Atlanta Hawks Interested In Peyton Watson?

The Atlanta Hawks have emerged as a new suitor for Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson. According to Marc Stein, Atlanta has shown fresh interest in the versatile forward, but any deal would have to be completed as a sign-and-trade.

HoopsHype analyst Cyro Asseo breaks down why the Hawks are pursuing Watson, what a realistic trade package could look like, and why Denver’s asking price may be the biggest obstacle.

The Nuggets are reportedly seeking compensation similar to what the Utah Jazz received in the Walker Kessler sign-and-trade with the Lakers, a price that has already discouraged the Los Angeles Clippers from aggressively pursuing Watson. Atlanta, however, has the draft capital and matching salaries to potentially make a deal work.

Cyro explains the salary cap mechanics behind a sign-and-trade. Because of NBA trade rules, the Hawks would likely need to send out a contract such as Buddy Hield ($9.66 million) or Corey Kispert ($13.98 million), along with draft compensation, to land Watson. Depending on which player is included, Watson’s first-year salary in a new contract could range from approximately $19.3 million to nearly $28 million.

The video also examines Atlanta’s available draft assets, including its own 2029 and 2030 first-round picks, multiple second-round selections, and a 2031 second-round swap with Houston, giving the Hawks flexibility to construct a competitive offer.

Cyro breaks down where Watson would fit on Atlanta’s depth chart alongside Zaccharie Risacher, Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu, Dyson Daniels, CJ McCollum, Aaron Wiggins, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Devin Carter, and the rest of the Hawks’ young core. Watson’s elite defensive versatility and athleticism could make him another key building block as Atlanta continues its post-Trae Young rebuild.

Will the Hawks meet Denver’s asking price? Is Peyton Watson worth giving up valuable draft capital? And could Atlanta beat out the Clippers and other suitors?

  1. It’s not hard to understand why the Hawks would want him. He’s still very young and he’s only gotten better since entering the league. Denver would be wise to find a way to keep him.
