Brad Stevens EXPLAINS Jaylen Brown Trade: Why OPTIONALITY Matters to Celtics
Brad Stevens explains why the Boston Celtics shook up the NBA landscape by trading Jaylen Brown, with Stevens emphasizing “optionality” in their bold approach to roster construction. Is this the end of superstar duos dominating a team’s cap sheet, or the blueprint for sustainable success under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement?
John Karalis of Celtics On SI breaks down the driving forces behind the trade, spotlighting the impact of salary cap constraints, the strategic value of draft assets, and what Paul George’s arrival signals for the team’s future. Karalis unpacks ownership’s stance, debates whether production should always match contract size, and explores what this means for Jayson Tatum long term. Can the Celtics maintain championship contention while navigating harsh new CBA realities—or does this move signal a new era where no star is untouchable?

I understand what you're saying. But then why would they go after giannis if he were making as much?
I think what this really boils down to is that Brad Stevens and the Celtics front office decided that Brown and Tatum are too expensive long term and basketball wise, they didn't want to move forward with another year of your turn/my turn Brown and Tatum iso scoring and decided that it was not going to work long term. With Tatum he has added playmaking to his arsenal over the years and he makes his teammates better. His on/off numbers are much more favorable. Meanwhile, JB's on/off numbers are not great even last year. They mentioned that these kinds of analytics played a small factor. I absolutely don't agree with that thinking at all but I think it definitely played a role as to why they made a decision like this.
Awful press conference for Brad. Most people accept the reality that you can't have two max players with this CBA but that doesn't explain why they traded Brown now and for so little in return. Their financial reality largely doesn't change until 28-29. They could have kept Jaylen this season and then next summer negotiate a friendlier extension or trade him then. The return a year from now couldn't be any worse than what they got.
C's went for it, won once, JB got paid (overpaid, IMO), and it wasn't gonna last forever — with the new CBA. The open market spoke and, for everyone personally offended by the trade, it's obvious that the C's weren't the only team who thought he wasn't worth the price. Philly's saddled with it now. We'll see how his ego fits in down there and much "respect" he gets from the Boo Birds. He did everything he could and he was very well compensated and given a good, competitive home for a decade — in an era where that doesn't happen. C's will be better this year than they were last year. And, if not, they'll adjust accordingly. ☘

Chisholm comes out and says it's not about money and then Brad comes out and basically says it's about the money
Don't forget Jalen was qualified for a massive extension, which could not really be afforded
Stop playing if you should trade someone it should have been tatum he just came off injury
C's got substantially worse in the short term in an East that got substantially better… all for a 1 year less on the contract and some very questionable maybe picks well into the future… that on the back of last years salary dumps, its all been about cost cutting and I doubt very much this team will be competing nor spending big to compete any time soon.
Tipping Mitch Robinson will be an injured bust, got his chip and his last decent contract already in hand, doubt he'll be killing himself for them, George will be an injured bust… terrible off season… if they end up with cap space post George, who wants to go there anyway after how they treated JB??
They better hope they can trade George for some serious help, he seems to be the trade asset that keeps on giving to those who trade him 😂😂
Why is it so hard for people to understand 70% of.your payroll locked into 2 guys is a bad idea….JB at 70M is an awful contract
If u r grading Brad by the Boston vision, he kill it. Grade is A. He satisfied his boss/ owner. He satisfied the fan base, beat writer,,,etc by get rid of players they never wanted from day they draft him one. And a bonus he send this cancer player to there enemy. JB is Philly problem now. So what u can't say Brad did a bad job. Now far as the way it was handle. Umm????
So let's see, how they handle JT next year. When it's time for extentions.
Greek was a Smoke screen. He just told u Greek would have been more expensive than JB.
The CBA was install to stop things like the Big 3. And also slow down salaries. It owners driven. !!!!
😲Ok so if TATUM DONT PROVE HIMSELF BETTER THAN BROWN leading the team to a TOP 2 or 1 seed plus advance in the playoffs he should be up for trade too after this upcoming season because he too ain’t worth all that Supermax money either right 🤨⁉️
Main takeaway I got from that presser
Brad's word salad is no better than Kyrie's
I think they could extend PG.
He just outplayed JB in the postseason by a large margin.
We are likely going to win the same or more games with PG and Tatum. Likely the same playoff outcome as well. JB has been a big reason we lost 3/4 years. His playoff strategy is awful. Dribble forever (poorly), not even look to pass and drive into 3 people just to get stopped and put up a fumbled shot attempt.
A 3yr 70m extension is not awful.
It saves them 25+m next year to use and if PG is still a great bench piece,6th man Brogdon type the following 2 years, 23m a year is a great value.
I think folks are purposely acting obtuse and it’s because we all love JB. But guys Brad and Bill said everything you needed to know without outright saying it. They don’t believe they can build a team around the two Jays with the 70% of the salary being tied to those two. Hence why he mentioned when we won in 2024 they were only 47% of the cap. “But Paul George” lol do you all realize the type of swing you can take with Paul’s expiring contract next year? Brad and Bill would never outright say “the team is not good enough with JB making that much money” but that’s the answer hence why the rest of the league bucked off. The talent is there but the price and how it handcuffs you is what they believe is not there.
I felt that Brad did a reasonable job explaining this – as much as I still don't like it. I appreciated that he apologized and said that if Jaylen felt it went left, and felt disrespected he is genuinely sorry. I believe him. The whole this is not financially motivated thing is kind of a ridiculous smoke screen – because the whole thing about "optionality" is financially based, it's about staying under aprons and all that – and that is financial – so while they may be willing to go over and pay more when they feel they have a contender, they are not doing that now. A big part of this decision was financial and they should admit that – it's ok to say we have to do it because of the penalties of the CBA etc, but it all comes down to the $ regardless.
Sorry dont believe all that bs! JB been involved in trading way b4 his new contract and even the year before the year of the championship. So please don’t come up with that crap!
John you’re just displaying in real time how they are reprogramming you and trying to force this being OK for everyone ! After this trade stunt and after NBA already prematurely aired that the Spurs would play NY in the finals even though they still had a decisive match against thunder that they had to still play there’s no point of even following the sport or any sport on the planet for that matter because everything is scripted! At this point, all of this sports stuff is just the same as WWF and unfortunately sport reporting now covers just scripted fantasy sports!
Listened to most of the Stevens / Chisholm presser, and got the distinct impression that the Celtics have no interst in year 2 of Paul George. If they can agree on an extension at a figure they like that includes George declining year 2, that could work. Otherwise I expect George to be traded within 12 months.
Ladies and Gentleman introtucing your defending 2026 champion New York Knicks vs.. the Woe Is Me Celtics
If Bill Chisholm was in the stand in court today, the only way those lies would be allowed on the stand is if Bev Canonne herself was the judge.
I wish the media dug into 1. Details of when the convo went left, some more. 2. Jb's access card being turned off which made him feel very disrespected. 3. The private equity side of things & how is completely reshaping the land scape of sports in general
John. You were the first one to ask a question 😅Good job! While listening to it live yesterday, I was having a hard time trying to figure out if this trade was based on money, CBA rules or something else. After listening to your pod, it seems more clear to me now.
As much as it pains me to see JB traded away, let’s give Brad a break. He stood up there and welcomed the criticism. Honestly after letting the dust settle a bit, I think he did the best he could to improve the team right now and into the future. There apparently was not much of a market for Jaylen, as odd as that sounds 😮
4:51 Tben why pay him the super max? That doesn't make any sense.
10:33 Get the next player so you can trade him for less too? You already have the guy so why trade him for the next guy you are not guaranteed to get?
Blazer fan here. I love the new CBA. We keep getting good players that we couldn't normally aquire. With the draft being a crap shoot we need another way to get good players. On the old CBA I don't think we can get Drue, Ja, or Deni.
