    Champagnie and Keldon Johnson are already two solid wings and, although they have different skill sets, they can both cover minutes at the 4 in modern lineups. In my view, the real issue isn’t the lack of a traditional power forward, but the lack of a physical, versatile big who allows Wembanyama to fully exploit his hybrid nature.

    Wembanyama is not a traditional center. He’s probably the most unconventional big man in the NBA: he protects the rim like a center, but on offense he often plays like a power forward or even like a perimeter player. He brings the ball up, creates off the dribble, shoots threes, and likes to operate far from the basket.

    For this reason, I believe the Spurs have a structural problem that is often interpreted the wrong way.
    
    When Wemby moves out to the perimeter, the tallest player on the team suddenly finds himself seven meters away from the rim. If the rest of the lineup consists of light wings and guards, the team lacks the physical presence needed to box out, secure offensive rebounds, limit second‑chance points, and absorb the physicality of heavier opposing bigs.

    In other words, the problem isn’t that Wembanyama plays poorly at center. The problem is that his offensive style naturally pulls him away from the paint, leaving an area unprotected that would normally be occupied by the team’s most dominant big.

    This is why I’m not convinced that the top priority should be a pure power forward. I believe they need a real, physical, reliable big man — someone who can both replace Wembanyama when he rests and play alongside him in certain lineups.

    The main issues the Spurs showed in the Finals against the Knicks seem to be three:

    1) Disastrous clock management under pressure, with rushed shots.

    2) Too many turnovers, especially in transition.

    3) Too many rebounds — especially offensive rebounds — conceded to the opponent.**

    The first two can be improved with growth, experience, and better organization. The third, however, is a structural problem tied to the physical makeup of the roster.

    A second big would solve multiple issues at once.

    1. Providing quality minutes when Wemby rests
    
    Right now, the Spurs depend enormously on Wembanyama. A reliable center would maintain rebounding presence, rim protection, and physicality even when the French star is on the bench, avoiding the performance drop‑offs that often occur when he leaves the floor.

    2. Freeing Wemby offensively
    
    Many see Wembanyama as a center. I believe his maximum offensive potential is that of a gigantic power forward.

    With a physical center next to him: the center controls the paint; boxes out heavier bigs; battles for rebounds; absorbs contact under the rim;

    while Wemby can: receive at the high post; attack facing up; act as a creator; shoot from mid‑range or from three over any defender.

    People often say Wembanyama should attack the rim more. It’s true — I agree. He should attack the rim much more.
    
    But it’s also true that one of his unique qualities is the ability to score from outside despite being over 7'4".
    
    If he chooses to play away from the basket, the Spurs must have someone who occupies the space he leaves open.

    3. Creating new tactical variations
    
    This is where things get interesting. With two smart bigs on the floor, their roles could constantly alternate. In one possession:

    the center sets the screen; Wemby runs the pick‑and‑roll; the center rolls to the rim.

    In the next possession: Wemby sets the screen; the center attacks the basket.

    Or Wemby can space out to the perimeter while the other big occupies the paint.

    This constant interchange would make it much harder for defenses to prepare matchups and rotations, because there would be no rigid distinction between the 4 and the 5.
    
    The paint wouldn’t necessarily be clogged, because the two could continuously swap positions depending on the action.

    4. More flexible and less rigid rotations
    
    This is perhaps the most underrated point.

    When I talk about adding a center, I don’t imagine a player who can only play center.
    
    I imagine a modern, mobile big who can also cover minutes at power forward.

    This would make the rotation extremely flexible.

    For example:

    when Wemby rests, the new big plays center;

    when Wemby is on the perimeter, the new big occupies the paint;

    when Champagnie or Keldon Johnson need a breather, the new big can shift from center to power forward while Wemby slides back to center.

    The team could seamlessly switch from:

    solution n. 1) Wembanyama (C) + Champagnie/Keldon (PF)

    solution n. 2) New big (C) + Wembanyama (PF)

    soluzion n. 3) Wembanyama (C) + New big (PF)

    depending on the opponent and the moment of the game.

    This would allow the Spurs to adapt better to matchups without being forced into the same lineup structure every time.

    Conclusion
    
    For this reason, I think the entire debate is framed incorrectly.
    
    The question should be: “What type of big allows Wembanyama to be the most devastating version of himself?”
    
    My answer is: a physical, mobile, versatile big who can play both the 5 and the 4.
    
    Not just a backup for Wembanyama. Not a traditional power forward. But a player who makes the rotations fluid, protects the paint when Wemby moves away from the rim, secures rebounds and physicality, and allows the Spurs to deploy different lineups without changing their identity.
