Jamir Watkins inks two-way deal | Wizards still searching for backup center in free agency

The Wizards signed Jamir Watkins to a two-way contract and waived Leaky Black. But they still haven’t signed a backup center. Greg breaks down the remaining options and why the Wizards desperately need more help behind Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr. Enjoy!

  1. Hypothetical: if the wizards are a middling team at the deadline hovering around the play-in, what do we do with AD? Definitely donโ€™t want to extend him but trading him would feel like throwing the season away. Thoughts?

  2. ๐Ÿง™๐Ÿพโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿพ๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿพ๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿพ๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿพ I agree, we need front court help. Ive been banging the table for Drummond. He's played with AD. Shouldn't command too much money. Has developed better touch on his shot. Nice video.

  3. We dont need anymore bigs on standard contracts imo. Whatever happens with Okpara (and I wouldnt rule him out for a standard contract), he should float between the gleague and the Wiz for game action but almost exclusively practice with the Wiz to learn from AD and Sarr.

When it comes to roster spots, they are precious especially when you are talking about guaranteed contracts (look no further than DeAngelo Russell) and I dont think players are signing non-guaranteed contracts at this point (if they were then Im sure the FO would be happy to sign all the guys you mentioned)…

Also, i think we are getting a bit over our skis when it comes to what it means for this team to "try and win games" and setting realistic expectations. The reality is that if AD and or Sarr is not available, we will need to give Okpara and Vuk big minutes in addition to potentially signing someone off of the street if and when that happens… but signing Bagley now isnt going to move the needle on winning or being more competitive and will only take away NBA game minutes the front office is likely earmarking for the continued development of TV , Okpara and Reese… (which are only 20-25 min / night assuming AD and Sarr are available).

The roster now actually has good positional balance when you include Okpara and Reese:

    – 5 guards (includes the burned spot DeAngelo is taking up)
    – 6 SF's "wings" (on standard contracts which is why they likely asked Jamir to take the two-way for now – he was also the only guy on a non guaranteed contract)
    – 5 "bigs" (including Okpara and Reese – we can also include Gill as #6 since hes technically a Wizard but just not taking up a roster or two way spot – he can always come back on 10 day contracts as needed to fill in).

Bottom line is that we are still building this out and everyone is developing and they need time with the Wiz to do so… TV has improved leaps and bounds… his offense is ahead of his defense but that is the case with most young players.

Everyone is talking about the play in etc… we should be shooting for staying out of the relegation zone! Winning for us comes down to AD and TY playing and staying healthy, plain and simple… if they dont well be really bad again and no Marvin Bagley signing now will change that…๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
