WHO STAYS?: What players SURVIVE the Roster Shakeup, and the HARSH Reality of NBA TURNOVER

Utah Jazz fans face a burning question: when the team returns to contention, who will actually remain on the roster? Drawing sharp comparisons to the recent rebuilds of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, and Detroit Pistons, David Locke examines why only a handful of players typically survive the transition from tanking to winning—raising pressing questions about the futures of Keyonte George, Lauri Markkanen, and rising prospects.

Locke breaks down the latest trends in NBA roster retention, explores how star power and draft pedigree affect longevity, and considers the challenges young talents like Kyle Filipowski and Bryce Sensabaugh will face as their roles diminish. With player development, shot distribution, and the shifting team culture under the microscope, the episode evaluates if George and Markkanen have what it takes to anchor the next great Jazz squad—or if history says otherwise. Is another roster overhaul inevitable on Utah’s climb back to NBA relevance?

  1. The Jazz are going for it next year so I think all of them will be on the trade block. Hopefully get a 2 way guard from it.

  2. We need to go after Ben Matherin from the clippers. He does all the hard things well, I reckon a jumper could be teachable.

  3. So the current core (that will be paid big money) will be JJJ, Lauri, Keyonte, and Kessler. Who is the most likely to be gone first?

Lauri and JJJ have prohibitively large contracts when it comes to trades, but are the most established players. Walker might not even be here next season if negotiations go poorly. Keyonte broke out, but is a terrible defender, and the Jazz are going to be severely cash strapped.

  4. If we win the lottery, the 4 remaining players will be
    1. Key
    2. Ace
    3. Jjj
    4. Lotto pick.

Lauri makes too much money, and Kessler most likely will be making too much as well.

  5. David: how do you know our players don’t play hard enough to win. The core hasn’t played for months. This rag tag group could have beat Denver the last 3 games because they played harder than the nuggets …we actually had to bench Flip and Brice in the 4th quarters in order to lose those games. Let’s be more optimistic it’s more fun that way.

  6. If your a jazz fan. The jazz need a top 3 pick this year. Even if they end up with boozer at 3 they still take him. Talent Talent Talent. They need a STAR and if they rework the roster Boozer can be that guy. If they get Darren or AJ they can slide them into the 2-3 spot. But they will still need to make some hard choices. But this roster wont go any where with out a clear cut Stud JJJ and Lauri are not that Star. Great 2 and 3 options and Ace Bailey wont be that Carmelo or Kobe guy. He just wont. Will be interesting to see what they do with the draft and the opening day roster. There are battles at every spot. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

  7. Hypothetical question: what would this season have been like if the Jazz won the lottery last year and got Flagg? Would we still have been tanking this year, or would we have started the push a year early? I don't think we would have had a real chance to win the whole thing, but with Markannen, healthy Kessler and Hendricks, and rising Keyonte, who knows?
I also wonder what this says about flattening the lottery odds. Can we expect more middle-of-the-road teams to win the lottery, then start tanking to build around a #1 overall? Does this do more harm than good in regards to tanking?

  8. If we max extend Cody, Flip, Isaiah and Brice that will cost 41.25 Mil each or 100% of the current cap of 165 mil for 2027-2028 season. Just 2 of them is 82.5 mil. We might not be able to afford 1 and field a good team. That’s the new reality David. We better hope none of them are outstanding or they may all be gone.

  9. Out of all the "bouble guys" that are in our roster I think Cody Williams has the best shot to still be here. He has the length and athleticism and defense to have a long career IF he can get consistent with his outside shot. Guys like Sensabaugh and Flip are in a reaaaally dubious position although I like them both I dont think they or Collier are on the Jazz long term.

  10. Well yeah. We are not ready to hang with San Antonio or Denver or OKC next year. We will be good. We won't be a 5 seed. More like 6-9 seed in the West. Which is still winning basketball and will fun. But yeah we are 1st round playoff exiters next season and if lucky maybe get 1 playoff win. Lets see how we are doing with Ace ace and Keyonte balling out in 2 more seasons. 💪
