From what I understand, the reporters actually hide many of the stories that would ruin players reputations and we don't hear those stories until they retire and start a podcast. Russ may not be one of those guys but not being problematic off the court doesn't make you immune to pu lic criticism especially when your game is as inconsistent as his is.
