Yang Hansen gonna be teaching English during the offseason at this rate
For fans who don't speak Mandarin:
Reporter: When you first came on you were still breathing heavy and all that.During the recovery process over the past couple of days, aside from rest, what else did the team do to help you β checkups, rehab, that kind of thing? What was your own plan for these two days?
Yang: The team helped me get a lot of checkups done, first of all. And then they helped me take some recovery supplements. Aside from that, most of the time they just told me to rest in my room. And yeah, I definitely slept a lot β yesterday was almost… what, close to ten hours? Fifteen hours.
Reporter: What percentage would you say your body is at right now?
Yang: Good question. I'm the worst at giving scores, hahaha.
Reporter: Yang-ge… ("ge" means "older brother" in Chinese β a respectful, affectionate way to address someone. Teammates and reporters use it to show familiarity and respect.)
Yang: Don't call me ge. (A humble deflection β very normal in Chinese culture. Refusing the title is a way of being modest.)
Reporter: Today though β Yang-ge β after today's game you're Yang-ge. You weren't really in a rhythm in the first quarter. How did you get yourself into the game so quickly after that?
Yang: No, I β I think on the court, my teammates helped me, they helped me, and I tried to find ways to help the team. We played the game together. Whoever's opportunity it is, it's their opportunity β we just go out there together and win the game.
Reporter: It felt like once you got into a rhythm after the second quarter, you got a little excited β a few more turnovers, and the fouls today too. Did you realize that and try to control it?
Yang: I still wanted to draw a charge. I still wanted to draw an offensive foul. And then after that I thought maybe I should've gone for the block instead. But at the time I really wanted to try for the charge.
Reporter: Now that you've played two games in Summer League β aside from some physical hiccups β if you were to sum up the experience so far, what's it been like for you?
Yang: What surprised me the most is that I can actually understand what they're saying, and I can talk to them too. That's been the biggest surprise. Because basically the whole time last year Chris was here [translating], so for me that was the hardest part of Summer League. But after I got here β okay, interviews are still tough β but on the court and in everyday life, our communication has been pretty smooth and fun.
Reporter: Yeah, I saw you communicating a lot with your teammates on the sidelines today, and with the coaching staff too. It feels like the relationships are coming along well with the new guys β since it's not the same full Portland roster. How's that been?
Yang: I think we're really united on the court, first of all. Whenever a problem comes up we solve it together, we talk it through together. And yeah, sometimes my word order is a bit off, but they can understand β it's like when foreigners speak Chinese. They can figure out what I'm trying to say. So they've helped me a lot too. Sometimes when someone asks me a question, the guy next to me will rephrase it in a way I can understand better.
Reporter: Last time you mentioned you wanted to seriously study media English this new season. I wanted to ask β have you made any specific study plans for yourself?
Yang: You just asked me about this yesterday, and now you want a plan already? That's way too rushed, man. I'm β a little too rushed. Haha. I'll save that for next time. Alright, thanks. Don't… haha.
Do your thing big man…
Yang Han-Sen needs the Trail Blazers to put together a brutal training program for himβget his conditioning dialed in and tighten up his defensive footwork. Combine that with his post moves, elite playmaking vision, and high basketball IQ, and heβll be way better in the NBA.
