Boston Celtics-Miami Heat Game 2 preview: Physicality & 3-point shooting

The Celtics and Heat face off in Game 2 on Wednesday night, and it a weird way, the Caleb Martin play on Jayson Tatum might end up playing out in Boston’s favor. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal explains why, and then gets into why Joe Mazzulla is more concerned about his team just doing what they did all over again. Plus, Erik Spoelstra acknowledges his team needs to shoot more 3-pointers, but are they capable of shooting enough to make a difference? What kind of defensive trick might they try to slow Boston’s shooting down?

  1. Lemme guess they ducked this podcast too jk😂 John you had me cracking up at the people on Twitter (X) crying on why you (a reporter) updated that Tatum was available and healthy

  2. Fck the Heat and their lame ass “fans”. I want to sweep these pr1cks badly. Thanks John!☘️🔒

  3. One last comment about the foul. If it happened in the 3rd quarter I would have ZERO problem with it. A minute left down 16? Weak sauce.

  4. Sure. I have no issue with the physicality either, so long as no one's injured as a result. After the next win, it will be time for all the Heat mooks (who think THEY have something to do with their team's fortunes) to start citing the past as a way to equivocate the present.

  5. I’d like to shoutout a comment by @Goodshit I saw on Locked on Heat just now: “This ain’t last year’s Celtics. Y’all are FUCKED!”

  6. Maybe because of how Tatum immediately got up. If he stayed down and grimacing in pain for a couple minutes then i believe it would have been a flagrant 1

  7. Boston failure every year is my happiness. I'm so happy seeing them lose every year. I'm rooting for Denver, Lakers, Bucks, and Clippers to win the title if Miami loss the series. Its nice to see Boston loss every year despite getting a talent every year. My dream is to see Tatum and BRown with zero titles on their career with Boston not having a ring for the next 50 years. <3 #HeatNation #LakersNation

  8. John, you hit the nail on the head when you said that it's hard for NBA players to "…completely change the way they play, like on PlayStation…" That's EXACTLY why I've been saying they can't finish at the rim, as they were doing in the first half of Game 1 against Miami.

I think that the Celtics are having a hard time finishing at the rim, simply because they've been shooting so many 3s, that they're just not good at it.

So, if that's the case, then that's an area they need to work on at practice and in games.

  9. All Celtic fans must now celebrate, Heat is DEAD. They can never rebound and regain their strength in Game, 2, 3 and 4. Its all yours. Your next enemy is NY KNICKS. but they are just another WEAKLINGS. Finals has been decided. Its Celtics vs Denver. And Denver will win another Championship.

  10. Unusual logical lapse imo on the foul. Consider someone drives at almost twice the legal limit and gets in a car accident.
No one gets hurt. Is that just no big deal. No intent to hurt and who cares because it worked out ok ? What would you say if serous injury resulted ?
What would you say if Tatum was out for a year. That was a realistic possibility and it made no sense. Getting the rebound was near impossible and completely irrelevant to any potential outcome.

So I think you and your peers would scream if Tatum got seriously injured and rightfully so. It’s not outcome based. The play was just as reckless and pointless. That should be the honest context not that well gee whiz it turned out ok. I am sure you appreciate this and it’s easy to just move on and say he didn’t mean it — that’s not relevant. It was reckless and dangerous.

Thanks as always for your great work.

  11. How are we still talking about the Martin thing? Did no one see the replay he was pushed by Jrue which gve him more momentum. Chill it’s not tht deep

  12. 5 takeaways from game 1 leading into game 2:

    1. Bam is a dirty player and a master of illegal screens.

    2. Caleb's foul on JT was reckless which is still not good. if it happens again in game 2, if any heat player even comes close to the line, i'm going to call intentional and dirty.

    3. the C's solved the heat zone. it was methodical yes, but it helped alot that the celtics were making their 3s. the results could've been different if they had a bad shooting night. another good shooting night is needed in game 2.

    4. the heat (example here is Jacquez) were clearly jumping the passing lanes on JTs 1st pass out of the double. thankfully they were either a step too slow or JT was a tick faster. this needs to continue in game 2 so we avoid turnovers.

    5. expect the heat to double the Js but not a hard double. it was clear JT was beating them on hard doubles. they will show, they will stunt, they will dig. JT has to be patient and take care of his dribble.
