This isn't an insult to Chris Carter—he's clearly a very good player and seems like a solid guy. Talent-wise, he has everything you could ask for. But there's a difference between being a great player and being a ruthless competitor.
To me, Carter falls into the "very good" category rather than the elite tier. The truly legendary players combine talent with an almost obsessive killer instinct. That's what separated guys like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant from most of their peers. They weren't just skilled—they were relentless, cutthroat competitors who imposed their will on games, opponents, and even teammates..
Most professional athletes are talented. Some are more gifted than others. But only a handful have that cold-blooded mentality that elevates them from great players to all-time greats. Carter was outstanding, but I don't think he had that same savage competitive edge, and interviewslike this highlight the difference

T Mac admitted himself that he wanted out of Canada because he wanted to play as close to his home as possible. VC didn’t say the same but after awhile he probably started thinking the same . VC and TMac are real cousins.
People love to make up excuses in hindsight. VC knows he wanted out but now wants to be perceived better by Raptor fans.
From what I remember, Vince went to Richard Peddie, the President and CEO of MLSE at the time, to ask him to talk to two free agents in the summer of 04…one of whom was Steve Nash. Richard promised that he would do so. Steve wound up signing with the Suns on a long term deal, one seen as risky given his age and injury issues. But what pissed Vince off is that Peddie never reached out to Nash or the other guy at all. That's when VC mentally checked out, coming into camp out of shape and clearly wanting to be gone.
Now, he did have a legit Achilles injury that he was dealing with that could have contributed to his substandard play the first 15 games or so. But he clearly wasn't into it early on. I'm loathe to use the word "quit" because I do believe the injury issues were real, but few players I've seen have done a better job of a superstar looking like he quit on his own team like Vince did during this period. 😂
To his credit, his numbers did improve in the final ten games of his Raptors career…they weren't at his career averages, but they were a lot better than the slop he'd produced overall. Was that because he no longer wanted to be traded and wanted to make a go of it (that talk was out there), did the injury issues clear up, or did he simply play his way back into shape? I imagine it's a combination of all three. Which is why I don't think he quit…not purposefully, at least. But he was absolutely checked out mentally on the Raptors from August until his last ten games.
I never fully blamed Vince for what occurred because the Raptors franchise really was being run poorly at the time. But it is annoying seeing Vince acting like he had NOTHING to do with the schism that took place. Even if all the caveats I laid out are so, he still looked borderline unprofessional. Coming into camp out of shape just wasn't a thing to do at that point, especially as the star and leader of the team. And then some of the stuff he did say, like threatening not to dunk anymore, was just needless and silly. He has to own that, even if he chooses not to.
Ultimately I'm glad Vince and the Raptors made peace, because without him I'm not sure they last here much longer than the Grizzlies did. But his revisionist takes on what took place where he believes he was 100% innocent has always been a bit silly.
Ooh why is there a part of the video on draft night where he exchanges caps with his teammate from college in Antwan Jameson? The Warriors made a mistake right there by trading him thinking that Antwan was the better player.

The problem is They were transitioning when they should've been integrating. Bosh left because they didn't give him a Vince Carter, but Vince left because they wanted Bosh

Those who were watching at the time still remember. I'm not saying there weren't complications behind the scenes but a little professionalism would have been nice. Never saw Garnett quit on a team and not give his all – Those Timberwolves teams were likely very frustrating for him. Kobe had real beef with the Lakers circa 06 i think. Westbrook etc. Guys came to play hard.
I looked at the video twice, and Vince said that "If yall want to go with Bosh, cool, but if yall don't want me here, just move me." I could be wrong, but you don't say that if your heart is really into staying, but I don't remember no bad press about Vince and management being moved from the Raptors, I could be wrong
