  1. Mr. negative Trev. You are twisting JJ's words. JJ is going to be the next coach. Embrace it and enjoy. Trevor thinks he knows more than basketball than Reddick. Delusional.

  2. I think JJ Redick should start as an assistant coach firsthand. I would like to see the Lakers hire Kenny Atkinson as head coach and have JJ Redick as an assistant. Maybe even having Frank Vogel as an assistant?

  3. LN is all about the narrative and once again Trevor is matter of fact-ly stating a bunch of stuff he has 0 experience with even as an amateur like a kid that played Mario Cart and is telling you which nuclear submarines work best under which conditions and what sailors are the best for those boats. How does he know these things? He doesn't. He is just talking nonsense yet again. Trevor follows journalists on twitter that also neve played any pro basketball and have no idea what they are talking about either and he repeats what the general consensus is there. It's like 10 amateur golfers voting on which runner has the best stride. They might eventually agree on someone, but they still don't know a thing about running, so it doesn't matter at all.

Let's talk about coaching win rates. Orlando was rebuilding. Doesn't matter what coach they had. Take away rebuilding Orlando and Frank Vogel had a 250-181 record with Indiana and made the playoffs in 5 out of 6 years. He obviously coached them to a level that was greater than the individual pieces there. After Orlando we all know he coached a 52-19 Championship season in LA and made them a powerhouse that dominated the entire season and the playoffs. Then the front office thought they could do better with less and he gave them a 42-30 season. They broke up the winning formula and had injury issues galore, but Frank did the best he could and did well enough. Then he got blamed for the 33-49 missed playoffs with a terrible roster build. It was Pelinka with the blessings of Jeannie and the Rambis that wanted to turn the Lakers into the Golden State Lakers with their small ball, which only ever came up, because Lebron liked chilling at PF and thought everyone else could do the carrying, so he can be fresh and take over when it matters. He couldn't. Trusting that plan is on Pelink, the Rambis and Jeannie and had nothing to do with Vogel. I guarantee you Vogel did not want Lebron off the ball conserving energy with no bigs around, a clogged paint and Westbrook at the helm. Everyone knows that wasn't Vogel's idea.

By the way he got fired, sure. But he went 49-33 with Phoenix, which is better than the Lakers did with arguably a much deeper roster.

If you want to look at the numbers. Frank Vogel minus the two rebuilding years in Orlando is a 426-312 coach. That's 57.7% win rate. Without the Westbrook year that's a 393-263 or 59.9% win rate. Those are elite coaching numbers in the NBA. Darwin Ham went 92-74 for a 55.5% win rate. That is still okay, but not elite. Mark Jackson went 121-109 as a head coach in GS. That's a 52.6% win rate. He helped create a new brand of modern basketball in the process though. So arguably not good numbers, but a bit of a different task. Meanwhile Budenholzer went 484-317 as a head coach, which is a 60.4% win rate. That's absolutely elite as well. Take away the year Atlanta tanked he's 460-259, which is an incredible 64% win rate. That puts him in the top ranks in win rate in modern times. Budenholzer is most definitely that little bit better than Darvin, that makes the difference. But so is Vogel. Boils down to whether you like your head coaches focused on offense or defense. Both guys are great at what they do. I think defense is what matters to win Championships.

Other factors that matter for Vogel. Vogel now has a decade of experience at the helm of a few different franchises. That means he is improving. Vogel is a good analyst. He identified the teams problems and fixed them in his very first year with the team. It's not his fault the FO blew things up then. Vogel can talk to the media or other coaches or players. Guy is a smart, calculated professional that can take the pressure, take the blame and lead with accountability. Vogel makes good in game decisions in the playoffs and calls the right timeouts all year. Vogel tries to give guys minutes in proportion to their contractual value, which perceive as being really fair to the players with their minutes. Vogel is a defensive specialist who delegates to focus on it. Yes, he needs defenders on the team for his strategies to work best and it is a good idea to give him help with the offense, but again that wasn't his fault that the Lakers decided to do neither. The offensive coordination is easy to get right now. Rondo and Reddick would practically replicate what the Championship team had, which was Rondo and Kidd. Vogel can also give you continuity, because he knows Lebron and AD and has experience with quite a few of the other players.

At the end of the day Vogel most certainly has a really good idea what went wrong and how to fix it. He did in 2020, when the Lakers had the same idea that he had. They worked together then. They got the right veterans. They didn't do half a rebuild and didn't try to play small ball all season long then. They played bully ball and emphasized defense. They won the Championship doing that. Meanwhile Budenholzer definitely has the same strengths that Ham has, he is just much better at them, but he'll need defensive help and that isn't easily available on the market, unless you can somehow get Budenholzer and Vogel as an assistant. Then that might well be even better. I see those two as the clear front runners though. And I think Vogel is the better choice and never should have been fired in the first place.

  4. Dude, we just got done running a five wide out with Darvin ham. Why would we want to bring back Brian Vogel to run the same type of offensive system come on now you can. You guys should wake up and realize that the people that run those systems do not know how to run any offensive plays. Wake up hilarious! Thank you, Jason kid for the 2020 championship facts

  5. As @jsoft_og7065 pointed out here, Frank had the best coaching staff in 2020. If he was hired again, no JKid, who's gone for good. And also no coach on the floor with Bron, like Rondo. But maybe we could get Rondo back as an assistant coach. I know he always said though he wanted to be a GM someday.

  6. Rob better be on his hands and knees begging Frank to come back. With the right roster Frank is more than capable of making the right adjustments. Also his style is the opposite of Ham in the sense that he actually wants to play bigger. No more 4 guard lineups against Denver 💀

  7. I absolutely CAN'T believe people are saying bring this man back!!! EVERY LOSS was Darvins fault BUT in Phoenix, it's KD, Beal and Bookers fault! Yall are unbelievable!!! As I DIE HARD Bron fan which makes me a default Laker fan, I'm here to tell you player to player, Phoenix had better players! Grayson, Eric Gordon and Beal shoot BETTER than EVERY Laker!! KD and Bron at this age cancel each other out because Bron is not the defender he once was. Booker can score with AD. Nurk and AD cancel each other out on the boards. Get outta here with that Frank shit!

  8. I’d rather have a coach that wants to win than a coach that wants to teach. If you just want to teach be a high school coach. The feeling of winning is the biggest motivator

  9. Sounds like JJ Riddick is looking to get high. That's what I got out of what he said during the interview. It was all about him!

  10. Reddick doesn’t want to be a coach. He wants the quick easy path to a big payday. If he wants to be a coach he could easily put in an application at a high school, college or NBA assistant. Plus his speech sounds like a player not a coach.

  11. Bring back Vogel. This man had an old Lakers roster playing championship basketball and dont forget he pressed all the right buttons in the bubble, he made adjustments against Portland, Houston, Denver, and Miami.

Rondo, Bradley, Green, lebron, dudley, Morris, McGee, and Howard were all over 30, and he made it work. Imagine what he can do with the current roster. Vogel saw the potential in AR, the opposite of Ham not believing in Max Christie.

  12. What has Ty Lue accomplished with Clippers ? Not much , so why do. Some Lakers fans Envy a Clippers coach at all ? Have some self respect.

  13. You guys need to start talking up Darvin Ham so the competition will take him. They should check out that German coach, when he gets upset and starts screaming in German that should have an effect on them.

  14. honestly wouldn't hate it Frank Vogel is a good coach and the last two playoff series made me miss how he actually made adjustments during a series to respond to the opposition.

  15. There are different types of coaches.

There is that teacher (Larry Brown) and there is also that killer (Pat Riley) that lives to compete and function as a leader of men.

Phil employed a teacher in Tex Winter and operated more as a competitor/ psychologist/ shaman.

I don’t care what style of coach JJ is, so long as he can be good at it. He is too fresh for this particular Lakers team though. I think the Lakers should stay clear of him as a head coach, but probably fit him in as an assistant.

  16. I hope the Suns land Darvin Ham just like when they hired Frank Vogel after the Lakers fired him 🤣 … As for Rob Pelinka and the Lakers front office – tick-tock-tick-tock… the clock is ticking and the pressure is on. They can't afford to take their time anymore now that there's competition for potential head coach hires

  17. Im full team hire JJ and Rondo make them split coaching duties and Lebron as well… I think if were being honest if Mark J or Ty lue isnt available then we should swing for the fences and look for the future, while mainting interest with lebron and AD…Trade for Murray or Mitchell, Murray you might be able to keep to Reaves…

  18. The Lakers are going to be screwed for the next few years. They are not winning a championship with a slowed down LBJ and a B-Roll coach, a brittle AD and a bunch of scrubs because they trade for an overpriced third star.
