Mike Pettine on his career w/ the Cleveland Browns, working with Grant Udinski & finding a QB1

Former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine joined UCSS to discuss his tenure in Cleveland, what he learned, and where he may have failed. Coach Pettine shared that communicating, delegating, and facing the issues head-on are pieces of advice he would give to someone who was going to interview with the Browns. Pettine also discusses what it is like to work for Jimmy Haslam and how the introduction of analytics was the beginning of the end of his time in Cleveland.

  1. This interview is great ! Mike speaks alot about all the things that go into making a Head Coach…it's not all about Xs and Os -if it was..everyoe would want to be a Head Coach . Thanks UCSS !

  2. As I’ve said, Flores would be lucky to be a water boy in the NFL. Nobody wants a guy who cannot accept responsibility for his shortcomings and then makes unfounded allegations against his employer. Pettine acknowledges the league’s thoughts on Flores without mentioning a word. Yet Bull would prefer him as the Browns next HC.

  3. Can we hire him as an analyst or front office executive?

A true football guy who has seen almost any scenario imaginable… ALSO the way he built out his staff he could be used in the coaching search

  4. Can you imagine if we’d stayed w Pettine and hired Dorsey? The whole “ tough conversations “ is missing in every aspect of life now and what’s sad, if done correctly, it helps people SO much in preparing he/ she for how brutal life can be. Love Pettine!

  5. Of all the Head Coaches since 99, Pettine is the only one I believe had what it takes to be successful. Smart. Good communicator. Quality leader. Tremendous integrity. He had a good thing in Cleveland. A young and up and coming OC in Kyle Shanahan, Jeff Halfley, Aaron Glenn and Chris Tabor. Then the owner and GM decided to drop a grenade in his lap. Glad he’s got no hard feelings toward the organization.
