Can the Detroit Pistons Land a True GAMECHANGER in Free Agency or Will They Have To Make A Trade?

Detroit Pistons face a pivotal offseason as free agency rumors swirl and Jalen Duren’s playoff struggles cast doubt on long-term plans. Can Trajan Langdon land a true difference-maker, or are the best options off the table? Ku Khahil dissects ESPN’s top free agent targets—Quentin Grimes, Rui Hachimura, Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Kelly Oubre Jr.—debating whether any can provide the shooting and self-creation Detroit needs next to Cade Cunningham.

Jalen Duren’s postseason review raises tough questions about his $287 million max extension eligibility after a strong regular season but deeply disappointing playoff showing. Ku Khahil breaks down Duren’s struggles in rebounding, self-creation, and defense, drawing parallels to the DeAndre Ayton contract dilemma. Should the Pistons commit to this young core, or does Duren’s playoff performance signal warning signs for Detroit’s rebuild? Join the conversation on the Pistons’ most pressing offseason decisions.

  1. That's why I keep mentioning that Kyrie Irving's reasonable contract would allow Cade to play off the ball more, resulting in fewer turnovers from Cade.

  2. Ku Khahil, I wanted to get your take on something. Wouldn’t it make more sense for the Pistons to let Jalen Duren test restricted free agency and see what his actual market value is instead of potentially bidding against themselves?

I don’t think teams usually use restricted free-agent offer sheets unless they believe the original team either won’t match or may look to work out a sign-and-trade. Plus, an offer sheet ties up a team’s cap space until the Pistons either match it or negotiate another move.

  3. If Duren isn't willing to resign for anything less than a max, do you think Pistons should explore sign & trade ideas. Myles Turner + assets wouldn't be a bad pickup imo.

  4. I dont think we should resign him. If we gonna have an old-school type center he should atleast be elite on defense. Easier to replace his value for a lot cheaper.

  5. The only one im even remotely interested in is Rui. He might be able to give you a little more than Tobias. But I'd prefer if they took a bigger swing than that.

  6. We need to see exactly what we have as trade capital. What draft picks can we trade? What players exactly can we offer? Can we even trade Cade?…That is not blasphemy. What is the cap for next year? ….Coaches know Duren…can he be coached up? What is his attitude about .about learning? What is his attitude about about working to fix his game? What is his problem exactly?
Is it low basketball IQ, he does not know how to pass? Is he fixable? Bickerstaff and his assistants must know the answer to this right now Offer him 3 years, 40 million and tell him his future is up to him.?…I dunno, I have never seen a player self destruct like this. Is he mental??? Has Duran himself said anything about his melt down???

  7. its amazing to me that u have no insight on what a modern basketball team is. Rui can score and all u talk about is defense Kelly oubre Jr shoots the 3 and is a decent defender.

in 2026 and beyond u have to score and defend when needed the Pistons are hard to watch because of this all defensive attitude. The NBA wants fun to watch teams not this super defensive minded fist fight every night. U seem to love struggling players with fantasy upside. u got to level up ur view of basketball the bad boys aren't coming back

  8. Too many questions about Duren. If we can get him for under 30 a year, then that seems like an okay deal. He has potential and could continue to be a star.
If he isn't willing to do a cheap deal, then I don't think paying a ton for a center who isn't a sure positive is even remotely wise.

  9. i think anything over 35 a year for Duran is overpay. and is goin to kill the pistons moving forward with that contract if he's getting more than 35

  10. Cant pay Duren more than 30 a year, he has proven he is not worth more. Even then whats the point when he cant show up when it counts. He was unplayable for 13 of our 14 playoff games, thats not even a small sample size really. Cant use age as an excuse, plenty of stars have made their mark in the playoffs at 22. Dont cripple this franchise right when we are taking off by signing him to a huge contract. Sign and trade for a proven scored to help Cade.

  11. Good episode. More questions than answers still to be asked. Duren making 3rd Team All NBA, does that mean he is a top 15 player? Is Duren worth $44M+ average per year? Can the Pistons win a championship led by Cade, Duren and Ausar? Safe to say that we will find out if Langdon is done with his evaluation process and put on his big boy pants to make major not marginal improvements to the roster

  12. Ayo, colby white, CJ, powell, Rui are ALL bandaids to the problem we face if we pay Duren max money. That Max money needs to go to a true #2. We will be a flawed team with 2/3 of our salary cap going to Ausar and Duren, two non-shooters. Therefore, our core in Cade, Ausar, Duren will be handcuffed in our salary cap space being stricken to two non-shooters, and still NOOOOOOO true #2 option. For the rest of Durens max contract here, we will try to piece together Tier 2 guys like the above which will sadly not make us a contender. Anyways, We not ever beating OKC, or the Spurs with those teams currently constructed, so for fun lets go get Kyrie or Zach Lavine and try to win the east for a few yrs.

  13. The Thunder are about to be in a financial pinch, we should try to make it worth their while to get a 2-way guard/wing like Wallace, AJ Mitchell, Dort, McCain, Caruso. A pick or 2 and minimal salary back. Duncan gets burned on ball down the stretch in the playoffs and JB won’t keep Asaur on the floor secondary to spacing. Any one of those thunder players can 3 and D with an improvement on self creation compared to Asaur and won’t break the bank
