Pritchard on Tatum criticism: “That’s just looking at the stats…It’s just the casuals who think it’s only about just the shots. There’s so many areas he can affect the game – if he only ends up with 18 points, but we win by 25 points, he was really impactful.”

    Full quote:

Payton Pritchard with a message for those who don’t think Jayson Tatum played well last night:

“That’s just looking at the stats. People can have bad shooting nights, but what is he doing – he had some great defensive plays. He made the easy passes which led to assists – big rebounds, had 11 rebounds.

“It’s just the casuals who think it’s only about just the shots. There’s so many areas he can affect the game – if he only ends up with 18 points, but we win by 25 points, he was really impactful.”

Ya all the talk on /r/NBA about Tatum having a bad game pisses me off. Not because I can’t handle people talking shit about our players, but because it’s disappointing that so many so-called NBA fans don’t actually understand what they’re watching.

The whole Tatum discourse right now is a real litmus test for who is actually watching the games and paying attention and who is just looking at box scores and point totals.

If you watched Jayson Tatum play last night and couldn’t see all the good stuff he was doing for the Celtics then I don’t know what to tell you.

Tatum isn’t shooting great but he was also getting walled off by Cleveland all night. He did what he was supposed to do when the defense sells out.

It’s easy to look at Brunson, Mitchell, SGA and Luka and wonder why Tatum isn’t scoring more.

We know he is simply playing winning basketball. But let’s see how the next month plays out before we give a fuck.

  6. Kid_Crayola

He shot poorly but played winning basketball

  7. Efficient_Art_1144

How on Reddit is our team exactly? I feel like they are addressing all of the threads

  8. kylapoos

lol literally the reason we got have a stacked team is so it’s not all reliant on Tatum going nuclear.

We win by 25 missing Porzingis and Tatum having an off night.

    Let the haters hate.

People forget there’s more to basketball than shooting. He had a poor shooting game sure, but his impact in other areas mean he had a good game regardless. My biggest takeaway was he was in the flow of the offense even despite his poor shooting, there was far less iso ball from him. He struggled from 3, but wasn’t bad from 2, so if nothing else changes aside from those 3s dropping the league is fucked

This [chart](https://twitter.com/dangercart/status/1788263847058399689?t=CbMpgentssAPGN0twgDO3Q&s=19) (using DARKO data) from Dangercart is actually illuminating.

JT is still quite a bit better than his peers. He is probably the victim of his own success. Winning a chip will erase all the doubts. That’s why this year means so much – to JT but also to JB and Al (who are the longest-tenured Celtics) and to Brad and to Joe.

There’s a story that Larry shared in Drive about how one coach said he’d stop Larry (I think it may have been when Larry was in high school – I last read Drive 20 years ago, so the specifics are a little hazy) and Larry then proceeded to take just 2 shots in the game but had a ton of assists and rebounds and his team drubbed the other team.

People always talk about how they wish that we had Larry on this team, but when JT gives us an all-around performance and intagibles like Larry did, cretins bring up the shooting. Larry also had games shooting like that, but you know what? The Celtics won those games. Just like they’re winning now.

The Celtics are the franchise of Bill Russell, the greatest winner in the sport, who averaged just 14 points for his career — but had more championship rings than fingers on his giant hands (even if those rings had to be made for him after the fact because they didn’t give those out back in the day). That is the hardware that matters. It’s not the MVP trophy or the scoring records.

So you would think that Celtics fans, among all hoops fans, know that points aren’t everything, but somehow, more people here seem to think like Stephen A. Smith. I guess history is just too hard for some kids to bother with.

I’d much rather Tatum take a contested fall away 3 over 3 defenders than pass to a wide open Pritchard in the corner for a high percentage 3. He needs those stats more than Pritchard so that the haters will be quiet. He’s not earning his money and JB is thriving off of his shots. Who cares if their best defender or 3 are on JT. He absolutely must take and make those shots for me to be satisfied.

  12. I spent last year complaining that JT was forcing shots and that I rather him pass or do other things when his shot isn’t falling. He started doing that late last playoff and was looking great until he got hurt and we lost. He’s been continuing to do this all of this season til now and it shows up in the win column. Now, nephews are complaining that he’s not jacking up shots to get a better scoring stat line. SMH.

  13. theosjustchill

This whole Tatums numbers controversy is wild because I can remember last year when people were begging for him to just make the smart read when he was double or triple teamed or frankly just didn’t have it and now that he’s doing exactly that people are pissed.

  14. bkilpatrick3347

You give every game what it needs. These games do not need Tatum scoring 40 points. Solid unselfish basketball is what’s best for the team right now

  15. Full-Flight-5211

Shooting poorly but playing good defense and playmaking works for now. It will NOT work in the Finals. He will need to do all three if we are going to win it all

  16. Consistent-War7179

Again Jaylen Brown doesn’t get this much of protection.

  17. captaincumsock69

What makes Tatum so great is how he impacts the game when his shot isn’t falling. That’s what separates a superstar from a star. There’s so many star players that can get buckets but struggle besides that.

I spent the better part of last night arguing with literal children about this very thing last night, and I had to remind myself: “Never get in the mud with pigs. You’ll both get dirty, but only the pig will like it.”
I’m not arguing with casuals anymore. Ydkb, that’s on you and your sorry ass daddy for not teaching you the game

  19. EndlessCola

I mean just look at his plus minus, if you think he wasn’t impactful you didn’t watch and/or don’t know what you’re talking about.

  20. WranglerTraditional8

All of this is the wrong mentality it doesn’t matter if we win the game and a player has a bad game.
What matters is if a player is having a bad game he should not be playing for very long.
Now you can have a bad offensive game and have a great defensive game you don’t take someone out for that.
Your jump shot might not be working but maybe you’re driving to the hole is you adjust your game accordingly.
This is a team sport and I don’t understand why people act like it’s Tatum vs the Cavs it’s the CELTICS versus the Cavs.
Tatum can’t beat five people. Shaq Kobe Bird Magic Jordan none of them can beat any five professional basketball players.
I wish people would I wish people who supposedly understand the game would actually act like they do.
Now if Tatum has a terrible game why the f*** is Tatum in the game that long that’s Joe’s decision to bring him out. Frankly I thought that’s what he did when Tatum was not playing well. He said Tatum down Tatum readjusted himself probably got a good talking to about what he’s doing wrong and what he can do better and he went back in and he made those adjustments. He started backing guys into the post getting closer to the basket.
Anyone remember Jordan scoring 63 points against the Celtics and LOSING the game.

  21. ClappedCheek

There are some people in this sub this is aimed right at

  22. Theundisputed69

This team is so stacked we don’t need Tatum to take over the game. 5 guys averaging 15-20 ppg is a lot more efficient than 1 guy getting 40. Case and point Donovan Mitchel from the Cavs
