Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid out of playoffs. What it means for the Brooklyn Nets

The Bucks and 76ers were both eliminated from the playoffs on Thursday evening meaning that’s the end of the run this season for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey to name a few.
How do these results continue to shape the NBA landscape? Could we see more superstars asking out sooner than later? Could Giannis look at the Bucks’ situation over the next few seasons and grow very concerned? What about Joel Embiid’s future with the 76ers?
The Brooklyn Nets could be set up well to capitalize on some of these scenarios.

  1. Gonna be an interesting offseason for sure. Everything is up in the air. A lot of questions. Will Nic re-sign? How will Fernandez change the culture? Will Sean Marks go all in on a star or will he wait till next year (I prefer the latter)? Cam Thomas’ possible jump to stardom next year? Just a lot of things and I’m here for it

  2. Looking at the blueprint of today's rising teams such as Minnesota wolves, Okc, and Magics. I understand brooklyn is in one of the biggest markets in america but I'd prefer if we choose to rebuild and draft our way to superstardom. Also if you look at how celtics got tatum and brown if you guys remember it was through us… Please for the love of god can we just draft!

  3. History has shown that a number of all stars have been the most productive before they became all stars. There seem to be a reduction in their zeal after they get the big all star contracts. Some feel that once they've arrived at that level of status and financial security, there's no need to put in as much effort as they did when they had a chip on their shoulder and were battling like they had something to prove. After they achieved all star status, some developed dubious personalities and frequent injury histories. It should always be kept in mind that Marks blew up a Nets team, that showed potential, to sign super/all stars that had extensive injury histories and dubious personalities. There isn't any argument anyone could make to convince me that most teams would've done the same thing. Moving forward, I hope the Nets Marks remember that insanity is repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The super/all stars that become "available" in the future that have high character and skill level will be resigned by their present team. Those that have questionable personalities and injury histories will seek refuge with the highest bidder. Hopefully the Nets keep a bitter taste in their mouth from Sean Marks's foolish folly that brought the "big three" to Brooklyn in the recent past.

  4. Good discussion Doug. If I were a GM, I’m NOT going after superstars….for obvious reasons like giving up your draft picks and other talent only to have an expensive superstar that ends up injured or doesn’t fit well with the team. I would be in the business of drafting and developing potential superstars. That would be a better recipe for long term success.

  5. Doug makes some great points and it makes a lot of sense that the plan is to wait until 2025. However, my question to Doug would be if their plan is to simply hold serve what is going to substantially change about the nets that will make them attractive for a big name to want to come to? Essentially why the nets?

When you ask Mark, he has one answer players wanna be in New York City. All right, even if I believe that, why wouldn’t they want to go to the Knicks? I hate to say it, but they are better team and they already have a superstar on their team.

The other thing I would ask is what assets besides Phoenix draft picks would a team like the bucks want an exchange for Giannis? I don’t think the nets have enough. You think a package of Cam Johnson and Cam Thomas and the suns pics is enough to get Giannis I just can’t see that happening. If I’m the bucks, I want CamThomas, I want bridges and I want The Suns pics just to discuss. I want package far greater than the nets got for KD who is past his prime. Giannis is still really young.

if you want to get something really good you gotta be willing to trade something really good in the Nets don’t have too many really good pieces to trade. They have a bunch of role players.

  6. Marks needs to operate with long-term vision here. Given the ultra competitiveness of the Western Conference in particular and the league in general, I think this could be a highly active off season with many teams looking to retool and players looking for better situations. The goal should not be to chase stars but to gather assets so that you can build a young team that can compete down the road with Denver, Minnesota, OKC, Boston, Indiana, Orlando, Memphis, NY, even Houston and eventually Wemby and the Spurs. The Nets have high-level role players who are going to be in demand – explore trading them for draft capital and young players. Hopefully Coach Jordy and his staff can build up the young players we do have successfully. Over time, supplement our young core with free agents and complementary players through smart trades. Any superstar you trade for now is going to cost most if not all of the draft capital received in the KD and Kyrie trades. Improve as best you can this year and position the team to markedly improve in the Summer of 2025. We have 11 players who are 25 years or younger. Build around Cam T., Nic (resign him), Noah, Dariq, Jalen, DayRon, Keon & Trendon. Let's see what we really have. Get play-making PGs who can create their own shots and make others better. Think long term!

  7. My only question tho with the nets is you’re going to most likely pay a tax to have Gianni’s or embiied since both guys are already in the east. Most of these big super star trades send a guy to the other conference. And there are teams like the rockets or the thunder that could beat a nets trade package

  8. 23:40 I don’t think we’d be bottom feeding for 4 yrs. The nets in terms of a rebuild are way ahead of where they were in 2017. They have younger players with higher ceilings and a ton of draft picks. If we’re still bottom feeders even 2 yrs from now I’d fire everyone
