Anthony Edwards’ story is one of the most emotional journeys in the NBA, built through unimaginable loss and relentless drive. Growing up in Atlanta, he was raised by his mother and grandmother, the two people he loved most, until tragedy struck in 2015, when both of them passed away from cancer within just months of each other while he was only 14 years old. That pain could’ve broken him, but instead it became his fuel. Edwards has said losing them “turned his heart cold,” but also pushed him to grind harder than ever, carrying their memory with him every step of the way. He even wears the number 5 to honor them, as both passed on the fifth day of the month. Through the adversity, he stayed locked in on his dream, rising from a kid with nothing but heartbreak to becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and a superstar in the league. Every time he steps on the court, it’s bigger than basketball, he’s playing for the two people who believed in him first, turning pain into greatness.
