minutes restriction esque situation for him 14 points seven rebounds three assists for Brandon Clark moving the basketball effectively he’s not a threat on the perimeter but we

Already knew that he is an excellent finisher at and around the rim he’s able to get to his spots he understands leverage he gets his game and he fits it nicely around and alongside the other Grizzlies which is really good to see and if you are someone who is a truther

For jiren Jackson Jr as the starting center which that’ll be a topic that I’m sure Michael and I will talk about ad nauseum as the season ends and the offseason NBA draft free agency all that fun stuff that hopefully you’ll stick around for with us here at lockon

Grizzlies if you are a truther for jiren Jackson Jr and Brandon Clark as your starting front court next year it makes me excited thinking about it because of their versatility because of what jiren has become offensively again jiren was 14 of 26 he only took seven threes he only took seven threes

Only made two of them so that means he was 12 of 19 on two-point attempts that’s extremely efficient only two personal fouls in 37 minutes played that is a huge jump for him an amazing sign of growth he had a great game and he did it in a game where luk Canard didn’t

Have it right he was not offensively there four assists helps with Luke he did it in a game where GG Jackson particularly strong as a scorer not so strong in other areas of his game which we’ll talk more about later on in the show when I officially launch my GG Jackson Sixth Man

Campaign that’s happening on this episode that’s another one of my hot takes coming up down the down the road but jiren does it without the guys that should be helping at least in terms of Canard and he does it in spurts with the likes of Lamar Stevens Jake laravia

Jordan Goodwin by his side again Memphis rolls out a ninan rotation Santi Al dama a late scratch for the Grizzlies so jiren again trying to be unbiased jiren at times maybe this is the fairest way to say it look like the best player on the floor for the Memphis

Grizzlies in this game at times and maybe there were a lot of those times and Giannis Anu Kumo played the Bucks falling to this Memphis team is maybe a surprise but you got to remember it is the second night of a back-to-back for them and you have to

Look at the game and actually watch it right if you’re just box score watching you’re not going to fully see what happened the Grizzlies are still a top 10ish defense in the NBA maybe top 12 and they have a lot of individual dudes that can defend and if your

Milwaukee in your offense especially in key moments of the game is going to go through basically two guys Giannis again 21 points he was a major contributor for them and Brook Lopez who had 25 points Bobby poris had 19 Off the Bench but other than those guys no one I mean

Malik Beasley scored 10 three of 10 shooting the offense for Milwaukee was fairly predictable and because of that predictability the Memphis Grizzlies have enough in the tank defensively that they can limit guys again Giannis did not have an efficient outing and if you’re not going to have Giannis scoring at a rate that

Is conducive to winning without Damen Lillard and Chris Middleton it doesn’t matter what Brook Lopez does Lopez had a great night for Milwaukee poris was impressive but if you have jiren doing what jiren did and you have GG Jackson scoring effect and you have Clark coming off the bench being a really impressive

Player again it’s going to be hard for Milwaukee to even with Giannis find a way to win that game so the Grizzlies had wonderful defensive plans they neutralized Giannis as an efficient scorer and they allowed other guys to beat them and they found lanes and opportunities around that Milwaukee did

Not have the juice throughout the contest uh Memphis was especially in the fourth quarter maybe you chalk it up to tired legs if you want but again the Grizzlies played some guys that are not going to be part of this roster next season so there has to be some Balancing

Act in terms of yeah the Bucks are probably tired but at the same time the Grizzlies have been through some stuff this year and are nowhere near what they will be in the future and I look forward to talking about that more on future episodes of lockdown Grizzlies but

Have my notifications on for woe and it pops up on my device and the first four words are Memphis Grizzly Star jaw my heart sinks and maybe that’s PTSD from what we’ve endured over the last 14 or so months maybe it’s unrealistic to just constantly assume

The worst about stuff but that’s kind of where I am after this season and let me know in the comments if you’re with me right like that that would make me feel really good if I know I’m not alone in that fear when I saw that that pop up

And oh my God I got to read this the rest of the post or tweet whatever was not as bad right Memphis Grizzly starred John Morant and his longtime agent Jim Tanner have parted ways sources tell ESPN Tanner had represented Morant since coming out of Murray State as the number

Two overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft now it’s bad for Tanner right because John Morant is one of the bigger stars in the NBA obviously he’s had a pretty rough calendar year and then some u a little more than that now and maybe jaw’s just looking for a fresh start

Right maybe he wants to find new represent ation as he embarks on a comeback season next year between the suspension the injury he’s looking to 2024 2025 as a chance to begin a new the metamorphosis of John Morant is coming and maybe he feels like he can’t do that

With the current representation there’s lots of different logical arguments for making this change players do it all the time again my stomach dropped and I’m G to sound hypocritical because I’m going to kind of judge people for doing something similar but you’d be amazed on social media it wasn’t a ton of people

But it was a larger amount than it should have been of folks just immediately assuming the worst jaw’s asking for a trade he’s gonna want out of Memphis he’s gonna be represented by CAA or clutch and he’s gonna try to get to New York or Los Angeles or a bigger

Market this is a nightmare this is the worst case scenario take a breath calm down have you ever thought for one moment that maybe it’s the opposite maybe jaw is going to add represent ation that has a larger reach and through those back channels maybe convince guys that playing with

Him with the Memphis Grizzlies might be kind of a good idea it doesn’t all have to be Doom and Gloom and jaw just recently signed a pretty large extension that’s going to keep him in Memphis for the better part of a decade barring some falling apart of the relationship of

Which there’s been no reports the Grizzlies every time they talked about morance have been supportive jaw has been supportive of memph and the organization overall you know aside from rumor and speculation anytime actual words have come out of actual people’s mouths that you’ve witnessed and Reporting has backed it up

As well they are on the same page as best they can be after a tumultuous year and they’re ready to move forward so this could very easily be a positive thing for the Memphis Grizzlies and I think that part of it as someone that has covered this team for a really long

Podcasting over at grizzly bear Blues back in the day generational fandom is so significant it’s the reason that I’m a Washington commanders fan even though they are an abysmal franchise hopefully things are turning around but until a year or so ago they were the worst franchise in sports or at least had the

Worst owner in sports and you could have easily said Joe just pick a different team support someone else and that’s easier said than done when one of your greatest childhood memories is watching Washington then Redskins games with your father and your grandfather or talking with another grandfather on his fishing boat about

Those games generational fandom is very much a thing and GR grind was their first opportunity Memphis had had success in the regular season made the playoffs that sort of stuff grit and grind was something that you could syn your teeth into and tell your kids about tell younger Generations about

That didn’t get a chance to experience it in a positive way and that meant a lot to folks myself included I was fortunate enough to live it they are the three years I lived in Memphis Tennessee and to be part of that and to know that you know because of the Market

Size all the other factors that play into it there’s always when there’s expansion talks teams moving the Grizzlies are going to be brought up jaw in this era of Grizzlies basketball should silence that the economic impact the ability for Morant to have been that future face of the

League you know they try to make Anthony Edwards it now and SGA and Oklahoma City because of the issues that Jaws had but johnar was very much on that trajectory and he did it all well m the Memphis Grizzlies so the investment that the state of Tennessee is making in the building

FedEx form over $500 million for improvements all that stuff is coming and the Grizzlies are not going anywhere for a variety of reasons but stuff like this can still bring back those feelings and again I’m not trying to belittle that but we’re at a stage now with what

Memphis has become and what the Grizzlies have become to Memphis over 20 years in to the franchise being in the city then I think that we can look at it from the positive spin we don’t have to go to that dark place immediately I I still do when I see W notifications

About jaw tweets and that’s something that I need to work through right but as a group hopefully we can agree that the Grizzlies are at a place now where okay maybe this is a chance for jaw to expand his reach and maybe find some additional connections that could help the

Grizzlies as opposed to trying to get them out of Memphis just a thought so it’ll be interesting to watch that play out I’m not going to pretend like I have any insight or information I will ask to Michael on tomorrow’s episode if he has anything because he would actually be

The guy that would have a little bit more insight on that but for me as a blogger blog boy podcaster fan let’s take a breath right it’s G to be okay let’s see where it goes don’t automatically go to that dark place that that that’s how I’m going to approach it

Maybe it hurts Lottery standing a little bit but at the same time it’s nice to see jiren Jackson Jr play so well it’s wonderful to see Brandon Clark coming off of a serious injury looking like the Brandon Clark of old and the Memphis Grizzlies were rewarded back in 2018

2019 they didn’t tank they had like a 4% chance to move up to the second overall pick and now John morant’s a member of the Memphis Grizzlies so the rest is history as they say that was fun to talk about we also talked about ja getting a

New agent or preparing to get a new agent saying goodbye to his old one trying to be positive I know it’s easy to go to that you know depressed oh gosh what’s this mean is John happy let’s see how it goes let’s see how it plays out

It could be a good thing for the Grizzlies and they’re probably not going anywhere almost certainly aren’t going anywhere anytime soon as the state of Tennessee invests in FedEx form and updates to it but to close out Today’s show I want to take a little bit of time

Officially putting my name whatever it’s worth Joe Mullen stamp of approval on GG Jackson as a reserve next year and I know this is going to bring some IR because they finally have a 6′ n Wing and you don’t want to start them that doesn’t make sense that’s what

Somebody’s gonna say and I understand your perspective here’s why GG Jackson for all of his impressive scoring that he’s done and we’ve talked about this a lot here on lock dun Grizzly so I’m not going to belabor the fact too much but just in the Milwaukee Bucks game 37 minutes played GG Jackson

15 points on 12 shots solid GG Jackson 12 rebounds hello beautiful right and we’ve talked about GG potentially being more of a fourward than than a three long term as a combo forward as a a sixthman type that could be attractive that could be fun right one

Assist one assist for GG Jackson in 37 minutes played the sample size has grown attempts are being made I got posted or tweeted at on X at least he tried to get the assist it’s happening he’s trying to grow but he’s not there yet yet and I

Think that that is going to be my overwhelming argument because I’m sure Michel and I will talk about it more when I look at GG Jackson I see a young man who at the age of 20 next season is going to be a contributor for

A team that is trying to win an NBA championship or at least be in contention for an NBA championship and that is a tremendous compliment that doesn’t happen consistently that makes him special and we are in this society that we currently live in so ingrained with the idea of instant

Gratification and wanting guys to be things immediately that I think that we lose sight of the long-term picture and the importance in basketball of starting while it does matter I think people write it off a little too easily to be honest who closes games and who you play with

In terms of the minutes you get matters far more so well I would not argue for GG Jackson next season to play 36 minutes a game I think he’s gonna get 20 to 25 minutes a game and in that role being a reserve coming off the bench and

Playing alongside the likes of a Marcus Smart and one of John Morant Desmond Bane jiren Jackson Jr so you spread out the offensive impact because to be honest with you if you’re starting John Morant Desmond Bane and jiren Jackson Jr do you really need GG to be that bucket getter as your

Fourth option for me the answer is no do you need GG Jackson to be your second option in a pseudo hybrid Reserve lineup that includes something like John Morant Marcus Smart GG Jackson Brandon Clark and insert big they acquire whether it’s somebody they draft like Donovan kinging or somebody they sign

Like an Andre Drummond or trade for like a Nick Richards there’s options we’ve talked about that and we’re going to continue to talk about that but in the lineup the hypothetical one that I just listed who’s the number two option it’s gigg Jackson is that better use of him

Going into his year 20 as a human being being alive season his second year in the league being a de facto sixthman bucket getter Off the Bench that doesn’t belittle the growth that gig’s had and it doesn’t negate the reality that he still has more growing to do should GG Jackson play Summer

League absolutely 100% he should play Summer League I hope he does and I hope he gets the chance to do what Desmond Bane did several years ago what zire Williams did a couple of seasons ago go and be the primary facilitator the best way to grow

Is to do the best way to learn is to make mistakes find ways to grow from them and get better from them I hope he gets that opportunity this coming summer I think he will so there’s still so much room for him to grow and improve and get better

But as I’ve said before and I will continue to say are you trying to contend for a championship or not GG Jackson is not where he needs to be as a creator of offense for others to be in a lineup consistently that includes John Morant Des Bane Jaren Jackson

Jr now 30 seconds left in the game would I rather have and you’re on offense would I rather have GG Jackson out there than Marcus Smart or Vince Williams Jr alongside those three probably because if things break down and you need a bucket we know that GG can do

That so he still make close games and he’s still gonna have a large role as a 20year old on a team that is trying to compete for a championship but this is me officially putting my flag in the ground GG’s going to keep getting better he’ll eventually be a starter maybe he

Could be the starting four long term maybe he is that big Wing that we’ve been looking for as a starter Beyond next season but going into such a pivotal year I think it’s in the best interest of giigi but most importantly it’s in the best interest of the Memphis

Grizzlies to have him be a sixthman type scoring Off the Bench that’s my official take I always reserve room for fangling it a little bit but I’m pretty consistent usually don’t flip-flop that’s my stance let me know what you think about it do you agree disagree

That I make a good argument do you think I left something out let’s talk it out in the comments by all means okay and I’ll ask to Michael about this on tomorrow’s show we won’t have a whole segment because again hopefully you’re in every day or by now and you don’t
