What does this mean for Ace Bailey? | Hoops Nerd Show
With the Utah Jazz potentially taking Darryn Peterson, what does that mean for Ace Bailey. Having Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. makes it difficult to break the starting rotation. Will Ace Bailey start? Will there be some sort of trade?

I wouldn't be surprised if Ace starts. Peterson will obviously get his minutes. And will most likely move into starting lineup 15-20 games in unless Ace continues to take off. I hope he holds onto starting for this reason, not because Peterson isn't awesome. Unless he clearly outshines Ace in summer and pre season. But I'm hoping Ace shows he's right there with the top players in this draft. 🤞
I really like the idea of trading markkanen for depth pieces. If we could get ausar thompdon thatd be aersome, but honestly id be fine with almost anything. I feel like keeping him will stifle ace's development, even if it means limited our celing for tjid next season.
What if I told you that the starting lineup next year is Key, AJ, LeBron, JJJ, Anthony Davis, with Ace, Kessler, Flip, Collier, and Brice off the bench.
Congratulations on becoming the best Utah Jazz show in the state of Utah. Your sincerity and genuine love of the Jazz makes it a fun and really great show. You haven't become pretentious and too good for everyone that watches your show unlike another Jazz podcaster host that cannot speak truthfully and have forgotten about the people that helped to support him during his ascension. I guess you REALLY can't tell what a person is like until that person gets a little bit of success and his true self comes to the forefront. You have always seemed like a genuine Jazz fan. The other guy only thinks he has the Jazz podcasting Locked down, how can someone be a journalist but they can't say anything negative because all his Jazz pals will get mad at him and kick him off the gravy train, hard to be unbiased that way.
I was proven wrong I was one of those people that believed the NBA was corrupt and that they had it out for the Jazz, I guess after watching the Jazz get fined 2 years in a row and having decades of never moving up in the lottery made me pretty cynical towards the NBA. But in this particular case I was absolutely proven wrong, and thank God for that.
What is the problem Ace comes from the bench? I mean, Utah can go with Keyonte, AJ/DP, Ace, Laurie and JJJ in some games. But there is something more important I think…remeber Manu? That's it. 😉
If the Jazz end up with Peterson, you keep Ace because Peterson cannot stay healthy. If the Jazz are lucky enough to get AJ, you move Ace. Either way, he is not a long term piece. He is this team’s current day Adrian Dantley.
Like I said many times before shooters get in a flow state of mind and then in few games in a row they can feel it and shoot the lights out. Jazz have been constantly on purpose taking Markkanen off when he shoots well and that affects the %. Also when he is second, third or fourth option he will have missmatches and defence can't focus on him the way they occasionally have. Can't wait to finally be able to enjoy the wins. 😂
i really like the idea of instead of one fixed starting 5, we swap out who’s in the starting lineup depending on opponent/matchup. thoughts?
Due diligence for 82 game season with D Peterson who has not proven out @ 36?
Imagine if Ace Bailey has a similar offseason to what Key had last year 😱
We are gonna be so stacked next season. These are all great problems to have
Didn’t Ace just sign with a new agency? I wonder if he is seeing this coming. Coming off the bench in a small market, you really think that is gonna fly? That’s no good for the career. I could see it if we were in a big market. But you don’t get away with that in a small market. I give that a 15% chance of working. I suspect we may see a Ace + 2nd pick trade for 1st + Tre Johnson. Better get used to the thought of that. Excellent video though this needs to be discussed!
Funny how Lauri is being bashed for his defence, when Keyonte has been the worst in the whole NBA 😀
Trade 2nd and Ace for AJ 👀
Utah Should ship Lauri during off season
Hopefully Ace gets a trade so he can continue to evolve elsewhere. I'm sure you guys will be well compensated. Winwin
Ace Bailey fell into our laps and will be a superstar in this league. We gotta figure it out before the off-season ends and I think trading Lauri is the way to go.
If Ace comes off the bench and this year’s Rookie starts I don’t see Ace sticking around long term possibly even having a fallout with the organization and requesting a trade before his Rookie contract is up…
THIS GUY THINKS MY SON IS GOING TO SIT ON THE BENCH AFTER ALL HE HAS PROVEN AND THE RECORDS HE HAS BROKEN THIS YEAR PLAYING WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION IS CRAZY..I CANT BELIEVE YU THINK WITH HIS TALENT AND ATHLETICISM HE DESERVES TO SIT ON THE BENCH OR COME OFF IT WEN YUR PICK HASNT EVEN PROVEN OR PLAYED ONE SINGLE GAME IN THE NBA… LOL THIS IS VERY COMICAL…THEN YU ALSO THINK ACE IS GONNA BE KOOL WITH THT…#I HOPE YU GUYS REALIZE WHAT YUR LOSING WITH ACE OR WILL IF HE GETS TRADED…ESPECIALLY IF HE COMES BACK TO PLAY AGAINST UTAH WITH A DIFFERENT TEAM…AND ALSO YUR PICK SAID HES A POINT GUARD AND WANTS TO PLAY THT POSTION NOT A TWO GUARD.. DO YUR RESEARCH AND YUR TAKE ON THT SIR… YU GUYS REALLY DONT REALIZE WHAT YU HAVE UNTIL ITS GONE#ACE LOVES UTAH THE CULTURE AND THE FANS I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT HE DOES BUT IF YU HANDLE HIM WRONG HES GONE✌🏾🙏🏾#LOYALTY#TMAC STORY WEN HE LEFT TORONTO
It's crazy that some Jazz fans want Markkanen gone next season. Let him play and show that he deserves his place. He is great off ball player and that is important because you can't have everyone handling the ball.
You really think ace comes of the bench from the start? I think he's earned that spot until it's obvious that the #2 pick is better, whether it's 10 games in or 50
What does it mean for Cody Williams for real, Ace gon be straight
I get the whole Utah thing with BYU when it comes to AJ but I'll go out on a limb here and say that Peterson is actually the better fit for the Jazz. His game fits in perfectly with the pieces they have now. The situation with Ace is a little strange. He loses out by comparison to Peterson and Keyonte so I wouldn't want him starting in the backcourt. He also loses out to Markkanen and Jackson and of course Kessler has to be the starting Center (although playing a small lineup is a little enticing). The Jazz need to demonstrate some thinking here in how they coach and strategize. Either way, I would NOT trade assets to move up one slot in the draft. I actually think a 6th man role might suit Ace really well.
Every team needs a really good 6, man. Look how important Clarkson was
your analysis of LM is hypocritical. he was held back and put bad situations. Either tanking was the biggest issue or Jazz are bad. too much effort to make some look bad while ignoring all "potential"
Having a tough time deciding who to "relegate" to 6th man is a really good problem to have. Necessary, in fact, to compete for championships. Don't trade anyone away until the salary cap forces it.
Not buying that the new rookie goes straight to a starting spot. He will have to beat someone out. What he will get right from the start is a rotation spot. Starting at 18 minutes a night, and will likely playing 30 by the end of the season.
Nothing either AJ or DP have done in the NCAA has shown that they are NBA ready. Both have more upside than Flagg, but Flagg came in to the NBA already having an NBA IQ, which both AJ and DP lack. Rookies don’t help a team win except for in a few exceptions. Neither of the incoming prospects have a feel for PnR, and won’t likely obtain it until late in their second season. At the present, Neither of them are better shooters than Ace. DP has the potential to surpass him but it doesn’t look like AJ ever will. Ball handling and facilitation is the area where we really need AJ and DP to shine. Neither of them had a good assist to TO rate.
Meanwhile, Ace is going to be coming back having worked his ass off in the off-season. All reports say that Bailey has an excellent motor for wanting to do the work in training.
The best thing AJ and DP have going for them is their very high upside, but NBA ready players, they are not.
DP says he wants to play point or combo and that he feels himself with the ball in hand, but he never showed he could see the floor and was bad at PnR in Kansas, and doesn’t realize how valuable what he displayed playing off-ball is as an NBA guard. If we get him, we for sure want him to be a combo and be another facilitator on the team, but it’s Key that we want to have the most on-ball usage.
AJ had terrible catch and shoot numbers. If he does develop a 3 point shot, which it’s very much looking like he doesn’t have, he definitely not going to have it his rookie year, in which case, you probably can’t play him over Ace who shot over 35% from 3 with high volume, which is excellent for a rookie season.
I’m not saying AJ or DP don’t find their way to a starting spot at some point their first year, just saying it’s not a given. They will have to earn it. The Jazz are trying to win games this time, and neither AJ or DP are prepared to contribute to winning games. Neither of them shoot it like Kon, neither have the IQ of Cooper Flagg, for sure, neither are Wemby or LeBron level where you have to start them off the bat, not when your starters were actually talented like we are.
Just like with Ace, it won’t be until year 3 until we can really see what we have.
If it is AJ or DP, imo, the best thing that could happen to them is Ace being in their way and having a reason to work hard and excel.
Lauri is our best player. I'm not worried .
Crazy idea what if we trade Lauri and 2 for 1
Ugh, James you need to calm down about having a #1 level prospect coming in. Yea we are excited for the Jazz’s future, but there is no one in this draft class except maybe Boozer who is ready to contribute to winning games in the NBA, and even Boozer wouldn’t start on our roster because it’s too talented if we indeed have Walker going forward.
First off, you already brought up the 82 game marathon consideration. Neither of the prospects can handle a full season at this point. They will need to start with less minutes and work up from there. The next thing is this idea any of our young talent is beating out Lauri this year. Lauri is special. Sure he’s not all NBA, but what he does is extremely valuable for our offensive rating and is the reason why we want to have so many scorers on our team. 28 ppg on his usage last year is insane. On top of that is how well he pairs with Key. They are essentially 119 points per 100 possessions as an offensive engine by themselves. Which is already a really good offensive engine, and then you layer JJJs pressure in the post with that. Just with those three players we are projecting to have one of the best offenses in the league. Lauri is still our primary scorer.
Point 3, I guess I have to hammer it in again. AJ does not shoot from outside well enough to be on the floor instead of Lauri and let alone Ace Bailey. Proving he can shoot 3s is going to be a big thing for him. DP on the other hand is not near the level of distributor we need him to be to give him high usage and he is not a more efficient scorer than Key, Ace or Lauri right out the gates. This actually makes him a liability because we will have to give him reps as the on ball creator, and our offense is going to suffer because of it.
I will say that if we do draft DP, I think he more likely becomes the starting 2 later in the season, but this is only because Ace’s handle prevents him from being a combo guard like we need. Even then, I’d be shocked if DP plays more minutes.
Long story short. Yes, we should be excited, but they are rookies. They are not NBA ready, and it’s not going to be until year 3, maybe 2 where the high upside, the thing we are most excited about, because they both have very exciting upsides, kicks in and we get to see just how truly blessed we are.
We are not in the situation we were in 2017 where Mitchel arrived. Ace is way more talented than Hood.
