CBA Rules regarding Trades

As it’s now the offseason, we are seeing a lot more trade ideas being floated around. Thought it’d be helpful to go over some of the CBA rules regarding trades as invalid trades are already getting traction on here. This will only touch upon things regarding trades. Sources for all the stuff I’m going to be mentioning [1](https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/12/hoops-rumors-glossary-hard-cap-3.html) [2](https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/09/salary-matching-rules-for-trades-during-2023-24-season.html) [3](https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/12/hoops-rumors-glossary-tax-aprons.html)

Salary Matching if below First Apron

1. 200% of the outgoing salary (plus $250K), for any amount up to $7,500,000.
2. The outgoing salary plus $7.5MM, for any amount between $7,500,001 and $29,000,000.
3. 125% of the outgoing salary (plus $250K), for any amount above $29,000,000.

Salary Matching if above First Apron

1. Cannot take back more salary than you send out

If above Second Arpon

1. Cannot take back more salary than you send out
2. Cannot aggregate player salaries (only outgoing)
3. Cannot send out cash in a trade

You are hard capped at First Apron if you

1. Acquire a player via sign and trade
2. Takes back more than 100% of the salary it sends out in trade

Thank you for this. I might sticky this mfer lol too many fans in here talking about impossible scenarios. Do a little research before you post some of these ideas yall.

  2. So if 2 teams are above the 2nd apron, they basically can’t trade with each other at all because there’s no way the salaries will match exactly. Is that correct?

THANK YOU! I really hope the people that need to read this actually do because we all want to have conversations about different possible scenarios. However, people constantly making low-effort impossible trades as if they are playing fantasy basketball really makes me not want to participate since it feels like I’m just talking to a wall.

This should be mandatory reading for the enormous number of fans who imagine a “rich owner” solves everything.

Dummy here. Can we trade for Lauri or not? If not, I’ll shut up about it … 😤

It really depends on what Bron does.

If Bron doesn’t re-sign, I don’t see a path for the Lakers to compete. Time for a rebuild and move AD as well.

If Bron does re-sign, I’d like for them to move D’Lo and Rui but D’Lo is on a player option so he will likely test free agency. He knows Lakers don’t want him.

Very disappointed in D’Lo and Rui. Would have been nice to have them both become solid role players for the Lakers but what a massive blunder from both.

Bruh, I ain’t reading all that! Are we trading D’Lo and two first for KD or nah?!

This CBA is dogshit. For players and fans alike. It restricts movement like a mf. As a player your literally forced to take your rookie extension deals from the team that drafted you otherwise you’re missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars lifetime. Absurd.
