The Spurs’ $3.3 Million Signing Matters More Than It Looks

The San Antonio Spurs are bringing back Jordan McLaughlin on a one-year, $3.3 million contract, giving De’Aaron Fox familiar veteran insurance as Victor Wembanyama and San Antonio prepare for another NBA championship run.

In this San Antonio Spurs news breakdown, we explain why this quiet NBA free agency move matters more than the box score suggests. McLaughlin averaged only 2.0 points per game last season, but his ball-handling, familiarity with Mitch Johnson’s system and 42.5% three-point shooting could provide valuable emergency depth behind De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

We also examine how Fox’s recent injuries exposed San Antonio’s need for another dependable guard, why McLaughlin will not interfere with the development of Castle and Harper, and how this inexpensive contract preserves the Spurs’ final standard roster opening.

This is not a move designed to transform the starting lineup. It is a move designed to protect the rotation, preserve roster flexibility and help the Spurs survive the challenges of an 82-game NBA season. For a team trying to return to the NBA Finals and maximize Victor Wembanyama’s championship window, that insurance could matter more than most fans realize.

Watch until the end to discover the real reason this $3.3 million Spurs signing matters—and what San Antonio can still do with its remaining roster opening.
