WALKER KESSLER DEAL – What is the right number? What does it do to Utah Jazz? Roster building

Utah Jazz weigh a major commitment—should Walker Kessler command $25–30 million per year? David Locke breaks down the latest contract rumors, analyzing Kessler’s true defensive impact, offensive strides, and how his possible salary stacks up against NBA peers like Rudy Gobert, Bam Adebayo, and Jarrett Allen. What does this mean for the Jazz’s roster construction under the new CBA, with big contracts for Keyonte George and Ace Bailey.

Locke explores key playoff insights: to be a rotation piece on a contender, young Jazz players like Isaiah Collier, Cody Williams, and Bryce need to become two-way threats and reliable three-point shooters. Can the current Utah core mirror championship contenders in balancing star salaries, retaining flexibility, and developing high-value draft talent? Get the full breakdown on the Jazz’s future, potential cap crunch, and which players might be playoff rotation locks.

  1. Its painful to pay walker knowing Keyonte is a year behind him. If Walker is paid Lauri will certainly be gone which could factor into the Cam Boozer conversation. Id rather have Key than Walker

  2. Let's not forget he'll be playing next to jjj which will make both of them better at different things
You have to pay him what else is there out there? And without him we don't have a center who can really do much to help us in the playoffs

  3. If the price is too high let Kessler walk. U don't want to hamstring the budget for someone who is consistently injured. The goal is to have depth like the Thunder and u can't do that without cap flexibility. No piece is worth sacrificing the whole for unless maybe a superstar like jokic.

  4. I wonder if Kessler’s people would be open to a front loaded contract. 35 25 25 25 kind of a deal. Put an outsized portion of it in the last year of Keyonte’s rookie deal while opening up space for his extension.

  5. Lakers will offer him 35M+, we should just do a sign and trade. Lauri, JJJ, and Kessler was too many bigs in a starting lineup as it is. Sign and trade to the Lakers for their 25th pick and a young player or two would make more sense

  6. It always makes me shake my head when I hear, "guys aren't getting paid yet" and their salaries are seven plus figures. NBA salaries are truly wild at this point.

  7. Minor note: I'm hearing 'k' in Isiah's last name. it's Hartenstein, there's no 'k' in it.

In terms of fan given names, iHart (as in iHart radio), Harty, or when he was on the Knicks the 'Hart connection' in reference to old WWF tag team, iHart and Josh Hart.

  8. Kessler is already better than turdbert at offense. Imagine spending so much on Rudy who is so horrible offensively. If only Locke's stats could make Rudy better at putting the ball in the basket

  9. I agree that Kessler's sophomore slump was overrated. I watched him a lot during those games and there was such an obvious theme after getting rid of Conley. He would have an awesome defensive possession with a block or something, then run his but off in transition (which he is really really good at btw) and either THT, Clarkson, or Sexton would dribble around in circles with blinders and have no idea Kessler was wide open, then they would turn the ball over. Or Kessler would have a perfect cut to the basket and the same thing would happen. After this happened a few plays in a row, Kessler would get noticeably frustrated and just disengage. Then we would have several low effort plays in a row. That season was so painful to watch for this reason.

I noticed this happening a couple games in a row, so I started studying it every game the rest of the season. And sure enough this happened almost every single game. Kessler would put in a ton of effort, not get rewarded for it at all, then he would not give much effort for several plays. Then once Key and Collier slowly started taking over it went away and Kessler came back. I've noticed that on offense if Walker gets rewarded here and there for running the court in transition, he plays a lot harder in every aspect of the game.

  10. @LockedonJazz, I really enjoyed listening to your show over the years because of your insight and proximity to the Utah Jazz. That said I literally had to skip through eight minutes of adverts in order to watch the actual content of the show.
That's such a long time to run Asda on a 33 min YouTube episode.
I hope you're doing this because times are tight, because if you're doing it just to get more and more and more money, it's just gross!

The thing that's absolutely disgusting is that you continue to sponsor Better Help. That organisation is a known scam! They're no good at all, and I almost figuratively forgot they existed, because I hadn't heard them in any YouTube adverts until watching your show the past couple of days. show again, when I heard it on your show the last couple of days.

Locke, You have a voice that matters for the Utah Jazz and us fans, but please know, as a long-time listener, and as a lifelong, 39-year-old Jazz fan, those adverts are just too much at this point, and you're torturing your audience and killing it too many chances of people wanted to watch it live.

I implore you please to please look into better help's controversies, because their ethics are horrific, and do you really want to tie yourself to their track record? How can you not know that you're attaching your name to scam artists in effect.
    Thank you.

All that said, I think you're correct that it's gonna take 25 to 30 to sign Walker, but I don't believe he's worth that based on for very strong games from last year. That sample size is way too small for someone with an injury history and good but not great productivity in his career. $20 sounds about right to me.
