What did we learn about Jamal Murray and the Denver Nuggets in round one?

Jamal Murray dropped two game winners in a series that he struggled. Nikola Jokic was “passive” against the most aggressive double team scheme he’s ever seen in a playoff. Michael Porter Jr. had his best series as a Nugget. So what did we learn about them and their ceiling going forward? The DNVR Nuggets podcast team discusses that and provides early takes on the matchup with Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

  1. Champions dont need free throws and small market teams have to be very very good to beat big market teams to offset the agenda of league .

  2. Anthony Edwards seems like the type who wants to prove a point. He knows Jokic is the best and will do everything to prove he is better. He also loves intimidation and mind games. Got to put him in his place 💪💪

  3. 1) Nuggets have the best player in the series.

    2) Timberwolves not having their coach readily available could be a real issue.

    3) ANT is better than Murry offensively and defensively.

    4) KAT is a rich man's MPJ.

    5) Tag team of McDaniels & NAW constantly guarding Murry every minute of the game like they did Booker.

    6) DPOY, Rudy Gobert, sitting in the paint taking away easy dunker spot 2s of Gordon.

    7) 6th man of the year NAZ REID

    8) Veteran floor general Mike Conley

☆ If I'm a Nuggets fan, I'm already looking for excuses like 'fatigue & injuries' as to why we lost this series 😂

☆ As a Wolves fan, I'm feeling really confident before this series, but so were the Suns before our series so you just never know.

  4. Love Vogts optimistic “lesson learned” from round 1. And it’s a great point! Some health issues, some fatigue worries, but also some new potential help!

  5. Guys, your segment on how powerful it is for Murray to play not for himself, but for his team, really brought tears to my eyes. It's such a great life lesson.

  6. These games were all so close. I don’t know how the nuggets manage to stay cool. I was cursing at the refs all the way. 😅

  7. The Suns this year had a better net rating than any team the Nuggets have beaten in the playoffs since their 2020 conference finals run

The Suns last year had a net rating of 2.2, no other team they've beaten in the last 2 playoff runs had a net rating over 1 .

    Nuggets are in trouble.

  8. I thought that maybe Jamal was playing it up and that the subterfuge was payment for the missing shoes and having to practice in flip flops but maybe it was real and he was playing more for the team

  9. If you want to drink the soul of the Lakers, a sunshine wheat won't cut it. You'd need a boilermaker. Because it's the LA, the beer should be cheap swill and the whisky harsh. But man, it will hit hard like a LeBron freight train drive.

  10. I'm so tired of all this injury stuff, both from fans and players. You play, you play, you don't, you don't…goes for everybody starting with LeBron (yet to announce his injury this post season) and Embiid, but ending with everybody else…I don't get the fascination about playing with pain…if you can't run and dunk, you hurt your team by being on the floor anyway, if it just hurts, get out there and GET OVER YOUSELVES

  11. my hot take is that MIN beat up on one the worse team in PO (including MIA without Butler and Pelicans without Zion), they are good, but I expect Nuggets to win 4-1/4-2 if they have 10 legs to walk on

  12. Sorry Jamal made that easy shot for Jim, lucky man to get all the attention!! I will with MOJ and Most impressive is AG his rebound was so critical and significant @denvernuggets🙏MPJ is quite good for whole 5 playoffs games💕🌟👏🇦🇺💯

  13. Wolves strike me as the dumb jocks in high school personality wise. Contrast that to team MVH. While this could again be the hardest series for the Nuggets this year, and the Wolves have a chance, Nuggets in 5.

  14. I think you want strength for Towns and length for Gobert. What they like to do is:
    – let towns post up on a mismatch (Jamal as always)
    – give towns the ball at the top of the key so he can drive or shoot.
    – or put him in the corner so he can exploit weak side help

He is not fast. You want a big body on him. I don’t think jokic likes to guard on the perimeter. Would be funny to see though. So you probably want Gordon on him as much as possible. I don’t think PWat on Towns is good. Goberts handle is not as good. So length/verticality is more important, but Jokic will probably be on him. But who knows what Malone is cooking.

  15. I dunno about that playoff plunge logo Dline. Seems like a project that could be done by someone else! Lol jk. Looks great bro! 👍🏻

  16. Coach Malone needs to get Peyton Watson some real first half minutes. I think he can bring a lot of defensive energy to keep the Nuggets from falling behind early like they've been tending to do. And Watson just has good NBA instincts but still has those wobbly baby colt legs that just need a few more gallops around the pasture. Playoffs are high stakes, but they're not a time to play it too safe and Watson is truly an elite shot blocker.

  17. Yeah, Michael Porter is playing great, but I feel like he could be averaging 6 more points a game if he had even more aggression and confidence in his shot, which he deserves to have. If Murray can make mid range jump shots, then Porter sure can.

  18. I like the rivalry because of the familiarity tween teams and the fan bases deserve a matchup like this. My wolves may not make it past this round but we are gaining momentum for years to come. The wolves have the nucleus to be a power team for years. Plus it’s not the same old teams in the spotlight.

  19. I swear to god, the Nuggets are relying on mediocre basketball and better conditioning thanks to their altitude advantage. They have more wind in the second half than the opposing team does. But it would be a lot better if they were playing better basketball. I don't think they're going to survive if they keep going into halftime down 10 points.

  20. The stakes in this series and this entire playoff run could not possibly be higher for Jokic. If the Nuggets with the championship then people are going to immediately rank Jokic alongside Bird/Magic/Jordan and the debates will be "is he a top-5 all time great or merely a top-10 all time great". But if the Nuggets don't win the Championship then Jokic will be remembered like Duncan isn't — just some guy who won MVP or something and was good in his day.

  21. My definition of an MVP is a player who makes his teammates better, not someone who's the biggest scorer. Jokic is the only one that fits my definition. Jokic could average 50 points per game but he's unselfish.
The way Jokic plays turns Jamal Murray into an All-Star caliber player. On any other team, Murray may look like an average role player (i.e. if he was playing with the Lakers, Murray would not see the ball much)

  22. DNA-shmi-an-ai… Wolves suck. If Jokic will be aggressive Nuggets will win with confidence. Maybe even in 4.
If Jokic will mess around as in this series with Lakers – it will be very tough match. But they can win even in this case

  23. first off it's laughable how you guys 'think' the wolves are any KIND of threat to the nuggets, I will say they might win 1 game if that..they beat up on a suns team that without their 3 point shots are terrible the nuggets will be a different 🤣

  24. The Nuggets lack the focus and fire they had last playoffs. They're lazy and lacking effort. Squeezing a full game out of them is like pulling teeth. I don't see a championship team right now. Are they going to overhaul their brains?
