The Real Reason the Spurs Lost in OT (It Wasn’t Fox)” | Advanced Breakdown

  1. Aaron Gordon makes the difference for the Nuggets; he's probably the most athletic player in the NBA and he can limit Wemby. If the Spurs face the Nuggets, I have little hope in the playoffs because if Kornet and Wemby can't play together, you have no power forward to provide the physicality.

  2. It’s not Fox’s fault. While his decision making isn’t great as the offense stalls due to iso play rather than running our offense. The reason for the loss, I think is we’re not matching up against the Jokic/Gordon combo. I understand why we’re not using French Vanilla. It’s because Luke isn’t a three point threat forcing us to have to play either KJ or Barnes defensively against either Jokic or Gordon which neither can because they can’t muscle either well.

If we play Kornet or even Plumlee instead, we counter that combo much better defensively.

Maybe we should pair Olynk with Wemby in those moments to maintain a three point threat they have to respect while still having a mobile big defensively on Gordon so Wemby can continue checking Jokic.

We need more Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant too. Both played really well when they were in the game.

  3. Dammit. I wish they gave us more hype points. Even after spending all my hype points on this channel this week, there’s still much more that needs to be hyped here.

As usual, incredible job with your breakdowns. Wish more people could discover your work!

  4. I love plus/minus. In my mind it’s actually one of the best stats we have once you understand it. It’s usually highly accurate in the story it tells.

  5. Dylan needs to be running point with Castle. Castle needs to continue to run the point when paired with Fox. Fox needs to run point when paired with Dylan.

I would love an analysis on these pairings. These are just my observations from the eyeball test but would love to see what the data says.

  6. The game was competitive throughout. It's a great learning experience and we got plenty of valuable footage for the coaches to go through. Honestly, Denver are the team I want to avoid the most in the west, as they're the only one who can play five out without sacrificing size.

  7. Denver is average in transition. We can run on them constantly and beat them down the floor. Denver is best in a half court set. When we slow the game down, it helps them.

We also need to keep the pace up to help offset some of our deficiencies. That’s why our starting five works so well against them. We have better backcourt athletes than they do. Their front line depth though is better than ours an area we need to improve upon in the draft this summer.

If you look at how OKC consistently beats Denver it’s because they run on them constantly like we can. Then SGA goes off too.

Can you do an analysis that shows how our starting five did in transition? I bet the data will show that we can attribute some of that starting five success you mentioned to transition scoring.

  8. My man, I earned my master's degree in mathematics, and earned the academic excellence award from the Department of Mathematics as a ph.d. student. Plus minus is well known to be misleading when it's not the central player in the game. When he is inefficient and doesn't pull defenders off of Wemby, then they can double and triple Wemby without paying for it. Stephon Castle and De'Aaron Fox and Keldon Johnson went 0 for 16 from 3. Those are our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best players. They have to make shots because they are the main facilitators and creators. If the defense can back off of them and double and triple team Wemby, then it going to cut off space for Wemby and for driving lanes. The plus minus reflects other factors with these players.

  9. This game was a coin flip. If the ball gets released a few millimeters to the left, on Wemby's shot at the end of regulation, we're not having any blame conversation and the Spurs are the best thing ever 😁.

Fox made some bad plays at crucial moments, but if there's an actual concern with Fox, it's that a player with his ability to get into the paint at will, should attempt to get to the line more, instead of settling for pullups and floaters.

The results of this video's breakdown are not really a surprise, and match the eye test. Castle is a developing playmaker and point guard. There haven't been many second year point guards in the modern era who could pull off the lone facilitator role on a championship level team. Steph is no different. He's 21, give it a year or two.

All in all, if there was ever a good loss, this is it. Removes complacency and simulates playoff stakes: hostile arena, against a veteran team, inconsistent whistle, etc. the only downside is that it might push the nuggets into our side of the playoff bracket, but we still have a game left against them, to rectify that.

And let's not forget to give credit where it's due. The real reason we lost, if any, is that Cold AF Serbian mfer, who's been the best player in the NBA for the past six years. I don't know about you guys, but when the potentially best offensive player ever goes up against the potentially best defensive player ever, I like to kick back and enjoy the show. GSG!

  10. Fox is a 229 million dollar man and fouls a 3 point shooter, who hits the shot, hits a free throw and within an instant the game swung. He then forced up several 3 point shots RATHER THAN calling a timeout as more of a poised vet would do. You have a 7'5" monster to lop the ball to on an inbounds play rather than forcing those shots. These decisions contributed in a major way to the loss of this game and Mitch Johnson, being the coach, needs to do his job AND COACH. Call a timeout. Draw up an inbounds play and execute. Barns was also snubbed this game – Shot really efficient, for a change, then was subbed out for a struggling KJ that went 0-6 behind the 3 as well. Just a poorly executed game, as the 13 prior, double-digit lead lost games have been.

  11. A lot went wrong, but fox made some really dumb plays at the end. I think hes still stuck on this "clutch player of the year" title and trying to live up to it. I dont blame him directly for the loss, but I do hold the last plays he made against him. He know what he did, he knows he messed up. If was that tired, he should have gave it to someone else or took a seat. People miss, but its his persistence to keep the ball in those scenarios that is gonna knock us out of the first round if they aren't careful.
Imo, they needed to lose before going into playoffs and nuggests were the best team to lose to, especially because we play them again. However foxs behaviour at the end of close games has me worried

  12. How easy it is for these fly by fans to blame fox when he has been a major part of this team …. Let him win a game and these casuals will be on his nuts … 😂

  13. Never underestimate that Denver altitude. Other athletes swear by it also! Jokic is a pudgy dude, but he's very used to and acclimated to it. If you don't train in it, you will never get used to it. And Victor already has a wind issue.

  14. I imagine this problem will solve itself in the playoffs. I think we’ll see an increase in foxes minutes. Same goes for Wembanyama. I think specifically against Denver, the starting five minutes must increase. I think that is strictly a matchup issue. With OKC, the problems are different, and the Spurs can continue utilizing the lineups that it’s used all season. Joker is the primary problem in all of this.

  15. It was a combination of Fox, Castle, and Wemby being visibly gassed and his defensive effort displaying that. Plus minus is stupid when giving full context. Instead of passing to Wemby while Braun was on him, he shot an AIR BALL 3. He threw a horrible lob to Vassell, and blew an open layup to tie the game in the same offensive sequence. Castle looked Wemby off twice, leading to 2 turnovers. You sound stupid with this idiotic momentum curve to people who watch the game

  16. Fox had a bad game and his defense is average at best. We put to much effort trying to stop murry and left everybody else open.

  17. …fck your data…we know what we saw…and we saw a player that's making 39 million this season…who went 7-19 from the field and 0-6 from three and scored 14 points and commit rookie like mistakes in a playoff like game… obviously this would be no big deal…but fox has had a lot of bad games that cost us the win…he should he averaging 20+ ppg not 18.5ppg…this was a big game a statement game for both teams we lost by two but we still lost…and as the highest paid player on the team he should not have bad games in playoff like game's… it's to late in the season for those type of games from an all star player…I'm starting to think we over paid for him…it doesn't matter what he does in these next four games… they're home game's…and when wemby is not playing he should have 24+ppg…

  18. Fox lost us the game my guy and that's ok. No need to fight reality when everybody saw him make bad play after bad play in the game. It is ok to have a bad game and he will bounce back like he always does going forward. Go spurs go!

  19. There's no one to blame… it was toe to toe till the end… but that free lane to Aaron Gordon dunk in the end was hard to swallow… we would secure the W if wemby didn't double Jokic unnecessarily 😢
