Detroit Pistons Approach to Team Building Will Determine The Success of Cade Cunningham Era
Detroit Pistons face a critical crossroads: should they prioritize developing young talents like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Ausar Thompson, or chase short-term wins with veteran additions? Ku Khahil explores how these choices could define the franchise’s ceiling during the Cunningham era and shape Detroit’s path toward contention. Is nurturing player growth—even at the cost of regular season wins—the key to unlocking the team’s true potential?
Spotlight shifts to Isaiah Stewart, whose contract, value, and possible trade scenarios make him a pivotal piece to watch in the Pistons’ offseason moves. Ku also discusses the emotional side of NBA journeys, revisiting Andre Drummond’s heartfelt reflections on leaving Detroit and his hopes to retire as a Piston. Can Detroit balance roster decisions, cap flexibility, and a winning culture to build a sustainable contender? Don’t miss this sharp analysis of the Pistons’ high-stakes offseason strategies.

I think ku does read comments 😂
At least you know people are going to roast you for the Andre Drummond comments Ku
Can we sign Malik Beasley yet? Imagine Duncan, Malik and Huerter all playing 20+ minutes each. That’s incredible shooting (assuming they all shoot > 38%)
One of Ausar or Duren needs to go. None of the top 6-8 teams have more than 1 non-shooter in the starting 5. Some have 0 non-shooters. So unless you think that a 23 year old player who can't shoot AT ALL now, will start shooting at the league average on high volume, which to me would be wild, that's the harsh reality.
The "vibes" time are over now that we are ready to aim higher. Unfortunetly, we can't keep the whole gang together and expect to improve to where is necessary.
Really love Stew, but I know he might get traded.
Everyone needs to hit that hype button I just dropped 1100 points on ku and locked on Pistons he always has good quality coverage on the team
Banking on just Duren and Ausar after Cade ain’t gonna be it either
I dont see Troy who built the Pistons, being cooperative with Langdon after that lowball offer to be his scout.
Thanks Ku. I don't hate Cade, I just been saying this Cade Agenda is stunting the growth of the young players
I prefer scenario A. Then in January or February you can tighten things up if you need to.
Ausar cannot get a max yet imo he has to be able to shoot. Otherwise Pistons need another facilitator. Ausar is great at the basket and as a passer but from 15 feet and beyond he is a liability and for that i would love if Pistons went and got Norman Powell. He has grit, can shoot, facilitate, and plays defense. You plug him in and make a couple small moves but keep the core and Pistons can win a championship
What the hell is wrong with you people. Weaver tore the team down. That was five years of hell. We are going into year 3 of Trajan as gm and we are still talking about development. We should be looking to win a damn ring. We have two all nba players. An all-defensive player. One is already paid and two more about to be paid. It's time to get the players need to win. Say what you want about Weaver but he signed and traded Jerami Grant into Duren. Weaver was the one that got that Stewart contract you love so much. Harris should have been traded and turned into a better contract. Holland was a #5 pick that's not suppose to be a project. Trade him if we can combine him with another player to get an upgrade at a position. Lanier was a 2nd pick that's your project. And he is cheap. You 56 mil of cap money wrapped up in Robinson, Stewart. Levert and Holland. And we have all of our 1st rd draft picks and a ton of 2nds. It's time to make something happen. The Robinson contract was designed nicely. I don't know how the hell Levert got a two year mle contract. So far Trajan had not impressed me. Last year you said, don't sign Duren if he goes and a bigger contract the Pistons should be happy to pay. Well Trajan fafo. Pay the man and move on. This is the problem no one wants to point out when Trajan screws up. Just go along with his decisions. Yeah no one thought the Pistons would be this good at the start of the season last year. But when they were still good at the trade deadline we should have tried to help fix some of the teams problems.
Levert 100% has to be traded, they can sign someone like Marcus Smart for a lower contract and he does everything levert does but better and has tons of playoff experience. Holland, Stew, Duncan can all be on the trade block too. I think it might be more beneficial for Holland to be on a worse team where he can start and have tons of playtime, he will turn out to be a good player- teams that are rebuilding will want his potential, its low risk high reward for them. But the Pistons trying to develop Holland and Ausar- who will sign a big extension, is not going to work. They play a similar role, Ausar only averages 25 mins a game. He needs to play more if you want his scoring to develop. The minutes and shots that go to holland in the 2nd unit, some of that has to be given to Ausar so he gets a chance to be a main scorer in certain rotations.
Locking in Duren and Ausar to big contracts means roster changes have to be made to accomodate them. It means Duren has to carry a heavier load, and having the comfort of a C contributor like Stew might not be possible since stew has to be paid also for his next contract. Paul Reed is playing good and can handle more minutes, so you can bring in a vet like Drummond on the min to be the 3rd string center. If they can bring in Trey Murphy via trade, sign Rui Hachimura and Marcus Smart i think that'd be a hugely successful offseason- all without bringing a "superstar" player. For a team starving for 3's, adding these players would solve this problem and improve the team a lot- In clutch time, you can trust cade, rui or murphy to hit that 3, even if its a tough shot, and definitely if its wide-open.
good stuff as always thank you
Development is something you do with high school players and college players, if they wanted time to develop all due respect, they should have stayed in college
1st Listen. Another dope show Ku. I respect your honesty about Drummond. I get it. With that said, I'm straight on Drummond. 😂
Ausar Thompson and Duren are one dimensional. I'm fine with losing both of them for two way players. Ausar is exceptional defensively but a total liability offensively. Outside the paint Duren is a non-factor offensively and defensively. Thunder & Spurs have players that have an impact on both ends. Or we continue to invest in players that will have us stuck in the second round. While other teams compete for championships.
If their goal is to sustainably compete for championships they aren't close and depending on renting 30 yo bench vets to make them competitive isn't sustainable. Using them to help the young core feel what winning is again after their years in the cellar is okay but they need to get more of the right talent and develop them to get to where they say they want to go.
Go young or this song has been sung.
After thinking about this more the real problem goes deeper. What needs to happen sooner than later is a Gores ,Trajan, JB and Cade meeting to determine who's agenda they are going for. Two of them might need to go and I'm pretty sure Gores isn't one of them.
