Ebuka Okorie STRUGGLES in Detroit Pistons Summer League Finale—Should Expectations Be Tempered?

1. Personally I totally disagree with the term “Struggling” Yes, he has been inconsistent from the perimeter and finishing at the rim. What I look for is growth! Today he used his floater. He also blew by guys again, and again. He finished twice over a 7’2 shot blocker. He playing with a bunch of NBA whatabee’s. He is adjusting to having 6’8 guys mauling him. He will be fine! He’s 19 yrs old. He was 18 yrs old 3 months ago. We need to clam down.

Pistons fans who watched this episode in it's entirety, in your heads what is more likely at play here…..we have a bunch of NBA players who simply can't finish around the rim or is it the spacing on the team has been literally atrocious for years on end? Because i remember talking about spacing on the team, even before this rebuild even started…..

8. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that Okurie struggled. The expectations of being a 1st rd pick and being a contributor from day 1 should be tempered. He is playing a position that is notoriously difficult to adjust to at the NBA level. Patience will be key in his development

9. Ebuka will be a very good player down the line but he needs time. He is nowhere near ready for meaningful NBA minutes. Hopefully the front office wasn't counting on him contributing this season, because we still desperately need another ballhander/playmaker

10. Okorie looks like another project. In a few years he might join Holland as really good NBA players…. Or not.

    Chaz has never looked like more than a 3 point specialist. Not drafting Maxine Renault was a terrible choice by Langdon. While 2nd round picks rarely become nBA players, Maxine played a position of great need,, and has a coveted NBA skillset. Chaz was neither of those things, even if he beomces an NBA player someday.
    Pick 52 looks like the typical late 2nd who helps the G league team.

11. I think you're reading too much into his summer league play.. I believe he is playing it a bit more safer before the season actually starts. Sumner league is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

13. It's disturbing to me that Langdon put together a summer league team this bad.This is the lowest IQ dumbest players.I've seen what's wrong with langdon. You should be trying to play smart basketball at any level

14. I feel like Ebuka hasn't gotten a single screen in 4 games lmao. What are these dudes on the roster thinking about themselves. No one is going to give them a 2 way contract for their tunnel visioned hero ball playstyle, I thought everyone understood by now that it doesn't work

15. chaz did have a nice drive on a close out and he hit an elbow pull up jumper that I was impressed with.

16. Trajan gone get his ass fired doing stupid shit like this. We drafted an undersized guard again who isn’t elite in any one particular area on offense or defense all people know is he can dribble that’s it.

    If I’m drafting a 6’1 guard he better have a calling card, an elite trait about him that warrants drafting him to a team that’s trying to contend for a championship. Say what you want but Ebuka looking like a flat out miss right now. I’d rather have had Cam Carr, Koa Peat, Labaron Philon Jr, there’s so many other names we could’ve gotten before choosing a 6’1 guard again. In the NBA you need SIZE. I don’t care that Ebuka can dribble really well, that shit does nothing for the pistons as a whole.

    Plain and simple I am not confident right now. And I’d argue drafting Ebuka pushes us further from a championship rather than toward a championship.

20. Ebuka can obviously get to the paint, but he has no touch, and IMO, that is one of those things that people have or they don't by the time they get to the NBA. You can get marginally better, but you don't really see bad finishers become good ones. You see bad finishers become less bad finishers. Ebuka was a bad finisher in college and that translated to summer league. Against NBA length around the rim, it's just not going to cut it.  

    Not that I think Okorie is cooked from the jump, but it's tough when guys with plug-and-play skillsets like Philon and Carr were right there. They also seem like guys who just fit way better with Cade. Philon has way more potential as a spot-up guy playing off of Cade, while still having the handle/creation. Carr is an obvious fit as more of a 3&D wing. Those guys are year-1 contributors on this team, but I doubt Okorie is after watching him in summer league. Doubt he gets minutes over Jenkins, which is discouraging.

21. ehhh, I thought he availed himself well, considering he was running point feeding scrubs and getting wacked mob/Cade style while refs looked the other way

22. Nothing against Okorie but it’s funny how the fanbase overreacted to the first game saying we found a gem and now after a few bad games it’s we need to be patient lol

Not finishing…little Ish Smith who was a blur in the open court and whose great handles let him get into the paint at will with his dribble….and then not be able to get off a shot or even a pass…..but Okorie can hit 3s and jumpers.. And Okorie has bumpshooter Collins slammer Duren, tricksy Cade and soaring Ausar to pass to instead of these 4 summer league slugs who do nothing but clog the lanes.

24. The one thing he definitely going to automatically get is stronger.

Given where this team is at, coming off a 60 win season and Cade entering his prime years, the Piston’s shouldn’t be relying on Okorie at all, to contribute as a rookie this season… yet they are, because Trajan left him as one of only three true ball handlers on the roster, which really puts a lot of pressure on Okorie…

    As far as Chaz…in SL he shot very well, but didn’t show anything else… feels like a great time to extract max value from him in a trade, since this team has enough shooters that can’t create their own shot.

29. Last night Darryn Peterson went 4-16, Christian Andersen went 1-8, and Philon went 1-13 from 3. Your observation is again from a NBA2k perspective. Back in the day, basketball evaluation wasn’t only about raw data, it took into account the level of instinct, developmental progression, and potential. A lot of what I saw was Ebuka checking the boxes in each core component.

33. It's becoming clear that Trajan is not a good GM and he has been bad at drafting. He put some complementary players around the draft picks Troy Weaver made, but what else good has he really done?

34. That’s so funny all I saw was how great he was after he played his first game. I kinda just laughed like it’s one game. I would very much love it if he’s Jalen Brunson 2.0 but let’s be real.

35. It's the summer league kiddos . Kevin Knox looked like Barkley Luka Garza looked like Hakeem 😂 the greats Steph , Lebron, D. Rose, J. Brunson all struggled summer league Steph greatest shooter ever shot 30percent summer league let that kid grow and work

37. Ku, dude didn't struggle. He was solid but he referred too much to the older players and yet still put up 16pts and 6ast. And william and anderson were looking to gun. He got handles and can get into the paint and can shoot the 3. Very Good Pick for the piston as he is a bonafide PG that can score but has a pass first mentality. Once he learns the game at the NBA Level he is going to be Dynamic, reminds me of Chris Paul without the assertiveness and command of the team not yet but it will come!

42. He has a lot of development to come but to me he's a 2-3 year project anyway. He seems pretty aware of what's going on around him for such a young guy.

43. this pistons summer league looked like a bunch of guys who showed up for open gym who had never met before. awful chemistry. they weren't a team. that hurt his effectiveness, in my opinion. i think he will look more comfortable when he is in a system and gets familiar with his teammates.

44. He is going to struggle in NBA, when he face all the guards and get use to the speed and contact he will be all right.
