INEVITABLE: Cap constraints limit Orlando Magic’s offseason, leading to one UNAVOIDABLE dilemma

The Orlando Magic face a difficult offseason as they enter the tax for the first time and deal with the restrictions of being in the first apron. It leads to one inevitable conclusion: Trying to make trades and roster moves that improve the roster will be extremely difficult.

It has been well known and predicted that the Magic will need to make an inevitable decision on Jalen Suggs’ future. While a trade may not be imminent, the apron restrictions the team faces could lead the team to break apart to regain flexibility and depth. And that has kept Suggs in the crosshairs all season and summer long.

Can the Magic get enough from trading Jonathan Isaac or Goga Bitadze to make a successful summer? Or will the team ned to risk breaking up its starting five to get over the hump and advance deeper into the Playoffs?

  1. Hi Philip, great content as always. Does the JI contract have any value as a way for another team to dump salary and go under the tax for example? So we could use those 15 milion to grab an important bench guy?

  2. I would personally trade AB next summer, once his extension kicks in (trading him this year would mean to lose those extra 10-12 milion on a salary slot in 2027). Offensively he doesn't complement Paolo and Franz well and I feel that Suggs can be more effective in a limited offensive role, basically as a catch and shoot player and cutter. He is much more important on defense than AB and I think his decreasing contract can be really valuable in a year or two.

  3. How about this trade franz and Suggs for ja and Jackson from Memphis perfect match like if you agree just like we did back in the day for Mobley and Stevie franchise

  4. A forward thinking gm would package JI contract now with AB to get real meaningful help. We about to lose JI money and AB not a great fit with our starters. Why you always saying trade Jalen instead of AB?

  5. Rumor has it Memphis is going to have to give draft capital to get rid of ja

Why not make a trade package to quire ja and 2 of our picks back and then use those picks with players to quire better assets

  6. I really don’t understand why Jeff is so enamored with Jalen and Wendell. We are not good enough to pay that price with this roster. But hey what do I know

  7. Well, like you, I like what Suggs does, the problem is he is really an SG not a PG. We are putting a circle into a square. Black is more of a PG and if he improves his 3 point shot can be our starter. Having a $30 million backup SG would be hard to balance. Looking forward, at this moment, our center of the future could easily be Moustapha Thiam, 7'2" with a 7'6" wingspan, center currently at Michigan or the "Italian Wemby" Luigi, 7'4" and 289 pounds depending where we draft.

  8. Could we sign and trade for Sexton into Goga’s 7 million or maybe Robert Williams and then also get someone at the taxpayer exception (Sexton, Williams or Simon). Then Waive Isaac.
