I'm a Pistons fan for 36 years come June. You know, the NBA Finals where Joe Dumars played despite his father dying and I watched very closely in the aughts as he assembled his team in Detroit, as President of Basketball Operations. The first thing he did was hire a former Assistant Coach whom he had bonded and gave him a "coaching perspective" and "wide lens" in John Hammond. He became Vice President. Mike Ociepeka became and Assistant Coach despite not having a Head Coach, yet. The Pistons had made "safe moves," according to Dumars. They didn't take risks. That was from his introductory press conference on June 6, 2000. Doug Collins leftovers (Alvin Gentry was Interim Head Coach in 1998, replaced by his assistant in 2000, George Irvine) since firing Collins after a lackluster beginning to a season with expectations of contention (1997-98). The Pistons were floundering around .500 with the Jordan heir-apparent in Grant Hill. So, Dumars drafts Mateen Cleaves, Hill leaves for greener pastures, he pursues a team of overachievers in the 2000 Orlando Magic and mines Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace. He'd trade Jerome Williams, Junkyard Dog, and a fan favorite in Detroit, for Corliss Williamson. Having a post threat for the first time in three seasons, and a more consistent one at that, stabilized the Pistons and depsite a terrible billing offseason, Clifford Robinson was brought here for leadership and defense and Williamson was re-signed. Guys you never heard of–Zeljko Rebraca (29-year-old Euro star that cost the Pistons a draft pick to get his rights) and Victor Alexander (a consistent lockerroom presence) were added.
But the biggest additions were in Dumars front office team–the Coaching search scoured the league (and the culture in Detroit) to find a suitable replacement. These names were all assistants for former players at the time, but you know them now:
Rick Carlisle
Bill Laimbeer
Rick Mahorn
Terry Stotts
Dwyane Casey
Hammond left the Pistons in 2007 to pursue the Milwaukee Bucks job and did little things like drafting Greek Freak and trading for Khris Middelton.
Kevin O'Neill would become a name that followed Carlisle through the aughts. The taping and montoring during games were upgraded.
Tony Ranzone, the international scout that found Dirk Nowtizki and convinced the Nelsons of his worth, was mined from Dallas. He helped the Pistons draft a stashed-overseas Mehmet Okur, the first draft pick of Dumars to ever make an All-Star Team.
My point is this–Dumars designed systems and put things in-place that exist to this day for a different owner, in a different arena, in a different city (Auburn Hills versus Detroit). He is good at building a team not only on the court, but one to serve it off it, too.
So, pay atttention to these moves. In a couple of years, they can become the pieces that power his dynamic turnaround.
What about Memphis grizzlies old coach
Unless the perfect coach appears, keep borrego
WE NEED MARK JACKSON ,or give ANTIONO DANIEL'S a try
