The Washington Wizards had a massive week. AJ Dybantsa was selected with the number one overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, giving the franchise its most coveted prospect in years. The 6 foot 9 forward out of BYU led the nation in scoring as a true freshman, averaging 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 51 percent from the field, and those numbers only scratch the surface of how dominant he looked. Scouts have drawn comparisons to Tracy McGrady as a scorer and Scottie Pippen in terms of his versatility and ability to impact multiple phases of the game, which is about as high a ceiling as you can project for any prospect. He arrives in Washington as a potential franchise cornerstone with immediate starter upside and the kind of two way skill set that does not come along very often.
The Dybantsa pick comes alongside an equally significant roster move on the veteran side. Trae Young re-signed with the Wizards on a four year deal worth approximately 212 million dollars, which includes a player option on the fourth year. Young had declined his 48.9 million dollar player option and tested free agency for the first time before ultimately choosing to stay in Washington. His 2025 to 2026 season was a rough one, as he played in just 10 games with Atlanta due to a knee issue and then only five starts with the Wizards before missing the rest of the year with back and quad problems. The contract drew some skepticism given the injury history and the price tag, but the Wizards are clearly betting on a bounce back season and believe that pairing a healthy Young with Dybantsa and Anthony Davis gives them a genuine window to compete in the East sooner than expected.

I feel players like Trae stopped caring about winning and being competitive a while ago. And I wouldn't be surprised if mfs like Trae, Ja and Zion just start retiring early after they clear earning from their big contracts, Ben Simmons style.

I noticed that the Wizards are taking on a lot of "washed" former All-Stars. This is probably good if you're trying to sell tickets, but NOT a good strategy if you're trying to WIN.

They overpaid for trae for sure. If it was the same aav on a 3 year deal it'd be fine i think. Considering the state of the roaster, i don't think its the worst thing ever. They have money to spend, and i wont have to watch global terrorist "bub Carrington" play pg for my team. If they don't sign AD they should have enough cap room to sign extensions for the rookies up in a couple years.
First, let me start out by saying this, now that Jalen Brunson won the championship. It’s becoming a guard driven league again.. as you can see in the draft 70% of the top 10 were guards. Next there was offers for Trae Young from teams like Miami, Milwaukee, Nets, and two others. If you want high-quality impact player, especially point guard you’re going to have to pay.. in the case of LaMelo Ball and him going to the Timberwolves. If things pan out, he’s going to get a bag there too. Also, if things don’t work out, you can still recuperate your value in a trade in his third season of his contract because again we didn’t take much to get him
Honestly thought he'd take a 2 year / 50 total with player option deal to prove he has it and could get a better contract later. Wizards are insane to offer that much. Teams have figured out his offense and defense… Was not worth it, $40m a year is WAY too much as well.
And dumb stuff like this is how you go nearly 50 years without having a 50-win season.

I fully agree with just under 40 million for a year after Trae opted out. Like extend and reduce a per year salary. 150M/4yr would be really good starting offer, and after negotations agree to 160 to make him feel better.
Wizards are the NBAs unofficial waste management and recycling department. They take all the contracts nobody wants and simply tank. Already heard friends saying "this will be the strongest Wizards team ever". I believe it only when I see it.

the Wizards are bidding against "salary incentives". Blazers GM wrote a new chapter in ownership profit. Max out salary cap without spending luxury tax. The NBA hands out TV revenue sharing to expensive teams, regardless if the roster/ratings are good/bad.

The Trae Young fall off is crazy to see. A couple years ago people were saying he was snubbed from All Star selection and now people say he doesn't deserve a good contract, and they're right.

It was clear that Trae wanted to go to the Wizards. That was a clear sign this was gonna be John Wall/Bradley Beal 3.0
Given the $40.7M trade exception, close to $80M in luxury tax space and the need for a true starting PG, Charlotte actually might've picked Trae up for $200m over 4 years or something. Lots of teams are looking for PGs right now, as is evident by the Minnesota move for LaMelo.
Not saying they didn't pay him too much, but there definitely would've been a market for him.
