BREAKOUT: Should Utah Jazz TARGET Darius Acuff at #2 pick in 2026 NBA Draft?
Should Darius Acuff Jr. be a contender for the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft? David Locke makes a compelling case for the Arkansas guard, calling him the draft’s best offensive player and highlighting his dominant SEC tournament run, elite athletic measurements, and comparisons to Tyrese Haliburton and Lonzo Ball. Despite concerns about his defense and size, Acuff’s late-season numbers and leadership on winning teams put him firmly in the spotlight.
Key discussions include Acuff’s scouting intrigue versus rivals like Cameron Boozer, AJ Dybantsa, and Dylan Peterson, plus a breakdown of crucial NBA stats such as opponent shots in the restricted area—numbers that could signal a bright future for the Utah Jazz under Will Hardy. With comparisons to legends and speculation about the league’s next moves to counter Victor Wembanyama’s dominance, David Locke dives into what could shift the balance of power in the NBA.

No, but if the Jazz can somehow manage to get Boozer and Acuff (without givng up too much) instead of AJD or DP,, that should be a huge win in my book.
No easy answer dont stew this up easy aj dybantsa if he goes first DP simple
Because even if darryn petersen has lost a bit of athleticism he is still a great defender and scorer.
“he can get his own shot without a dribble”
Like, he just travels???
Take Acuff. We will look back and regret. Who gives a crap that he's small. Curry is small, brunson is small, mitchell is small. You can win with small guys.
I have no doubt that Acuff will be a great offensive player, who can't defend a chair.
Players like Brunson, Lillard, and Trey Young are so sexy with their offense (and Locke is all about offense), and win a lot of games, and can win some playoff series – but it's so hard for them to win a title in the NBA. The entire roster has to be built to rescue their inability to defend and they eventually match up against a balanced, well-coached team with true two-way stars and they can't compete.
If Acuff hits he will end up as something like Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, or Jalen Brunson.
If DP hits he would be something like Anthony Edwards, Devin Booker, or SGA.
I’d prefer the upside of the latter. But if you do go for Acuff, trade back. Don’t take him at 2 since you probably don’t have to. Dig a bunch of picks out of the Clippers or Nets. The Nets are desperate enough you might be able to pull 3 additional picks out of them.
Classic locke only valueing one side of the ball.
How do you watch that okc/spurs series and think? yeah, lets draft a donovan/brusnon type player who will lose in the finals to the real teams in the west.
Red flag 1 DP:
1. Less athletic in college than high school? Who is getting less athletic at 19 vs 16-18 years old?
2. Obvious health concerns
3. More than likely mental health issues. Does not seem like a happy guy, does not look like he's loving life when he's about to enter the NBA?
4. Says he is a loner and anti-social. Not good for a team. Reminds me of a Leonard, quiet, hard to like the guy. Hard to offer leadership quietly. Look at Wemby.
5. Does not seem like a fighter. Mental stuff has him looking for reasons to come out of the game.
6. Amazing talent but trending downwards in too many ways.
There's more, but this alone suggests there is too much risk. The Jazz would need to know something amazing about him to overlook this.
I would say we are 90% not going to take DP on draft night. I think size is important to Ainge, and athleticism. If its not AJ, which it would be crazy if Wizards let him go…I think we look at Caleb Wilson. Could trade down for him at 4 perhaps? Ainge has done that before.
He hasn’t been asked to play defense. The simple fact is we don’t know if he can play defense.
I watched a ton of Arkansas basketball this year. Arkansas relied on Acuff so much on offense that they hid him on defense. When Arkansas was on defense, Acuff typically covered the corner wing who was waiting to make a 3 point shot. If that player went hard baseline Acuff basically let him go by and let his bigs handle it. This was an Arkansas strategy to keep him fresh on offense and out of foul trouble. I would not be worried about his defense. And he’s not a “small” guard. He actually the exact average height of the average NBA point guard. Look it up. He’s going to make some team look very smart.
I’m good on a Trae young type in this loaded of a draft… you have even done videos that your go to guy can’t be an undersized guard. Acuff would be a fine trade back candidate (if you literally got a god like offer in return I’m talking about absolutely destroying another teams present and future offer). But that’s it. I will be so livid if we took acuff number 2
You gotta at least consider it. The kid is special.
If we’re thinking of Acuff we should trade back and acquire assets. That’s the only way this makes sense.
If the Jazz were at 4 or 5, then id be down for it. At 2, you can't with who is there
I would be a little more behind considering Acuff if we didn't experience Donovan. Donovan was one of the best offensively player that Jazz have ever had…. but his defensive weakness and size were always being exposed, especially in the playoffs. Do we really want to go down that path again?
Imagine the positional size and potential of Ace and DP together!
No, nope. Not Acuff, WE NEED DEFENSE LOCKE!!
Darryn might be 80% of the offensive player of Acuff but he's 10x the defender. It's that simply
Why are we not talking about Caleb Wilson!? He won ALL his matchups vs the Top 3 prospects AJ DP and Boozer I would trade down and get him
Please give Caleb W some love….. he is driven…. he is worth a trade down to 4 + 15 Chicago picks!
You can’t trade out of the top 4 in this draft. Even if Acuff ends up being a superstar, it’ll be like Dame where he’s MVP level on offense, but so bad on defense that the whole team has to built around his deficiencies
DP measured 6’4.5. Only one inch more that Acuff. Acuff was significantly better in college. Not even close.
If we really want to win a Championship, we are going to need to go through the Spurs and OKC. We need size to do that…draft whoever falls then GO GET MARA.
Tony Jones said…not only is Wemby already the best player in the World right now, but also has "THAT DAWG" in him.
Just watched his highlights from the tourney. Some concerns, he didn't seem to have a step back. He also didn't seem to play above the rim at all. But he got to the rim at will.
I haven’t even watched the video yet but I just know this is going to be an extremely dumb take. But I’ll give it a listen
He is far from the best offensive player in the draft, AJ and DP is.
Shake, you just Alexander and Tyrese Maxey was not first team all Americans stop the cap
There is absolutely no reason to consider a cuff when Peterson is on the board longer bigger and most importantly he’s a two-way player
Acuff and Wilson are being overlooked. They could be top two in draft in a few years
How’s is Acuff better than DP?
Cut your hair bro … let it go.
Reading stats for a job is INSANE.
Fun to fill up time, but if we want to be realistic the answer is clearly NO
How does he work on our roster?
I wish we had a crystal ball
Nope. Acuff is not that dude for #2. Jazz do not need another undersized guard. I dont know anyone who would seriously consider this kid top 3 or 4
